This document introduces the concept of academic discourse. It discusses how individuals have different sociolects they use in different social contexts like with family versus friends or at work. Academic discourse is meant to establish truth through facts, evidence and objective language rather than opinions. It gives authority to knowledge and education. When academic discourse is not respected, it can undermine the profession and knowledge itself by allowing other influences from politics or business. As students and teachers, understanding academic discourse is important as they are members of the academic community responsible for knowledge.
