Most leaders are forced to walk a thin line: innovate abundantly, but keep us in the black. Inspire your people to do good work, but hold them accountable for their performance. Foster a culture that attracts talent, but don’t give an inch when it comes to productivity.
Even those who lead with the best of intentions often struggle to strike a balance between what’s good for the business and what’s good for their people. This dichotomy makes it difficult to be both an effective leader and a compassionate leader.
It’s not that power makes people want to be less empathetic; it’s that taking on greater responsibilities and pressure can rewire our brains and, through no fault of our own, force us to stop caring about other people as much as we used to. But it does not have to be this way.
But leaders who put in the work to prioritize the well-being of their teams and lead with compassion will be rewarded where it matters: with better job satisfaction, better relationships with their teammates, and better business outcomes.

6. Toyota Production System
(TPS) = Hard innovation
HR + Culture = Soft Innovation
7. Toyota moves slowly, yet it takes big leaps.
Toyota grows steadily, yet it is a paranoid
company.
Toyotas operations are efficient, but it uses
employees time in seemingly wasteful
ways.
8. Toyota is frugal, but it splurges on key areas.
Toyota insists internal communications be
simple, yet it builds complex social
networks.
Toyota has a strict hierarchy, but it gives
employees freedom to push back.
(Impossible Goals)
to build a car that makes the air cleaner,
prevents accidents, makes people healthier and
happier when they drive it, and gets you from
coast to coast on one tank of gas
(Local Customization)
when it introduced the subcompact Yaris in 1999,
Toyota had to offer advanced technology, greater
safety, roomier interiors, and better fuel efficiency
to live up to European customers expectations.
(Experimentation)

(Founder Values)
Kaizen (CQI), respect for people and their
capabilities, teamwork, humility, putting the
customer first, and the importance of seeing
things firsthand.
(Up and In HR Management)
When Toyota evaluates managers, it usually
emphasizes process performance and learning
over results.
(Open Communication)
Give people the freedom to voice contrary
opinions.
Make tacit knowledge explicit.
22. Create Culture
1. Contradictions as a way of life
2. Solve contradictions (PDCA, 8 steps TPS,
A3 report, 5 whys)
3. Encourage employees to voice contradicts
opinion (new ideas)
