I. Leadership – The Definition
 Leadership is the process of influencing others to
achieve the organizational goals.
 Leadership is an interaction between the leader, the
followers, and the situation.

1. Several Definitions of Leadership
 Leadership is about unlocking potentials, whether
individual potential or that of a group, company, or
organisation.
 It is not about telling people what to do, but inspiring
them to see what they are capable of, then, helping
them get there.

Leadership quality
 Good leaders know themselves
An effective leader is not afraid to take on responsibilities. Sometimes it requires putting the
organisation or group first- and keeping it there.
 Good leaders are committed
Inspiring people with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism, and service so that
they can become happy and resourceful citizen.
 Good leaders know they don`t know everything
Gather information and trust others` point of view before developing a plan of action.
 Good leaders are open to change
Everything is in motion , continually changing, forever adapting.
 Good leaders go the extra mile

II. Leadership Styles
 Leadership Style: the patterns of how a leader interacts
with his/her followers.
“Leadership style impacts the motivations of
employees, either positive or negative.”
 The 6 leadership styles:
1. Coercive
2. Authoritative
3. Affiliative
4. Democratic
5. Pacesetting
6. Coaching
Values Values are traits or qualities that represent individual`s or
organisation`s highest priorities, deeply held beliefs, and
core, fundamental driving forces.
 Values defines what individual/organisation believes and how
you want your organisation resonating with and appealing to
employee and the external world.
 Values are guiding principles because the form a solid core of
who you are, what you believe.
Choose your leadership values
Ambition, competency, individuality, integrity, responsibility, accu
racy, loyalty, excellence, teamwork, diversity, quality, courage, eff
iciency, quality, learning, honesty, flexibility, discipline, accoun
tability etc.
Entrepreneurial skills
 Building a society that is responsive to, encouraging
and favourable to Youth Entrepreneurship is the
responsibility of every society as well as the
Government. Encouraging the Youth to become
entrepreneurs has a lot of advantages in terms of
solving problems of unemployment in the economy as
well as paving way for the innovation and growth of
the country
Youth entrepreneurship- an overview
Olusegun Obasanjo, was quoted as saying in Lokoja, Kogi State that “Nigeria has
watered down her moral standards to the point where many of the youth are
confused, discouraged, in deep trouble and streets are full of violence as a result of
youth unemployment”. The unemployment rate in Nigeria was last reported at 23.9
per cent in 2011. tribune 9th, 2012
World youth unemployement rate (ILO)
Youth population is estimated to be 1.5 billion
employable 620 million
prediction at ILO appr. By 2015 youth seeking for employment appr. To be 660 million
in asia alone youth employment is higher measuring up to 50-60%
international Labor Organisation, 2012
IMPLICATIONS
the above figures stand to reaveal the fact that Global youth unemployment could boomerange
to become a glober crises causing social and economical impact on all countries beside pushing
the economies and progress backward.
Building entrepreneurial skill through education
 Sustained educational and awareness building programs
combined with training in business skills helps develop a
culture that promote enterprise.
 Introducing youth entrepreneurship awareness building
program at school college levels can ignite young minds to
understand and wake up to unlimited and dreamt of
possibilities that they have in becoming self employed.
 Nurturing youth entrepreneurship can be highly beneficial
for the society, economy as well as for the progress of the
nations besides the individual`s self development and
achievement.

 Leadership is the process, not the position.
 Use the combination of transactional and transformational

 Keep the bright-side of yours and improve the dark ones
 Enhance your skills in perceiving, managing, using, & understanding
emotions.
 Leadership and learner ship is indispensable.
 Keep followers close to the heart & improve them through effective delegation.
 Establish effective groups and teams to help you achieve the overall goals.
 Understand the pros and cons conflicts, and apply the appropriate techniques
to resolve them.

Leadership – The Definition  Leadership is the process of influencing others to achieve the organizational goals.  Leadership is an interaction between the leader, the followers, and the situation. 3 Boss says “Go!”, leader says “Let’s go!” Leader knows the way, shows the way, & goes the way. LEADERSHIP V I S I O N A C H I E V E COMMUNICATE CREDIBILITY“To lead the people, walk behind them.” —Lao Tzu
  • 4. “Leaders come in many forms, with many styles and diverse qualities. There are quiet leaders and leaders one can hear in the next county. Some find their strength in eloquence, some in judgment, some in courage. . . . The fact that there are many kinds of leaders has implications for leadership education. . . . We should give young people a sense of the many kinds of leaders and styles of leadership, and encourage them to move toward those models that are right for them.” —John W. Gardner

Several Definitions of Leadership  Leadership is about unlocking potentials, whether individual potential or that of a group, company, or organisation.  It is not about telling people what to do, but inspiring them to see what they are capable of, then, helping them get there. “I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.” —Indira Gandhi

Manager Leader Manager - Innovate - Administer - Develop - Maintain - Inspire - Control - Have long-term view - Have short-term view - Ask what and why - Ask how and when - Originate - Imitate - Challenge statues quo - Accept the status quo - Do the right things - Do things right
  • 7. Leadership quality  Good leaders know themselves An effective leader is not afraid to take on responsibilities. Sometimes it requires putting the organisation or group first- and keeping it there.  Good leaders are committed Inspiring people with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism, and service so that they can become happy and resourceful citizen.  Good leaders know they don`t know everything Gather information and trust others` point of view before developing a plan of action.  Good leaders are open to change Everything is in motion , continually changing, forever adapting.  Good leaders go the extra mile “setting the scene with small leadership acts gives you the credence and respect when big things happen”

Leadership Styles  Leadership Style: the patterns of how a leader interacts with his/her followers. “Leadership style impacts the motivations of employees, either positive or negative.”  The 6 leadership styles: 1. Coercive 2. Authoritative 3. Affiliative 4. Democratic 5. Pacesetting 6. Coaching

Values Values are traits or qualities that represent individual`s or organisation`s highest priorities, deeply held beliefs, and core, fundamental driving forces.  Values defines what individual/organisation believes and how you want your organisation resonating with and appealing to employee and the external world.  Values are guiding principles because the form a solid core of who you are, what you believe. Choose your leadership values Ambition, competency, individuality, integrity, responsibility, accu racy, loyalty, excellence, teamwork, diversity, quality, courage, eff iciency, quality, learning, honesty, flexibility, discipline, accoun tability etc.
  • 10. Entrepreneurial skills  Building a society that is responsive to, encouraging and favourable to Youth Entrepreneurship is the responsibility of every society as well as the Government. Encouraging the Youth to become entrepreneurs has a lot of advantages in terms of solving problems of unemployment in the economy as well as paving way for the innovation and growth of the country
  • 11. Youth entrepreneurship- an overview Olusegun Obasanjo, was quoted as saying in Lokoja, Kogi State that “Nigeria has watered down her moral standards to the point where many of the youth are confused, discouraged, in deep trouble and streets are full of violence as a result of youth unemployment”. The unemployment rate in Nigeria was last reported at 23.9 per cent in 2011. tribune 9th, 2012 World youth unemployement rate (ILO) Youth population is estimated to be 1.5 billion employable 620 million prediction at ILO appr. By 2015 youth seeking for employment appr. To be 660 million in asia alone youth employment is higher measuring up to 50-60% international Labor Organisation, 2012 IMPLICATIONS the above figures stand to reaveal the fact that Global youth unemployment could boomerange to become a glober crises causing social and economical impact on all countries beside pushing the economies and progress backward.
  • 12. Building entrepreneurial skill through education  Sustained educational and awareness building programs combined with training in business skills helps develop a culture that promote enterprise.  Introducing youth entrepreneurship awareness building program at school college levels can ignite young minds to understand and wake up to unlimited and dreamt of possibilities that they have in becoming self employed.  Nurturing youth entrepreneurship can be highly beneficial for the society, economy as well as for the progress of the nations besides the individual`s self development and achievement. “A country`s competitiveness start not on the factory floor or in the engineering lab. Conclusion  Leadership is the process, not the position.  Use the combination of transactional and transformational  Combine the power and influence into process of work.  Keep the bright-side of yours and improve the dark ones  Enhance your skills in perceiving, managing, using, & understanding emotions.  Leadership and learner ship is indispensable.  Keep followers close to the heart & improve them through effective delegation.  Establish effective groups and teams to help you achieve the overall goals.  Understand the pros and cons conflicts, and apply the appropriate techniques to resolve them. “Leadership is based on inspiration, not domination; on cooperation, not intimidation” 15
