The researchers studied how cells communicate and the role of misfolded proteins in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. They found that while some patients exposed to misfolded proteins through growth hormone treatment did not develop higher risks of these diseases, the proteins can transmit between cells. Separate researchers discovered the HIV protein NEF helps the virus multiply by evading the immune system. Tracking NEF's activity linked it to an enzyme that aids viral replication. A compound was found that blocks NEF's dimerization, reducing its role in viral replication. This discovery of NEF's function has great potential for developing treatments to stop HIV's spread.

Explore the cell's role in mediating adverse reactions
Food allergy has been long recognized and well documented. Other adverse reactions to foods first referred to as “toxic idiopathies” by John Freeman, co inventor of immunotherapy, at the early part of the 1900s can be mediated by and have their impact on the nervous and endocrine systems. It can also be mediated by pharmacologic mechanisms and can also affect any part of the body. There’s a great clinical need to accurately identify triggers of adverse reactivity as they have now been linked with even the most serious of modern maladies and diseases. In fact, inflammation is the hallmark of metabolic syndrome. Given the multitude of pathogenic mechanisms underlying adverse reactions to foods and other environmental exposures it is necessary that a utilizable and cost effective technology be understood so that its application be utilized under the appropriate circumstances.

Proteomic Analysis of the Serum and Excretory-Secretary proteins of Trichinel...
The nematodes of the genus Trichinella are known to cause the pressing foodborne parasitic disease Trichinellosis and these parasites are known to complete all stages of development in one host with the enteral and parenteral phases observed during infection. Proteomics, in general, pertains to the systematic identification and quantification of the totality of proteins, which is the proteome of a biological system, at a specific point in time. The available proteomic studies have paved the way to identify and characterize Trichinella stage-specific proteins reacting with infected host-specific antibodies. Yet, very few contributions provide any information about changes in the global proteomic serum profile of Trichinella-infested individuals. Studies demonstrate that various Trichinella species and their phases of the invasion produce a characteristic proteomic pattern in the serum of experimentally infected pigs. Recent investigations have found that T. spiralis infection induced strong regulatory T cell responses through parasite excretory-secretory (ES) products, characterized by an increase of some regulatory T cells and growth factors. T. spiralis has also been reported to induce the angiogenic molecule vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) during nurse cell formation towards the induction of angiogenesis for nutrient supply and waste disposal. Herein, the various analogs considered in these studies include the serum, excretory-secretory proteins, surface proteins, immune-reactive proteins from muscle larvae (ML) and so on. Intestinal cultures, striated muscle tissues, pigs, mice, beavers, contributions from patients are some of the major models exploited for this purpose. The current analysis focuses on recapitulating the recent findings driven on this area to create a common ground for further studies and to ease any difficulty in continuing the proteomic analysis of T. spiralis using in vitro and in vivo models.

Thematic analysis in qualitative research is a time-consuming and systematic task, typically done using teams. Team members must ground their activities on common understandings of the major concepts underlying the thematic analysis, and define criteria for its development. However, conceptual misunderstandings, equivocations, and lack of adherence to criteria are challenges to the quality and speed of this process. Given the distributed and uncertain nature of this process, we wondered if the tasks in thematic analysis could be supported by readily available artificial intelligence chatbots. Our early efforts point to potential benefits: not just saving time in the coding process but better adherence to criteria and grounding, by increasing triangulation between humans and artificial intelligence. This tutorial will provide a description and demonstration of the process we followed, as two academic researchers, to develop a custom ChatGPT to assist with qualitative coding in the thematic data analysis process of immersive learning accounts in a survey of the academic literature: QUAL-E Immersive Learning Thematic Analysis Helper. In the hands-on time, participants will try out QUAL-E and develop their ideas for their own qualitative coding ChatGPT. Participants that have the paid ChatGPT Plus subscription can create a draft of their assistants. The organizers will provide course materials and slide deck that participants will be able to utilize to continue development of their custom GPT. The paid subscription to ChatGPT Plus is not required to participate in this workshop, just for trying out personal GPTs during it.

With increasing population, people need to rely on packaged food stuffs. Packaging of food materials requires the preservation of food. There are various methods for the treatment of food to preserve them and irradiation treatment of food is one of them. It is the most common and the most harmless method for the food preservation as it does not alter the necessary micronutrients of food materials. Although irradiated food doesn’t cause any harm to the human health but still the quality assessment of food is required to provide consumers with necessary information about the food. ESR spectroscopy is the most sophisticated way to investigate the quality of the food and the free radicals induced during the processing of the food. ESR spin trapping technique is useful for the detection of highly unstable radicals in the food. The antioxidant capability of liquid food and beverages in mainly performed by spin trapping technique.

Garvan Institute of Medical Research Leaders in Science A/Professor Cecile King Immunology Division, The Garvan Institute of Medical Research “The immunobiology of Interleukin-21 in immunity and autoimmunity” Monday 21st October, 2013 12PM, NAB AUDITORIUM Host: A/Professor Robert Brink Cecile King's research focus over the past 15 years has been in the field of autoimmune disease and T cell immunobiology. CK completed her PhD in Immunology at the Telethon Institute for Child Health/University of Western Australia in 1999. At completion of the PhD, CK was appointed as a Research Associate at the Department of Immunology, Scripps Research Institute in the Laboratory of Nora Sarvetnick. CK returned to Australia in 2005 and has since established her own independent research group at the Garvan Institute. Cecile King's lab is interested mucosal autoimmunity. In type 1 diabetes (T1D), the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed by self-tissue- destructive T cells. These cells express markers that help us to determine, for example, their dependence upon growth factors and where they have been in the body. We are particularly interested in the relationship between the cells that cause autoimmune diseases that develop at the mucosal interface between our bodies and the environment. Broad-based suppression is commonly used to treat autoimmune diseases and transplant recipients but it has an obvious drawback since we need a functioning immune system in order to thrive. The overall goal of our work is to analyse pathways that can be modulated to improve immunity in individuals during vaccination, and limit the immune responses that cause damage to both endogenous tissues and transplanted tissues in autoimmune diseases.
