Progress Energy Carolinas installed nine LED street lights to replace high pressure sodium lights on a block of East Davie Street in Raleigh, North Carolina. Measurements found the LED lights provided a 51% reduction in footcandles on the street and 8% reduction on sidewalks, while reducing wattage by 42%. Observations showed improved visibility and uniformity with the LED lights. Progress Energy concluded the LED lights were a viable alternative, though further testing is needed on controls and long term performance.
