Simplicity is a lost art in the application development space. The Wikipedia definition of Simplicity is “Simplicity is the property, condition, or quality of being simple or un-combined. It often denotes beauty, purity or clarity. Simple things are usually easier to explain and understand than complicated ones. Simplicity can mean freedom from hardship, effort or confusion.” This is a beautiful statement that we often lose sight of when we are building our applications. Instead we are on a never ending quest to fill out a checklist of features or to build something clever forgetting about the actual needs of our users to get a specific task done. This session takes complexity to task and challenges you to bring simplicity to the center of your development with some straightforward ideas and guidance.

This is the final presentation from a workshop on health-care organized the University of Applied Science of Kuopio Finland during the Experience Service Design conference 2009.
I gave a talk on the role of Design Thinking to leaders in the financial industry. The focus was on user centric thinking to innovate financial products and digital services. (all case material is removed)
Communities are at the core of the human experience and our design practice, yet we don’t always put the same level of active effort in designing our communities as we do in designing the products and services we make. We live and work embedded in networks of other people and systems. Communities are defined by shared norms and culture, and have a massive impact on how we live, think and act. Why leave this up to chance? We are all stewards of the many communities we engage in every day, and we need to take an active role in mindfully crafting these communities. So, how do we craft better communities? What does better even mean? This talk is a reflection on my experiences building and crafting communities at a variety of scales from the personal to the global. I will discuss my successes and failures, my fears and delights, as well as lessons learned along the way. We are nothing without the communities we inhabit, so let’s make them great together.

Chance and fate in making the connections that ignite the creative spark. At one time or other we all will call on inspiration, support and/or ‘reality checks’ from others with a different perspective, or perhaps wish we had done in hindsight! Some thoughts on how this can happen and how we might help develop an environment to increase the chances of it happening.
These are the slides from a lecture given to design students at Shenkar school in Tel Aviv, Israel on May 2020. The presentation is a "Gonzo" style journey into my world of work, the world of Futures thinking, design, research and development. The journey takes us to the current era we live in from different perspectives, the rising acknowledgment in Design as a plethora of various disciplines, into futures thinking, world-building, design fiction, futures design, science fiction prototyping, speculative design, critical design, strategic foresight, human-centred thinking, future of living, work, play, protopian futures, re-wilding zeitgeist, and the new imperatives.
