INTRODUCTION OF LAXATIVES
ïLaxatives are drugs that relieve constipation by losing stools or inducing a bowel
movement.
ï Some laxatives are also used before bowel procedures or examination.
ï Laxatives come as pills, capsules, liquids, foods, gums, and suppositories.
ï Drugs are

1. ALOE
Synonym: Aloe,Alo-vera, Guar-
patha, Kumari, Ghrita-kumari
Biological Source: It consist of
dried juice of leaves of âAloe
barbadensis Miller (à€à€Čà„
à€Źà€Ÿà€°à€Źà€Ÿà€Ąà„à€šà„à€žà€żà€ž à€źà€żà€Čà€°) and Aloe
Africanaâ.
Family: Liliaceae.

Colour: Greencolour
Odour: Odourless
Taste: Bitter taste
Size: It is available in various sizes.
Solubility: It is entirely soluble in 60% alcohol
and it partially soluble in water.

Chemical constituents:
1. Anthraceneglycosides (11 to 40%).
2. Barbaloin or Aloin,
3. Isobarbaloin,
4. aloe-emodin and aloesone.
5. Aloinosides A and B

2. CASTOR OIL
Synonyms:Ricinus oil, Oleum ricini.
Biological source: Castor oil is a fixed
oil obtained by cold expression of the
seeds of âRicinus Communisâ(à€°à€żà€à€żà€šà€ž
à€à€źà„à€Żà„à€šà€żà€ž).
Family: Euphorbiaceae

MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS:
Colour: Paleyellow or colourless liquid.
Odour: Slight bitter
Taste: Tasteless.
CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS:
1. Castor oil contains triglyceride of Ricinoleic acid
80%.
2. Iso-ricinolei
3. linoleic , stearic and isostearic acid.
4. It contains heptaldehyde, sebacic acid

USES:
1. Castor oilis used as cathartic.
2. It is used as laxative,
3. lubricant in paints
4. It is used grease, polish, printing ink,
5. It is used aromatic castor oil, or in the form of
capsules,
6. It is used in cosmetic product like- creams, jellies,
lipsticks, perfumed hair oil, soap etc.
7. also used as hair tonic.
