Texture: What’s that?
Now we are going to learn some things about textures :
Texture is defined as
the tactile quality of the surface of an object-
-how it feels if touched.
Texture is the element of art that refers to the way
things feel, or look as if you could feel if touched
(the illusion of touch).
Textures
But it is so much more than that. Let’s see!!
Types of textures
TACTILE TEXTURE
is the tactile quality of a surface, such as rough, smooth, soft…
A real texture is one you can actually feel with your hand, such as a
piece of sandpaper, a wet glass, or when you touch an animal fur. It
also can be created by an artist by doing a collage.
-TEXTURA TÁCTIL-
Types of textures
VISUAL TEXTURE
is a visual quality of a surface. It is the result from painting or drawing as
the real texture.
Visual texture is an illusion of texture created by an artist. Paint can be
manipulated to give the impression of texture, while the paper surface
remains smooth and flat.
-TEXTURA VISUAL-
Textures
We can also divide texture in another pair of categories:
NATURAL TEXTURE
It's the texture we find and it is not made by humans. For example:
stones, sand, rice, etc.
ARTIFICIAL TEXTURE
It's the texture from things made by humans. For example: a pencil, a
chair, a raincoat, etc.
How to use the textures?
To imitate the nature of the
materials with artistic
purposes.
To create a different
impression in the
observer
Some techniques to obtain textures (I)
WITH WAX CRAYONS
You can draw with them in different ways
1-To blur the lines making them softer (DIFUMINAR).
2- To scratch in order to create a graphic or an
image.(ESGRAFIAR).
3- To intensify the colour on the paper, pressing over
it. (APRETAR)
4-To drag the wax crayons on the paper (ARRASTRAR)

Some techniques to obtain textures (II)
WITH FROTTAGE
Technique of obtaining an impression of the surface
texture of a material, such as wood, by placing a piece of
paper over it and rubbing it with a soft pencil or crayon.
Some techniques to obtain textures (III)
WITH COLLAGE
It is a technique of an art production, where the artwork is
made from an assemblage of different forms, in order to
create a new work.
It may include magazine and newspaper clippings,
ribbons, bits of colored papers, texts, … photographs and
other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.

Some basic ideas about texture

  • 2. Texture: What’s that? Now we are going to learn some things about textures : Texture is defined as the tactile quality of the surface of an object- -how it feels if touched. Texture is the element of art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if you could feel if touched (the illusion of touch).
  • 3. Textures But it is so much more than that. Let’s see!!
  • 4. Types of textures TACTILE TEXTURE is the tactile quality of a surface, such as rough, smooth, soft… A real texture is one you can actually feel with your hand, such as a piece of sandpaper, a wet glass, or when you touch an animal fur. It also can be created by an artist by doing a collage. -TEXTURA TÁCTIL-
  • 5. Types of textures VISUAL TEXTURE is a visual quality of a surface. It is the result from painting or drawing as the real texture. Visual texture is an illusion of texture created by an artist. Paint can be manipulated to give the impression of texture, while the paper surface remains smooth and flat. -TEXTURA VISUAL-
  • 6. Textures We can also divide texture in another pair of categories: NATURAL TEXTURE It's the texture we find and it is not made by humans. For example: stones, sand, rice, etc. ARTIFICIAL TEXTURE It's the texture from things made by humans. For example: a pencil, a chair, a raincoat, etc.
  • 7. How to use the textures? To imitate the nature of the materials with artistic purposes. To create a different impression in the observer
  • 8. Some techniques to obtain textures (I) WITH WAX CRAYONS You can draw with them in different ways 1-To blur the lines making them softer (DIFUMINAR). 2- To scratch in order to create a graphic or an image.(ESGRAFIAR). 3- To intensify the colour on the paper, pressing over it. (APRETAR) 4-To drag the wax crayons on the paper (ARRASTRAR)
  • 11. Some techniques to obtain textures (II) WITH FROTTAGE Technique of obtaining an impression of the surface texture of a material, such as wood, by placing a piece of paper over it and rubbing it with a soft pencil or crayon.
  • 12. Some techniques to obtain textures (III) WITH COLLAGE It is a technique of an art production, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, in order to create a new work. It may include magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored papers, texts, … photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.
