This document outlines support provided to countries in developing National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) under the UNFCCC. It discusses support from the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG), Adaptation Committee, and Nairobi Work Programme. The LEG provides technical guidelines, tools, workshops and facilitates knowledge sharing to help LDCs develop NAPs. The Adaptation Committee also assists with NAP development and implementation for non-LDCs. The Nairobi Work Programme supports adaptation efforts including those related to NAPs.

The guidelines provide the basis for the formulation and
implementation of NAPs

7. NAP workshops
 The workshops use a bottom-up approach of working through the NAP-
SDG iFrame, using country inputs to select relevant SDGs and related
development goals, which them inform adaptation strategies, options and
actions
 Countries work through the process to arrive at a pilot NAP, which can
then be used to identify gaps and needs that would inform the proposal to
the GCF for the steps needed to produce a high-quality and country-
specific NAP.
 All this work is iterative, ongoing and would be designed to gradually build
up the capacity for all necessary adaptation activities over time, including
production of updated/revised plans in future, steps to implement and
monitor the adaptation activities, etc – this is the NAP process
 Open NAPs – real cases for real countries, provide the concrete
materials and examples for the delivery of the training

9. NAP Expo
 The NAP Expo is an annual outreach event organized by the LEG, in
collaboration with various bodies and organizations, to promote exchange
of experiences and foster partnerships between a wide range of actors
and stakeholders on how to advance NAPs
 It brings together everyone working on or interested in NAPs -
governments, independent organizations, private sector, academia,
independent experts
 Four events have been held in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 – next event is
planned to take place in April 2018

10. The Open NAPs
 Developed in an open collaboration with interested partner organizations
and experts to offer direct support to countries on their work on NAPs
 The LEG has launched these for initial set of countries, and is open to
requests from other countries
 Enable the experts to work together with a country, and for the country
teams to take advantage of the wide expertize and resources, to advance
work on NAPs

 Provides information on progress made in the process to formulate

 Information is extracted from the online questionnaire and surveys
conducted with countries during LEG events

12. Collaboration and the provision of inputs to organizations and processes that
provide support to the LDCs
 Working with other bodies and programmes under the Convention (as
mandated by the COP)
 Working with the GCF in to support countries to access funding from the
GCF for the formulation of NAPs and the implementation of policies,
projects and programmes contained in the NAPs
 Engagement of the GEF and its agencies in supporting the LDCs

17. AC Task Force on NAPs
Aim: support developing countries seeking to formulate and implement NAPs
Objectives:
 Serve as the panel within the AC that continuously looks at issues related
to NAPs
 Liaise with the LEG, upon request, in support of its work with regard to
NAPs in LDCs, ensuring consistence and supplementarity of mandates
 Identify opportunities in which activities can also be employed by non-
LDCs
 Follow up on the operationalization modalities identified for the support of
non-LDCs’ NAPs
 Report to the AC at each of its meeting on issues identified and proposed
activities to support the NAP process for all eligible developing countries.

19. NWP overview and activities related to NAPs
 Established in 2005, as a mechanism under the Convention to
facilitate and catalyze the development and dissemination of
information and knowledge to inform and support adaptation policies
and practices
 Links relevant institutions, processes, resources and expertise
outside the Convention to respond to adaptation knowledge needs
identified by Parties, and arising from the implementation of the
various workstreams under the Convention
 NWP partner organized are mobilized to provide support on various
aspects related to NAPs, such as:
 Paper on considerations regarding vulnerable communities,
groups and ecosystems,
 NAP Expos, NAP case studies and training on NAPs.
