The structure of MIC is simpler compared to several single-input converters for each source. This reduces the system size and cost by reducing the number of components and improves overall dynamic response.
Moreover, the inverter is based on multi-level capacitor clamped topology. The modulation technique is Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) whose frequency is variable so it can synchronize with the grid using Phase-Locked Loop (PLL). There have been quite a number of “black box” power quality solutions offered which claim to deliver savings by improving power factor and harmonics through some type of engineered capacitor set up. We do not do any of this. The Harmonizer-AVR is a patented technology that simply allows the customer to consistently and safely reduce the voltage to the customer facility to the optimal minimum level. That’s it. We do not actively effect power factor or harmonics.
There is an optimal minimum voltage range below 120 volts where lights, motors, etc, will operate comfortably with no effect on their practical performance. At 110-114 volts these loads will work with less waste heat, longer life, a lower carbon foot print and less energy. However, there are two factors preventing the power company from delivering the minimum optimal voltage to commercial and industrial facilities: Line Loss: Since there are “leaks” or line loss along any length of cable run, the power company must deliver more voltage than is required to the buildings closest to the substation so that facilities furthest away will receive at least the minimum voltage. As a result, the power company must deliver an unneeded “buffer” of power to the facilities closest to the substation...and the customer pay for it. Peak Power : Since the power company must always deliver enough electricity to allow for “peak demand” at non-peak times, the voltage being delivered to the customer facility can rise well beyond what is efficiently required. Again, the power company must deliver an unneeded “buffer” of power to the facilities to allow for peak usage times...and the customer pay for it. If a facility measured their incoming voltage and found that it was quite high, they could install a transformer that would step down the incoming voltage by a certain percentage. This “hard tap” transformer solution has been available for decades. However, if the grid power fluctuated down, the percentage reduction is “fixed” and the voltage can drop too low, causing a brown out. Legend Power Systems Corp. provides a simple and effective technology solution that allows qualified commercial and industrial facilities to reduce their voltage to the optimal minimum level, without any worry about going too low when the power grid fluctuates.
The Harmonizer-AVR has two parts: An extremely high quality and energy efficient (99. 5%), transformer with three voltage reduction taps – 6%, 4%, and 2%. An electronics payload called an automatic voltage regulator. The AVR is pre-set with the optimal minimum voltage for the customer facility which was determined by out audit. The AVR senses the fluctuations in the power from the grid and dynamically selects one of the three voltage reduction settings. If grid voltage goes too low, the AVR defaults to by-pass and takes itself right out of the circuit allowing all available energy to flow directly into the building - There is no way that the Harmonizer-AVR can negatively impact the customer building’s power supply. The combination of these two components results in a simple and elegant patented solution that, for the first time, allows facilities to safely always operate at their most efficient voltage level without the need for the ongoing expensive energy buffer.

Optimizing voltage and conditioning incoming power results in increased efficiency and reduced operating temperatures for lights and motors. The Following table summarizes surface temperatures for lights and motors. The selection included AC induction prime movers, lighting, VDU’s, and chiller drives. The green figures show the effects of the Harmonizer, reducing the operating temperature. These transfer to effective energy savings. It is recognized that 10 degree C reduction in operating temperature will double the life expectancy of electronics.
Again, the Harmonizer-AVR is a simple and verifiable system that reduces voltage to the optimal minimum level and keeps it there. Savings results are projected once and verified twice after the installation with all reports coming to the customer for review. We start with a non-intrusive audit that may take one half to two days. The $2,000 - $3,000 cost of this audit is currently waived. The audit consists of: In advance of the audit we will need the following items for each facility: 2 years of billing data. This is usual sent over by the accounting group or by request from the client’s utility. The purpose is to allow our engineers to analyze the facility usage trends and peak power. Single line drawings for the facility. This is often with their electrical contractor, or their maintenance manager. If these are not in digital or PDF format already, they can be scanned or just simple photographed with a digital camera. Worst case, as long as they have them available upon our arrival we can work with that. These drawings let our electrician know where we can safely hook up the power analyzer and where the Harmonizer-AVR will be installed. Any documentation or insurance requirements that they may have The audit process is a non-intrusive, 4-8 hour process that consists of: Hooking up the Hioki power analyzer. This will gather seven days of data. We will return in a week to remove it and upload the data to our lab. Introducing the Voltage Optimization Analyzer to the main lighting circuits. The VOA is basically a mini harmonizer. With this test we can determine the exact savings that the full install will have on lighting Non-lighting load inventory. Our auditor will walk the facility and take an inventory of the other loads on the system. This data is measured and compiled based on a scientific procedure developed and documented by Dr. William Dunford of the University of British Columbia. A copy of the procedure is available to the customer at any time. Within three weeks of the audit, a detailed report is delivered to the customer including the projected savings, available incentive funding, the projected payback and ongoing savings for the life of the system.
Once the installation is completed, we will conduct the Measurement and Verification procedure in conjunction with the incentive funding body’s and/or utility’s auditors.
