- In case you all are not familiar, the City of Alexandria is in Northern Virginia, just 6 miles south of Washington, DC. Alexandria is on the ancestral lands of the PIscataway and Doeg people It’s a small city of about 15.75 mi2 and a population of over 165,000. Alexandria is well known for our historic old town, you can see an image of King St and the King Street trolley there. We are happy to be partnering with Forth on the Leadership of Employers for Electrification Program (LEEP) – we’re one of several municipalities included in the project to promote Charge@Work and EVAL programs to the workplaces in our community and region. Alexandria is a great place to consider workplace charging because of its thriving business community. Alexandria was named the #1 business climate of small metro areas by business facilities magazine last year.
- Alexandria has been taking steps for years to build a sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem for the community. EVRS was adopted in 2021 as a list of recommendations and roadmap for how we can promote EV adoption and address EV charging needs for our City fleets, our residents, workforce, and visitors. Alexandria has set goals for EV adoption in the community in our Energy and Climate Change Action Plan, 50% of new vehicles sales are EV by 2030 100% of new vehicle sales are EV by 2050 Workplace charging is a critical component of the strategy to meet these goals in the community. While most charging currently happens at home, about 50% of Alexandrians live in multi-family dwellings and may not have access to a charger in a garage or driveway. We also have a lot of residents in our historic districts that rely on street parking. Having a workplace charger big benefit
- From the analysis conducted in the EVRS, we know that we’ll need 1,500 workplace chargers by 2050 Alexandria has over 7,500 businesses, including some larger headquarters Five Guys Patent and Trade Office National Science Foundation Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus WMATA Regional HQ United Way Because this is a critical component to our charging strategy to support the adoption of EVs, we are motivated to support workplaces as they evaluate and set up workplace charging programs. It likely will be just as important in other municipalities, We’re lucky to be partnering with Forth on this project, but for all workplaces, your local government is a great resource for workplaces There are a lot of barriers to these types of projects, so your local government may be able to provide technical assistance, or connect you with helpful resources, make sure you’re aware of incentives, and regulations Currently in Alexandria’s standard conditions for new construction, 2% of parking spaces are required to have EV charging, and 75% of spaces are required to be EV ready. You municipality may have similar requirements or recommendations, so important to understand those and how to incorporate the requirements into a workplace charging program.
- An important strategy for Alexandria to connect with our business community will be to work with our local partners and business associations. The Alexandria Economic Develoment Partnership is an important partner for us, and
- The City itself is a large employer as well, so I am also currently evaluation the opportunity to establish a workplace charging program for our staff There are about 2,500 employees in the City, and the City offers existing transit and commuting benefits. While we do have a strong transit network, we have a lot of staff that drive to work every day, so a workplace charging program will definitely help the City meet our GHG reduction goals This may be the same in your City, but a lot of times our staff park in the same areas where our fleet vehicles are; so if those fleet vehicles are out in the City from 9-5, that could leave those chargers unoccupied and available for use by City employees without needing dedicated infrastructure for employees vs. fleet Same considerations for sharing infrastructure with the public. Evaluating options to allow public charging outside of work hours.
