Jobs within the
Animal Industry
2. Introduction
• Within the animal industry, there are many
different sectors, each with their own jobs.
• In today’s session, we are going to be looking
at some of those jobs and the responsibilities
that fall under them.
• By the end of this session, you should have a
much greater understanding of the different
jobs available to you and what those jobs
involve.
3. Lesson Aims:
• By the end of this session, you will be able to:
– Name at least three different sectors within the
animal industry.
– Identify at least five jobs within each of those
sectors.
– Explain the roles and responsibilities of those five
jobs.
– Explain the skills and qualifications required to
gain those jobs.
4. Quick Revision Task
• Thinking back to last lesson, how many different
sectors within the animal industry can you think of?
• Production (livestock, crops),
• Leisure/tourism,
• Equestrian,
• Fishery management,
• Aquaculture,
• Farriery,
• Game keeping,
• Animal care/welfare,
• Conservation
5. Jobs Within the Animal Industry
• Within the animal industry, people don’t just
work with the animals.
• Within a company every job is vital to the running
of the organisation.
• Take the college as an example…
– The teacher’s teach you the subject content…
– The learning coach teaches you the skills you need to
pass the course…
• But have you thought about what else goes on
behind the scenes at the college?
6. NHC
• At NHC, there are hundreds of people, all contributing
to the running of the organisation:
– Managers
– Human Resources
– Catering
– Administrators
– Cleaners
– Maintenance
– Marketing and many more
• Some might think that teachers have the most
important job role within a college but without each of
these other people doing their job, the teachers
wouldn’t be able to do theirs!
7. The Animal Industry
• So, within the animal industry, there are the
key jobs that everyone thinks of such as
veterinary nurse, zoo keeper, RSPCA inspector.
• But there are many more jobs with roles vital
to the running of the organisation.
• Some of these, such as the gift shop or café
are known as auxiliary services.
– Technically the organisation could function
without these auxiliary services but they would
not be very popular if they tried!
8. Task
• This week’s task involves everyone in the
group doing some research and adding some
information to a document.
• The document can be found at the link on 3D
Learning in the lesson details (where you
found this presentation).
• We are using a GoogleDoc Word file.
• Follow the instructions on 3D Learning.
9. Summary
• The task that you are doing today will be very
useful for all of you when it comes to working
on your assignment.
• Make sure you do your bit and add to the
GoogleDoc file.
• Please add your initials or name to the bit that
you have added.
• As a class you will build a large document with
lots of information that you can all share.
