Artistic language is based on different elements
Now we are going to work with three of them:
points / dots, lines and planes or surfaces: Some
interesting elements of Design
• Dots
• Lines
• Planes
DOTS
The smallest and most simple element in art expression. Its main purpose is to
indicate position. It may have different qualities, such as color, shape and size.

DOTS
They are used to capture audience attention, or to create volumen. Dots in
combination can even imply direction and movement, bringing us to lines.
Pointillism Aboriginal art
DOTS Some examples in art, for instance,
YAKOI KUSAMA’s work
You can see more examples in her web:

LINES
A line is a series of points adjacent to each other. Where a point has no dimension,
a line has one dimension.
Lines are about movement and direction, gesture and value, as you can see in this
GIACOMETTI’s drawing.
LINES You can find lines even in street art creations…
You can see more examples in his blog: http://buffdiss.com/
LINES Let’s see PATRiCK SEYMOUR’S amazing works…

LINE An inspiring design using lines as an expressive element
made by FRANK CHIMERO
You can see more examples in his blog: http://frankchimero.com/blog/
PLANES
A plane or surface can be thought of as a series of adjacent lines. We’re simply
adding another dimension. Surfaces and planes are abstract objects. –It’s
something relative to the form, another topic we’ll work later.-
PLANES
Planes used by JACOPO ROSATI, a brilliant illustrator.
You can see more examples in his web: http://www.jacoporosati.com/
PLANES Planes are really usual in graphic design

All together now…
We must admit that the artists tend to mix these elements,
as you can see in these examples
