2. A common challenge found in plants and
landscaping: A diverse skill set.
• Many people do not know that it takes many different skills and mind
sets to be involved in the plants and landscaping field. From the very
beginning they need workers that are willing to have an open mind and
willing to learn new skills for their job. Everyday people are learning
more and more about this field. If they are not willing to learn these
new skills they will be very limited on what they can do. Everyday in this
society we are learning that their are new ways to do things. For
example, there is always a new technology being made. We need people
willing to learn how to use these new technical things, we need people
willing to do hard work, we need people willing to understand what is
going on. This field calls for many different skills and we need to make
sure every skill set is within the industry.
3. Challenge that I am trying to solve
• I did some web surfing on what people inside of this industry thinks is a
challenge. A lot of people named diverse skill sets. So this entire final
project will be focusing on the challenge and solutions when starting out
in the plants and landscaping industry.. so meaning right away.
• People are coming in and out of the industry because of not having the
proper skills. This not only is bad for business but this is bad for the
team they work with. They have to have a diverse skill set but they also
need to be able to maintain them. For example, there are new plant
species people need to continue to learn, especially new technology in
todays society, new generation of homeowners meaning new styles, new
designs and of course much more.
4. A diverse skill set.
• What does it mean to have a diverse skill set? Well there are
many important qualities when it comes to skills in this field
including:
• Communication- Knowing how to talk with others correctly
• Time management- Being able to understand time and patience.
• Customer and personal service
• Knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and mathematics
• Cooperation- keeping a good attitude throughout the processes.
• Innovation- You need to be able to be creative
• Judgement and Decision making- Considering all aspects
• Plus many more things.. There are too many to list!
5. How to gain these skills
• There are many ways this industry can gain a diverse skill set.
They learn them through school, family, work, ect.
• One thing I will mainly focus on is gaining these skills through a
two year school program. There are many great programs out
there who are willing to help someone with the passion for plants
and landscaping gain more knowledge. For example, I will list a
few recruiting school videos for this particular field!

6. Solutions
• 1. When hiring people for a position in plants and landscaping industry, we need to
look for people willing to learn new skills. If we pick the right people right away we
will save money by not having to fire people and interview new. We also need to
look for people with the qualities from the previous slide.
• 2. We need to find people willing to work in a team with others. (Audio note to
lighten the mood.. Sorry lost my train of thought!!)
• 3. They need to be open to new opportunities, workshops, learning from peers,
learning new technology and much more to keep their brains working and learning.
• 4. A huge solutions is hiring people of all ages and backgrounds. You never know the
customer and for this reason you need to be ready to tackle any plants and
landscaping task.
• -If we can not find someone with all of the skills at least find people with skills that
the industry has gaps in. Everything will run more smoothly if we have at least a
couple people who know how to certain things and they can eventually teach
others. This may be difficult but to run a great industry we need to have the best.
7. How to “tackle” the solutions
• Solution 1- We need to look at the unique individuals ready to learn.
Some may look away from them because of their uniqueness but they
could be a great candidate for the job. To make sure we are hiring the
right people we can give “tests” to test their knowledge.
• Solution 2- Teams are a huge part of most industries. They have to be
willing to prove they work great as an individual and a team. We can do
this by possibly doing group interviews with tasks and watch for the best
ones.
• Solution 3- The industry needs to offer workshops or speakers to provide
new and old information to keep everyone thinking. They could also
provide scholarships for people in school or people with potential
wanting to go to school to be better.
• Solution 4- Like I have mentioned we need to keep the industry up to
date with new and old styles so we need to keep an open mind to ALL
people and their ideas.
8. In Conclusion
• To me this is a great challenge to try and find solutions too
because without the dynamic of diverse skill sets you will not be
able to get whatever everyone else's projects are about. It all
starts with the industry and the workers.
