Computer Hardware and Software: A Quick Tour of Technology
Information technology refers to the collection of tools that make it easier
to use, create, manage and exchange information. The Internet is the latest of a
long series of information technologies, which includes printing, mail, radio,
television and the telephone. Hardware is a comprehensive term for all of the
physical parts of a computer, as distinguished from the data it contains or
operates on, and the software provides instructions for the hardware to
accomplish tasks. It consists of programs and applications that run on
computers.
We’ve already seen how large the computers were and these days we are
using very small computers If we look at the computers from this perspective, we
can group them into three categories – Mainframe, Mini and
Microcomputers.Mainframe are very huge computers. It is very powerful
computers with large memory and processing capabilities. It can support
hundreds of users simultaneously. Mini computers are medium sized computers,
much larger than the personal computers we are using and smaller compared to
the mainframe computers. These computers can support multiple users
simultaneously and is less powerful than mainframe computers. Microcomputers
are often called personal computers (PCs) because they are intended to be used
by a single person at a time. While mainframe and mini computers can support
multiple users simultaneously, it can support only one user at a time. Micro
computers can further be classified into desktop laptops.

3. The role of productivity is to assist the people in becoming more
productive, effective and efficient. A vertical market is a particular industry or
group of enterprises in which similar products or services are developed and
marketed using similar methods. Horizontal Software, is application software that
is useful in a wide range of industries.
Operating system roles may be defined to provide users access to
computer resources, such as files, computer setup and configuration tasks,
application programs and specific features within applications, separately from
the permissions associated with the user's login. Permission levels may be
designated directly to roles, providing a level of abstraction beyond user login
access permissions. Role members may gain access to a resource through the
permissions of a role, and similarly, other authorized users will not be denied
access to a resource based on a change to the role.
The Computer hardware interprets and executes the program (software)
instructions and coordinates how all the other hardware devices work together.
Primary Storage, are The computer’s main memory, which consists of the
random access memory (RAM), cache memory, and the read-only memory
(ROM) that is directly accessible to the central . processing unit (CPU)Input
Devices, output Devices, CPU and RAM. The Secondary Storage Equipment
designed to store large volumes of data for longterm storage (e.g., diskette, hard
drive, memory card, CD. Equipment used to capture information and commands
(e.g., keyboard, scanner). Output devices Equipment used to see, hear, or
otherwise accept the results of information processing requests (e.g., monitor,
printer). Communication devices Equipment used to send information and
receive it from one location to another (e.g., modem).
