A Report On A Cox Model Essay
A Cox model is a well recognized statistical technique for exploring the relationship
between the survival of a patient and several explanatory variables. A Cox model
provides an estimate of the treatment effect on survival after adjustment for other
explanatory variables. It allows us to estimate the hazard (or risk) of death, or
other event of interest, for individuals, given their prognostic variables.
Interpreting a Cox model involves examining the coefficients for each explanatory
variable. A positive regression coefficient for an explanatory variable means that
the hazard for patient having a high positive value on that particular variable is
high. Conversely, a negative regression coefficient implies a better prognosis for
patients with higher values of that variable. Cox s method does not assume any
particular distribution for the survival times, but it rather assumes that the effects
of the different variables on survival are constant over time and are additive in a
particular scale [17]. The hazard function is the probability that an individual will
experience an event (for example, death) within a small time interval, given that the
individual has survived up to the beginning of the interval. In this model the unique
effect of a per unit increase in a variable or covariate is assumed to be
multiplicative with respect to the hazard rate [18]. For example, taking a drug may
halve one s hazard rate for a stroke occurring, or, changing the material from which a

When news of Magellan s planned voyage reaches King Manuel, he becomes
alarmed. Fearing the possibility of a successful Spanish voyage and the loss of
Portuguese naval secrets, he sends the Portuguese ambassador Alvaro de Costa to
find Magellan. Although de Costa says the king will reconsider the request for an
expedition, this promise has a dark undertone. If Magellan and Faleiro refuse to
come back to Portugal, de Costa warns that they will lose all their honor, that their
family and friends will suffer, and that they will risk upsetting the delicate truce
between Portugal and Spain. Magellan knows that that if he accepts the offer, he will
most likely be convicted of treason and then executed, so he tactfully declines. ...

Seville is one of the greatest contemporary cities: both a commercial center, as
showcased by its thriving trade, and a religious center, home to the third largest
church in the world. As a Portuguese captain sailing for Spain, Magellan is not well
received by the people of Seville. His coat of arms is mistaken for that of the
Portuguese king, and an angry mob attacks Magellan and his crew. Although
Magellan escapes harm, this shows that Magellan is powerless against the people,
foreshadowing a future mutiny. However, Magellan cannot dwell on the incident,
as his work is far from done. He needs to purchase supplies for the journey,
including food, sailing gear, weapons, etc. The food for only the first leg of the
journey costs nearly as much as the entire fleet, so this job requires great attention
to detail. He is also faced with the task of assembling a crew, which proves to be
more difficult than usual due to his Portuguese heritage. He tries to enlist as many
Spaniards as possible, but most Spaniards do not want to sail under a Portuguese
captain. Therefore, he is forced to include many foreigners in his crew. This leads to
scrutiny amid accusations of Magellan packing his crew with Portuguese, but after
some concessions from both sides the Armada is ready to

Special Education 332 (Education and Inclusion of Individuals with Special Needs)
has been enlightening for me as a secondary mathematics educator. In the beginning
of the semester, my feelings towards special education were those of apathy and
insensitivity. I now understand that my feelings were due to my lack of knowledge
and my judgment based on stereotypes.
I always knew that making fun of students with learning disabilities was wrong.
However, I never felt that inclusion of special education students in general education
classes was plausible or made sense. I felt that special education students belonged in

I will not be able to teach my general education class with special education students

Other sports such as rugby and tennis use different types of video assistance in
their respective sports to help out the officials. There is only so much a human eye
can see and when an official is tired or has an obstructed view, decisions can be
made incorrectly. This is when video referees can come in and help. The could
allow for a replay to show them what the best decision to be made is. So many
forms of VA can be used, perhaps the captains of each team get a limited amount of
challenges to the referee s decision, or the referee can choose when to look at the
video. Set rules like all penalties or red cards have to be reviewed by the assistant is
another idea being thrown around. The English Football Association are finally
beginning experiments with video referees in this season FA cup. Referees will have a

Exploring A Beam Bridge
A beam or girder bridge is the simplest kind of bridge. In the past they may have
taken the form of a log across a stream but today they are more familiar to us large
box steel girder bridges. There are lots of different types of beam bridges .A Beam
Bridge needs to be stiff. It needs to resist twisting and bending under load. In its most
basic form, a beambridgeconsists of a horizontal beam that is supported at each end
by piers. The weight of the beam pushes straight down on the piers. Under load, the
beam s top surface is pushed down or compressed while the bottom edge is stretched
or placed under tension. If we imagine that there is an imaginary line running down
the center of the beam this line remains at its original length while... Show more

A concrete beam is prestressed by pulling on steel rods running through the beam
and then anchoring the ends of the rods to the ends of the beam. This exerts a
compressive force on the concrete, offsetting tensile forces that are exerted on the
beam when a load is placed on it. (A weight pressing down on a horizontal beam
tends to bend the beam downward in the middle, creating compressive forces along
the top of the beam and tensile forces along the bottom of the beam.) Prestressing
can be applied to a concrete beam that is precast at a factory, brought to the
construction site, and lifted into place by a crane; or it can be applied to cast in
place concrete that is poured in the beam s final location. Tension can be applied to
the steel wires or rods before the concrete is poured (pretensioning), or the concrete
can be poured around tubes containing un tensioned steel to which tension is applied
after the concrete has hardened
Describe The Importance Of The Colosseum
The Colosseum
Koch, Matt
Do you know what one of the most important structures to mankind history is? The
Colosseum. The importance of the Colosseum, otherwise known originally as the
Flavian Amphitheatre, was that many of the materials, styles, and architecture were
inspiring to many architects and designers constructing today s modern facilities and
structures.
The emperor of Rome at the time, Vespasian, began building the Colosseum (Flavian
Amphitheatre) in 72 AD. They believed that in ancient Rome the patron was more
noble and loyal than the architects, and the architects were just craftsmen and hired
hands (Woog, 2014). So as of today the designers and architects are unknown to the
world, and will probably never be found out about because if limited evidence.
Floor plans, 3 dimensional scale models, perspective drawings, and full size design
sketches are what were used by the anonymous architects and designers of the
Colosseum (Hopkins, 2011). The site of construction was formerly known as the
Golden House, owned and lived in by Nero the Emperor. This was drained and as a
precaution against potential earthquake damage concrete foundations six metres deep
were put down to support it (Cartwright, 2012). And eight long years of hard work
and design later the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) was completed in 80 CE.
There were many materials mixed in the project of constructing the Colosseum
(Flavian Amphitheatre). The walls of the Colosseum were built with stone. They
made use of a number of arches in order to keep the weight down, but yet still keep
them strong (Cartwright, 2012). The floor of the Colosseum was wooden and usually
covered in sand most of the time. But the floor was taken out due to heavy
weathering in 1674 AD. And about 19 miles outside of Rome in a little town of Tivoli
were quarries where the Romans mined there stone blocks out of to construct the
walls of the Colosseum. Some other material they had used to construct the
colosseum include, limestone brick, concrete and volcanic stone (otherwise known as
tufa ), pumice stone. And including bronze, which was used for statues around the
stadium. But some parts of the colosseum that are made of concrete are not authentic

Born in the 5th century BCE, Plato was a rationalist,...
Born in the 5th century BCE, Plato was a rationalist, idealist philosopher, believing
that we are born with concepts within us, and that these concepts are the same for
everyone (Solomon, Higgins, Martin, 2012). Through his beliefs, Plato developed a
theory which he believed answered the question of What is reality? , that he called
the theory of Forms(Solomon, et al., 2012). According to Plato, the Forms are a
perfect ideal of an object or a concept, which is unchanging and innate within us
(Solomon, et al., 2012). It is because of the Forms, according to Plato, that we have
the ability to know what something is even though we may not have seen that exact
thing before (Solomon, et al., 2012).
According to Plato, an appearance is what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Allegory of the Cave is a dialogue between Socrates and Glaucon in Plato s The
Republic (Solomon, et al., 2012). The Allegory of the Cave tells the story of
people who are chained facing a wall in a cave, where they cannot turn around.
There is a fire on a ledge behind them and people on the ledge. A person walks
behind the chained people, along the ledge holding a figure of a horse on a stick
above his head so that the fire can reflect the image of the horse as a shadow on the
cave wall for the chained people to see. The chained people are to guess what the
figure is. One person is freed from the chain of people and made to leave the cave,
where they see the forms of what was reflected on the wall. This individual comes
back to the cave to tell the people that are chained the difference and what they
have not seen, however they do not believe him and for this reason wish that if they
could, they would kill him (Solomon, et al., 2012). This allegory provides an
example of appearance and reality. According to Plato s theory of the Forms, the
shadow on the wall of the cave is the appearance of the horse. It is there, it can be
seen however it cannot exist without the actual figure of the horse, the reality.
Because the shadow cannot exist without the actual figure, this analogy shows the
distinction and relationship between reality and appearance according to Plato s
theory. However,
Pros And Cons Of In Vitro Fertilisation ( IVF )
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a process of fertilisation where an egg is combined
with sperm outside the body, in vitro( in glass ). The process involves monitoring
and stimulating a woman s ovulatory process, removing and ovum or ova (egg or
eggs) from the woman s ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a liquid in a
laboratory. The fertilised egg (zygote) undergoes embryo culture for 2 6 days, and is
the transferred to the same or another woman s uterus, with the intention of
establishing a successful pregnancy.
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) refers to the genetic profiling of embryos
prior to implantation, and sometimes even of oocytes prior to fertilization.
PGD is considered in a similar fashion to prenatal diagnosis. When used to screen
for a specific genetic disease, it s main advantage is that it avoids selective
pregnancy termination as the method makes it highly likely that the baby will be free
of the disease under consideration. PGD thus aids assisted reproductive technology,
and requires in vitro fertilization (IVF) to obtain embryos or oocytes for evaluation.
While PGD has many benefits, especially for potential parents who may be at risk of
passing on genetic defects, opposition to the use if this technology has come in many
forms.
Opposition ranges from the view which believes an embryo has full moral status
from the moment of conception to the other end of the scale where people believe
that the use of this technology will lead

The difference between the two methods is the initiation or act of death; euthanasia,
the doctor initiates death, whereas in physician assisted suicide, the patient willingly
takes the medication, therefore, committing suicide with the help of the doctor s
prescription (Marker 1). Because euthanasia and physician assisted suicide are
relatively similar in purpose and function, they will be used in correlation to each
other when discussing the use and concerns.
With states having the option to choose legalization, the few that have the law in
place limit its use to terminally ill patients (Ardelt 5). Terminal illness is defined as
a disease that cannot be cured or adequately treated and is expected to result in death
of the patient within a short time (Benjamin 4). Most recent is Vermont, which
legalized assisted suicide in May 2013, making legalization relevant to today s
society and issues with the possibility of more states legalizing these methods
(Benjamin 3). With millions of patients being diagnosed with terminal illnesses, such
as cancer, heart disease, and fatal accidents, both those patients and their families are
exposed to the compelling aspects of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide
(Swarte 2). Euthanasia and physician assisted suicide should not be legalized in the

Inventions in the 1920s
Essential Question: What are some of the inventions in the 1920s and how did they
affect society then and now? The 1920 s was a huge era for great inventions and
technology. This period of time is referred to as the Roaring twenties, a decade of
excitement, success and determination. This era acquired its name from the boom of
thousands of ideas that were not only thought of, but brought to life. These new

had been around for decades, but it was not until the 1920 s that scientists
perfected the advanced technology. Many inventors came into play when it came
to the various systems used to create the first T.V., but no one is to be named the
inventor. Scientists spent decades trying to find a breakthrough, and it was not
until the 21th century that it was found. Charles Francis Jenkin s system helped
lead to the first construction of the T.V. He had demonstrated a scanning system
with a revolving disk, he called it radio vision. Jenkins system worked but the
images were blurry. Another inventor named Herbert E. Ives invented his own
system called the 185 line system. Philo Taylor Farnsworth was another key
inventor. In 1927, he developed the image dissector. This was the first ever working
electronic camera tube. Philo was motivated by his system and continued trying. His
hard work led him to invent the first fully electronic T.V. system. A radio
corporation named the RCA, was very intrigued by his work and sent their own
engineer to Philo s lab. This engineer perfected Philo s iconoscope; a camera tube (

was changed forever. Soon after, there was a rapid growth in technology. The T.V.

Compare Jitter, Shimmer and Harmonics to Noise Ratio in...
Compare jitter, shimmer and harmonics to noise ratio in terms of the types of
information each provides?
Jitter and shimmer are measures of the cycle to cycle variations of fundamental
frequency and amplitude, respectively, which have been largely used for the
description of pathological voice quality. Jitter is also known as frequency
perturbation and refers to the minute involuntary variations in the timing variability
between cycles of vibration. In essence, it is a measure of frequency variability in
comparison to the client s fundamental frequency. Research shows that jitter values in
normal voices range from 0.2 to 1 percent. (Ferrand, 2007) Jitter values above this
level indicate that the vocal folds are vibrating in a way that ... Show more content on

The vocal note produced by the vibrations of the vocal folds is complex and made
up of periodic (regular and repetitive) and aperiodic (irregular and non repetitive)
sound waves. The aperiodic waves are random noise introduced into the vocal
signal owing to irregular or asymmetric adduction (closing) of the vocal folds.
Noise impairs the clarity of the vocal note and too much noise is perceived as
hoarseness. The Harmonics to Noise (HNR) ratio is a measure of the proportion
of harmonic sound to noise in the voice measured in decibels. (Ferrand, 2007).
HNR quantifies the relative amount of additive noise (Awen Frankel, 1994) The
lower the HNR, the more noise in the voice. Laryngeal pathology may lead to poor
adduction of the vocal folds and, therefore, increase the amount of random noise in
the vocal note. If a person has some kind of problem in vibrating the vocal folds,
due to a growth, paralysis of one or both vocal folds, or other kind of laryngeal
problem, a larger amount of air escapes during vibration, creating turbulent noise.
(Pabon Plomp, 1988) The greater the proportion of noise, the greater the perceived
hoarseness, breathiness or roughness and the lower the HNR figure will be, i.e. a
low HNR indicates a high level of hoarseness, and a high HNR indicates a low level
of hoarseness. There is a strong relationship between how we perceive voice quality
and the harmonic to noise ratio (Ferrand, 2007).
Analysis Of The Sampler By Ira V. Morris

Asparagus is very high in nutritional value and thus should be part of one s daily
diet chart. When you take a small cup of asparagus it can fulfill about 70% of ones
daily intake of vitamin K. Further the nutrients within it lower the risk of heart
disease and diabetes.
It helps in digestion as it has high fiber content and it controls the levels of blood
sugar. It flushes out toxins and neutralizes all the harmful effects of free radicals and
thus the cells in the body remain healthy.
Due to high fiber content it keeps your tummy full and helps you in achieving your

The Hajj is one of the 5 pillars of Islam and ultimately reflects many core Muslim

one another especially during times like Ramadan, where certain actions are
haram. Furthermore, the following of Muhammad s steps as an integral part of the
Hajj acts as a guide for adherents to base their future lives upon. The Hajj traces
around the Saudi Arabia region, highlighting key components of the Prophet s life.
This life is one that evidently reflects all core Islamic values and teachings, and

key values reflected in Muhammad s life, while Umma, given through the unity of the
Religious Beliefs And The Role Of Dress In The Religious...
Religious ideologies regarding dress are based on religious organizations
individual dogmas, who believe that your outwardly appearance should reflect your
inner beliefs. Similarly, adhering to a strict code of dress, that symbolizes its group
s traditions and customs, also helps in controlling the body s sexuality. Hunt Hurst
and Miller Spillman (2012) stated that being well dressed (modestly) is a religious
duty and not a personal preference (p. 266). Dress in a matter of speaking is an
outwardly symbol of religious identification and showing ones connectedness to their
religious organization. Arthur (n.d.) believes a group identity is projected through
dress because people use self presentation and self promotion to visually present
identity that is congruent with their belief systems (Religionand Dress, para. 1).
Since each religious organization perceives the role of dress, as it pertains to the
expression of identity, differently one must also understand the basis of said
religious organizations beliefs in order to comprehend how their beliefs mirror the
role of dress. Islamis a monotheistic faith, one that believes in a single God,
emphasizes submission to God or Allah, as well as the group over the individual.
The Qur an, the literal word of God, lays out the role of dress and its meaning for
both men and women (Hunt Hurst Miller Spillman, 2012; Islam, 2017). According to
the Qur an men are to lower their gaze and be modest, which is purer for them,
Technology Standards For The Outsourcing Of The
Software
Technology Standards
The first technology standard relating to the outsourcing of the software writing
would be the Base Operating System. The two teams must decide on a base OS to
be used. This will allow for easier sharing, troubleshooting, and future support of the
product. This need for this standard is because most programing software packages
offer solutions for Windows, Linux, Unix, MAC. The issue arises if one team is
using one OS platform and the other is using another, even if they are using the same
application to write the code there may be differences which could cause problems in
future bug fixes.
The idea of a standard platform goes beyond the writing suite and extends into all
expects of the work. This primary standard will be a basis for all other applications
chosen by the company from email to collaboration.
The Second concern would be the level of encryption for the SSL VPN. The level
indicated by the India group is very poor and considered unsecure by most measures.
The ability to break the encryption is much easier with the lower bit encryption used.
Both teams need to agree on a minimum encryption to use that would be both secure
enough to ensure that data is not compermised but yet not so intrusive to the data that
causes lag in transmission. The outsourcing company in India would should have a
good understanding of the legal specifications of encryption for data moving between
the 2 companies. Generally there is a max encryption put in
Theme Of Greed In The Maltese Falcon
Greed has the been the main source of conflict in the Maltese Falcon. In the novel,
the characters desperately chased after an infamous artifact known as the black
bird. With thorough research, it had been discovered that this thousand year old
artifact was worth millions of dollars. Yet, due to the existence of this bird,
numerous people have been greatly affected. Various individuals have been
intrigued by the bird and eventually become consumed by its value. But, the
character who has truly been consumed by greed due to the blackbird is Gutman.
Gutman s greed for the bird has led to the death and deception of many. Miles
Archer, a detective and partner of Sam Spade, died because of this. All Miles did was
carry out his duty as a detective and went through with a case that would
eventually lead to his death. Miles archer is the victim of Gutman s greed. Mr.
Gutman is the killer of the innocent Miles Archer . However, Gutman was not the
one who had physically killed young Miles . The one who was responsible for
putting an end to his life was Brigid O Shaunessy. At the end of the novel, it is
discovered that it was Brigid who actually shot and killed Mr. Archer in the alley.
Once Mile s partner, Sam Spade figures this out, he says to Brigid You killed Miles
and you re going over for it. (Hammett 163) Despite figuring out this information,
this quote is indirectly referring to Mr. Gutman. Mr Gutman is the true culprit of
killing Miles Archer. Brigid s greed was
The Effect Of Music On Music
As you re planning for the reception that will follow the most special day of your life,
you re going to need to make a choice on the music. You can either hire a band to
play live at your event, or employ a DJ to MC the festivities. Here are [] benefits
explaining why you should consider using a DJ to spin your weddingtunes.
Convenience Factor
Setting up a live band and their sound system is a complex ordeal. There is usually
some type of stage assembly, plus you re going to need to fill the time gaps when a
band needs a break. When you elect to have live music for your wedding reception,
you actually have to account for these break periods. This means you re going to
have to think about two ways to keep the music flowing.

They may know how to play dozens of songs very well, but you will be restricted to
a set number of choices. Hiring a DJ essentially gives you an endless number of
songs, not to mention limitless types of music genre.
DJs, especially those who use modern digital technology, come armed with literally
thousands of song choices. There will not be a genre of music requested where they
cannot supply hundreds of artists and innumerous song titles. When you opt for a DJ
over a live band, you add artist variety and song diversity to enthuse all your guests.
Songs Sound Familiar
As hard as a live band tries, rarely are they talented enough to duplicate their
selection of music perfectly. Sometimes dancers will have a hard time telling what
song they re actually playing. DJs spin the music by the original artist, so your
reception guest will get to hear their favorite tunes rendered perfectly.
No improvisation, no sound covers, just the genuine song at the correct rhythm and
beat. You want your guests to enjoy dancing to all the songs, not just the select few
that sound good. Your DJ will not only bring and immense variety of musical
selections, they will sound just like they re intended to sound.
Resolving the music question for your wedding reception is an important part of
planning for your special day. Trying to coordinate with a live act to play the music
can be an involved and costly process. Why not just hand over this significant part of
your reception to
Industrial And Commercial Bank Of China
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), a state owned commercial bank,
is a strong pillar of the development of basic industries in China, and its role in the
financial system is and will always be irreplaceable. The most obvious function is to
support the real economy. During 2015, the balance of loans extended by the bankto
strategic emerging industries reached RMB369.729 billion, increasing by 11.99%
over the prior year; the balance of loans to cultural industries reached RMB175.457
billion, increased by 14.36%. And it offers diversified financial products and services
to over 5 million corporate customers and nearly 500 million personal customers.

Improving A Patient s Patient Essay
In today s world, hospitals are seeing an influx of patients now more than ever.
These rising numbers are primarily due to the fact that patients have more access to
healthcare and are therefore living longer, but also sicker. This increase in patient
population is a huge concern for hospitals as the threat of limited space is often a
reality. According to statistics released by the Healthcare Financial Management
Association, with rapid growth of the healthcare industry, healthcare production from
2010 to 2020 will increase from $1.8 trillion to $3.1 trillion, growing by over 70%;
the increase of patients will significantly impact the availability of beds and spaces in
the hospital(Hegwer).
Focusing on ways to safely decrease length of stay in order to make room for new
patients and keep hospital costs down is a primary concern of healthcare institutions.
An overcapacity of patients could cause a cancelation of operating room cases and
delayed incoming hospital transfers, leading to possible losses in patient revenue. The
purpose of this research is to analyze and discuss how to effectively decrease a patient
s length of stay in a hospital in order to save the most amount of money with the
rising healthcare costs. Some of these approaches include reimbursement payment
methodologies, technological advancements, proper triage and diagnosis, discharge
practices, multidisciplinary teamwork and patient education.
Prior to discussing these strategies, it is important to note
Kidney Transplants
Kidney transplants have been known since 1954 when it was first performed at
Brigham Woman s hospital in Boston. Although technology and technique involved
have improved, the waiting list for a kidney transplant (which is the most common
transplanted organ) continues to increase. In 2012 there were 95,000 individuals
waiting for a transplant yet only about 16,500 transplants were performed that year.
Introducing a new system that offers compensation for people who give up their
organs is what some believe the most effective way to decrease the waiting list.
Individuals waiting on a transplant and their family members endure many hardships
such as; the high cost of the transplant, hardships of dialysis, and reduced life
expectancy.Individuals... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paying someone $15,000 for a kidney will save money and time based solely on
common sense. Even if this new system only increases organ donations by a small
percentage the overall outcome will be a lot better then what it is now. Although
this system seems practical and efficient, to many it is immoral. Paying
individuals $15,000 for a kidney would ultimately save the recipient about
$330,000 and an improved liberalized lifestyle. In a transplant the recipient of the
kidney is the only person receiving a tangible benefit. If the person who donates
receives compensation in return this individual will also benefit financially. The
word donation is defined as an act or instance of presenting something as a gift,
grant, or contribution . Taking this definition into account the idea of organ
donations would be nonexistent. The article presents the fact that the waiting list is
getting larger and larger due to the lack of donations. Setting up a capitalist market
for body parts may in no doubt increase the donations yet, who are the people that
will be selling their organs? The less wealthy therefore implementing a system in
which the poor are working as replacement parts for the rich. Paying for organs is
immoral because it treats the human body as a commodity, but is it more immoral to
ignore the fact that we can possibly prevent thousands of deaths by
American Gothic Art Style
American Gothic
There are many things that go into the thought behind creating such a masterful art
piece that would be shown in famous museums. The thing about art is that the viewer
can understand the artist through his final piece. These pieces can be shown around
the world to all different people. Chicago, also known as The Windy City , has many
famous museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago. The museum is one of the
most famous art museums in the world attracting more then 1.5 million visitors
annually. The Art Institute contains collections of Impressionist, Post impressionists,
and American paintings.
Among the most important pieces from the Art Institute that I found is Grant Wood s
most famous painting from the 1930 s. Wood mastered the painting called American
Gothic. In the 20th century American Art, this has become one of the most familiar
representational art pieces. Many individuals have seen and tried to ... Show more

By this I mean that Wood uses this style in many different forms in order for the
viewer to get the theme of the painting. As I said before, Wood uses repetition and
space to help the viewers identify the roles of each individual and lifestyles. I
believe that Grant created this painting in order for the American society to
understand this time period. After looking at the facial expressions of the man and
woman, one could suggest that they are unhappy during the Great Depression, but
they are, in fact, survivors. Like I explained before, the colors and elongated facial
expressions cause the mood of the painting to shift negatively fast. They express
sadness and seriousness. I believe that Wood created this work of art in order to get
people to understand the concept of historic economic downturn. Most of society
doesn t live in the rural areas and Grant may have created that knowingly. This image

Gesture Is An Important Part Of Language
Gesture is an important part of language the world over. Apart from sign languages,
gestures, or talking with one s hands, largely go unnoticed by a majority of
speakers. That being said, there are some gestures that are so integral to a language
that ignoring them is impossible. Such gestures can widely vary across languages
and the world, and making a mistake with them can be disastrous. To alleviate some
of this confusion, incorporating gestures into dictionaries of a specific languageor
country may be helpful, as well as indexing and recording such gestures. This
process, though, may prove to be a complicated endeavor. Gestures, due to their
ubiquitous use and arbitrary meanings, should be indexed conclusively into
dictionaries of their corresponding languages and possibly even resources of their
own. Gestureis an incredibly effective way to convey an idea and are an essential
part of many languages. In most languages, gesture serves as a way to emphasize
speech or to say a short phrase without speaking. They have been conventionalized
in society, and while they do not have all the same linguistic properties as words
do, their meaning within their culture is undeniable. As Rousseau says, one speaks
more effectively to the eye than to the ear. (8) It can be hard to mistake something
as simple as a head nod or a wave in greeting. Gestures such as the ones above and
others such as thumbs up, now ingrained in social media sites such as Facebook, are

The Velcrofessionals In The School System
The Velcro Effect article had many very good points and shared a lot of informative
information. The beginning story about Beth really opened my eyes to how we tend
to just assume the level of help a student needs, with out actually giving them the
chance to tell us or show us. The school system seems to label students and place
them with paraprofessionals, with out fully examining the situation and what can be
done. Paraprofessionals are much needed in the schoolsystem and play many roles,
however they are not qualified for all the roles they are given. The article shares how
many paraprofessionals are teaching and helping students with disabilities that they
are simply unable to teach, because they are not qualified. This is not beneficial
Describe How To Paint Your Nails Research Paper
Have you ever thought it was a certain way to paint your nails? Did you know that
keeping your nails done is actually beneficial? It shows and tells people that you re
a well kept person. That characteristic is important for things such as job interviews.
It s just a few steps you must follow to achieve painting your nails properly. First,
you start off by picking a nailcolor of your choice. Picking your nail color is never
really a random choice . Whether you no it or not, the color you pick is linked to
your emotions. Secondly, you find a stable surface and a well lit room where you
can lay your hands to paint your nails. Third, you gather all necessary supplies such
as nail polish remover, cotton balls, and a nail filer. Then,
The Importance Of Extrinsic Motivation In Students
Despite the use of primary language support to facilitate the understanding of
instructions/tasks in English, the ways students engage in class discussions and
activities and interact with peers during pair and group works are important aspects to
look at. Students engagement and performance in learning English may certainly
depend on how highly motivated students are toward their learning goals. Thus,
motivationis one of the most important components in the learning process. Students
love to learn, when they are highly motivated to learn. Bruning et al. (2011) stated
that motivation is the neglected heart of instruction . In other words, while planning a
lesson, the motivational factors should be taken in consideration since they play a
huge role in students performance, attitudes, behaviors, and even creativity (Ryan
Deci, 2000). Indeed, every teacher uses several different strategies to keep their
students engaged and committed to the tasks by promoting more individual or class
participations. The two types of motivation, such as intrinsic and extrinsic, are really
important to figure out their impact on students learning performance, especially in
English.
The intrinsic motivation refers to behaviors performed for one s own interest and
satisfaction, whereas extrinsic refers to behaviors performed to reach some externally
rewards, usually without interest (Bruning et al., 2011). I will direct my focus to the
extrinsic motivation with particular emphasis to

Describe a major goal you ve set for yourself recently. Give an example of a goal
you both set and achieved. Ideally, this should be a professional goal; such as
improved time management skills, achieved new performance targets, or learned

of accomplishments. For example, if you take a great deal of initiative and quickly
move into leadership positions, you might use a personal example relating to your
recent community work: organized a community walk a thon that raised $30,000 in
matching funds to purchase new computers for the local library. Talk about results
of achieving your goal. This indicates you set realistic goals and that you can focus

Essay about Gender Stereotypes Among Children s Toys
Gender Stereotypes Among Children s Toys
When you walk into the toy section of any store, you do not need a sign to indicate
which section is the girls side and which section is the boys side. Aside from all
the pink, purple, and other pastel colors that fill the shelves on the girls side, the
glitter sticks out a lot as well. The boys toys however are mostly dark colors blue,
black, red, gray, or dark green. The colors typically used on either side are very
stereotypical in themselves.
I noticed the girls toys engaged fine motor skills more than the boys toys did. The
girls have several different types and sizes of dolls to choose from however, this also

The boys toys mostly all used gross motor skills. Like the dolls in the girls section,
the boys have equally as many types of cars or other vehicles to choose from. The
boys side consisted of mainly three categories all together 1) action figures, 2) role
toys (guns Cops and Robbers or Cowboys and Indians ; ax, helmet, and badge
fireman; and miniature tools for pretending to be a construction worker) 3) cars.
I discovered there weren t really any toys in the boys section that didn t fit in one
of these three categories. All the boys toys were very stereotypical. The extreme
concentration of cars in the boys toys shows the stereotypical attitude that all boys
like cars. The toys that weren t car related all promoted either an aggressive
behavior or manly job. Like the girls section, very few toys didn t promote a
stereotypical idea.
Few toys were aimed equally at both genders. Even board games, while intended
for both sexes, usually seemed aimed more towards one gender or another. Both
sections had a lot of gender stereotypical toys. General ideas on girls and boys
behaviors and interests were very prevalent in the toys intended for each gender.
After really looking at the toys in both sections it is easy to understand why
stereotypical ideas about both genders are so strong since these ideas are introduced

My Wheelchair Simulation Experience Essay
Introduction
My wheelchair simulation experience took place on Monday, September 26th. I
started in my on campus dorm around 6pm. After wheeling around for a half hour,
I began making my way to CafГ© 210 for dinner and drinks with a friend. The
textbook mentions that participants will experience that even the best laid plans
will lead them into the unexpected (Dattilo, 2012, p. 74) and it was especially true
throughout my simulation. I realized that making it to CafГ© was a very lofty
goal and given that it was raining, made it nearly impossible. I had to call the friend
I was meeting and change where we were meeting, deciding on the much closer
Inferno. We spent about two hours eating and catching up before pulling out a
deck of cards and playing a few card games for another hour. After our long dinner,
we went our separate ways and I made my way back to my dorm where I watched a
half hour of the first presidential debate. While my activities were brief, I was able
to spend quite a bit of time outside of my room, maneuvering on my own, and my
experience benefited from it.
Environmental Barriers
Originally, I predicted that I would only mark two waypoints. Both waypoints I
marked were on the sidewalk along the campus side of College Ave. One was along
the brick wall behind Redifer Commons, there is a crack in the sidewalk almost all
the way across, that is very uneven making it hard to traverse in a wheelchair. The
second was in front of Stephens Hall, there is an entire

Violence In Leadership

Violence has been around us our whole lives and is something that will never come
to a stop. Violence will continue through the rest of our lives and the lives to come

problem is violence and can only be helped through the kind of leadership that
demonstrates Trust and Integrity, Confidence, and a good communication. First,
trust and integrity are one of my three most important qualities that every leader
needs to have if they are gonna try to stop violence within our society. Trust and
integrity is a key quality on how we can try to stop the problem of violence in our
society. Talking about integrity, Oprah Winfrey said: Real integrity is doing the
right, knowing that nobody s going to know whether you did it or not. What she

Confidence is very important because when you make decisions and you aren t

The Importance Of Commercial Buildings In The Ottoman
Empire
Secondly, commercial buildings were so popular in Cairo because it was already a
major trading point for the Ottoman Empire. The different type of commercial
buildings were wikalas, khans, qaisariyas, suqs, and funduqs. Ismail explains that
these type of buildings existed since the Mameluke Empire period, but they were kept
being built during the Ottoman Empire, with some minor changes.
The wikalas were buildings located within the city walls and had a design that had
shops on the ground floor that faced onto courtyards and a rab system (living
quarters) on the upper floors. Some of the shops from the ground level had special
designs in their facades that allowed the merchants to display the imported goods
that they had for sale. The building had only one entrance per each facade, and
each of them led to the open central courtyard that aside from shops, had
storerooms for the merchant s goods. To get access to the upper floors, people had
to use staircases that were usually placed in a corner of the facades (Ismail 2005).
The khans and funduqs were buildings that had combined functions of hostel and
trading centre and were used mostly by traveling merchants and visitors to the city.
These buildings were built mostly near the trading routes outside the city, and they
required towers for extra protection, however, some of them were located inside the
city and did not required to be fortified because of it. A major difference is that these
buildings did not had shops in
Essay on Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Disaster
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Disaster It is a silent enemy, it has no odor,
no smell, no shape, yet it is one of man s deadliest foes. Radiation is not something
most people face on a daily basis, but for the town of Prypiat in the Ukraine it is a
barren wasteland because of it. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster was
the worst nuclear catastrophe to have ever occurred and, is a perfect example of
what can happen when the blind and unmasked furry of atomic power is left
unharnessed. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is near the town of Prypiat,
Ukraine, 18 km northwest of the city of Chernobyl, 16 km from the border of
Ukraine and Belarus, and about 110 km north of Kyiv. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power

Therefore, the test program was not formally coordinated with either the chief
designer of the reactor, nor with the scientific manager. Instead, it was approved
only by the director of the plant. According to the test parameters, at the start of the
experiment, the thermal output of the reactor should have been no lower than 700
MW. If the conditions of the reactor had been as planned, the test almost certainly
would have proceeded safely. The eventual disaster resulted from attempts to boost
the reactor output once the experiment had started, inconsistent with the approved
procedure. (Marples 39 43) The Chernobyl power plant had been in operation for
two years without the capability to ride through the first 60 75 seconds of a total
loss of electric power. The station managers wished to correct this at the first
opportunity. This may explain why they continued the test, even when serious
problems arose, and why the requisite approval for the test was not sought from the
Soviet nuclear oversight regulator. (Gale 22 25) At 1:23:04 a.m. the experiment
began, the steam to the turbines was shut off, and a run down of the turbine generator
began, together with the four Main Circulating Pumps (MCP). The diesel generator
started and sequentially picked up loads, which was complete by 01:23:43; during
this period the power for these four MCPs was supplied by the coasting down turbine
generator. As the momentum
Credit Card And Credit Cards
Being invited by the president of Joliet Junior College to help students who are
being lured by credit predators on the myth that getting a credit card helps people to
build their credits. We will use this opportunity to educate the audience on the
concept of credit cards and its responsible use in order to avoid its snares.
Furthermore, we plan on assisting the audience to gain insight on the rationale behind
building good credit through borrowing. According to Tim Chen, the author of
American Household Credit Card Debt, an article published in the year 2015, the
average student loan debt is $31,946. He also states that there s a total of $1.19
trillion in debt for student loans, which have increased 5.9% from last year. In this
paper, we will discuss the myth of how students are being lured by credit card
predators by assuming that getting a credit card helps people build their credits. We
will also use this opportunity to define the concept of credit card and its responsible
use in order to avoid its snares. Furthermore, alert the audience of other ways to build
credit such as through borrowing and getting students loan in less interest rate from
the bank.

With Prevention Point s passion for advocacy to prevent HIV, 25 SSPs began

Some of those groups that stand behind this policy are major medical and public

The Canadian Government And Aboriginal People
To many people, Canada exemplifies a country that fulfills human rights and equality
being the country of freedom . However, the Canadian government has distorted
certain information including poverty that impacts many Aboriginal individuals
daily. In theory, it is impossible to effectively analysis the impact that the past has
imposed on Aboriginal people in Canada today. With this being said addressed below
are several important historical government actions and legislations such as the
Indian Act, Royal Proclamation, force segregation on reserves, and residential
schooling impacting Aboriginal Canadians social conditions today. Fundamentally
my goal is to address the idea that historical events are a crucial factor impacting

The primary goal of the Indian Act was to demolish any Aboriginal Canadians
attempt to sovereignty and self determination. Its promise to provide adequate living
condition on reserves and social welfare services are few of many broken promises
that Aboriginal Canadians did not acquire. Instead the Indian act consisted of
assimilating policies stripping aboriginal Canadians of their status. The principle
behind the Act was that it was the Crown s responsibility to care for and protect
interests of First Nations people by acting as their guardians until such time as they
could reach a level of sophistication that allowed them to fully integrate into Canadian
society (Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development of Canada, 2011). This quote,
taken right from the Government of Canada s website is an example of how the
Federal government defines the Indian Act today. Terminology used amplifying
control; sophistication is important indicators of colonization and assimilation tactics
in which the government imposed in the past, and upheld today. A major implication
of the Indian Act included Aboriginal identity in terms of status and
George S. Patton Rhetorical Leadership
Respected by most, yet feared by many, General George S. Patton was one of the
most profound leaders the United States Army has ever had. He took part throughout
the Mexican Revolution, World War One, and dominating the stage throughout World
War Two. His career as an officer took stage shortly after his graduation from The
United States ArmyMilitary Academy, where he branched as a cavalry officer
(Patton, Wikipedia, 2017). Inpatient and young, he eventually went on his first
deployment as a lieutenant to take part in the battle of San Miguelito. It was in
Mexico that Patton met General John Joseph Pershing, where it is believed that he
based a lot of his military leadership styles on the way Pershing led his troops
(Pershing, Wikipedia, 2017). Through imitating Pershing, George had some of the
most courageous leadership styles known widely throughout, where many praised
his bravery, yet several found him foolish. Following the battle of San Miguelito,
Patton was promoted to Captain and appointed by General Pershing to the head of
the new AEF Tank Corps. (Pershing, Wikipedia, 2017). It was throughout the process
of developing the AEF Tank Corps. that I feel Patton demonstrated his most profound
adaptive leadership trait, drive. George Patton was driven in anything and everything
he did for the AEF Tank Corps. He implemented his own ideas, tactics, design,
uniform, and procedures in a way that revolutionized war (PATTON 360, 2015). The

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Wet Candy
Wet Caramel
Sugar + enough water to moisten the sugar.
Start Heating the Pan (115 120oC)
Use a wet pastry brush to eliminate sugar crystals
As the amber brown colour appears turn the heat to medium
Add any other ingredient s if required.
Start string the mixture
Once final required colour is attained stop cooking and Pour in moulds
CARAMEL AND CRYSTALLIZATION
When a wet caramel is made, first we make a sugar syrup which is sugar dissolved
in water. The water evaporates as heating process continue to make caramel, the
syrup becomes super saturated, which means that it holds more sugar molecules
than the normal capacity of water. Due to this, the sugar tries to re crystallize. If
this happens, final product ends up with a pan full of clear rock candy. In order to
avoid this, we have to make sure pan is spotlessly clean. Sugar molecules have
jagged edges and can easily stick to each other or to the impurities from the pan. A
tool is required to stir caramel, which may contain impurities leading to
crystallization, some people also say that stirring in itself (after the sugar has
dissolved) can cause the sugar syrup to crystallize, as stirring encourages the sugar
molecules to clump together. So instead, swirling the pan is another option

As the sugar and water boil, sugar syrup might fall on the wall of the pot, where it
evaporates very fast and thus forming back into sugar crystals. Even if one of these
crystals falls back into the syrup, it can cause a chain reaction, which turns the clear
syrup opaque and grainy. This can be avoided by removing it from the heat, adding
a few tablespoons of water, returning it to the heat, and stirring until the crystals
dissolve before continuing on However, it s better to keep recrystallization from
occurring in the first place, so there are a few ways to prevent

Privacy Is The Appropriate Word Of Privacy From A

Privacy in German Culture Dignity over liberty is the appropriate phrase to depict
the essence of privacy from a German perspective. Stemming from roots dating back
to the mid 12th Century, Germans erected a common ideology of individual
realization that has become a universal standard of its people. Unlike many Western
civilizations, Germans digest privacy as a personality upholding construct, rather
than an oppressive act of rights enforced by the government. Anything that
seemingly inhibits or defiles one s personal character is considered an invasion of
privacy. While being especially relevant during the divided prowess of the Berlin wall

Perspective. This film takes place in 1983 East Berlin. Weisler, a member of the
Stasi forces, was assigned to spy on a distinguished playwright, Georg Dreyman.
While Dreyman currently placed under government suspicion, Weisler is ordered
to dig deeper for more information about his personal life. While Dreyman was
away, Wisler and his forces broke into his apartment and bugged every room.
Afterwards, Wisler threatens Dreyman s neighbor to not tell anyone what she saw.
If she does, she may be subject to dire consequences. This scene is especially
important because exemplifies the amount of power the Stasi had during that time.
If there is any suspicion about a particular individual, there would be relentless
efforts of which to obtain information. Another example of this occurrence, is when
Weisler loses his job as a spy and is forced to work in the mailroom. Wisler and his
colleagues are primarily responsible for checking every letter that comes through
Eastern Germany. Anything deemed as a potential threat would be thrown out or
reported immediately. This scene illustrates the level of

  • 2. A Report On A Cox Model Essay A Cox model is a well recognized statistical technique for exploring the relationship between the survival of a patient and several explanatory variables. A Cox model provides an estimate of the treatment effect on survival after adjustment for other explanatory variables. It allows us to estimate the hazard (or risk) of death, or other event of interest, for individuals, given their prognostic variables. Interpreting a Cox model involves examining the coefficients for each explanatory variable. A positive regression coefficient for an explanatory variable means that the hazard for patient having a high positive value on that particular variable is high. Conversely, a negative regression coefficient implies a better prognosis for patients with higher values of that variable. Cox s method does not assume any particular distribution for the survival times, but it rather assumes that the effects of the different variables on survival are constant over time and are additive in a particular scale [17]. The hazard function is the probability that an individual will experience an event (for example, death) within a small time interval, given that the individual has survived up to the beginning of the interval. In this model the unique effect of a per unit increase in a variable or covariate is assumed to be multiplicative with respect to the hazard rate [18]. For example, taking a drug may halve one s hazard rate for a stroke occurring, or, changing the material from which a
  • 3. Troy Chapter 2 Summary Chapter Two Summary When news of Magellan s planned voyage reaches King Manuel, he becomes alarmed. Fearing the possibility of a successful Spanish voyage and the loss of Portuguese naval secrets, he sends the Portuguese ambassador Alvaro de Costa to find Magellan. Although de Costa says the king will reconsider the request for an expedition, this promise has a dark undertone. If Magellan and Faleiro refuse to come back to Portugal, de Costa warns that they will lose all their honor, that their family and friends will suffer, and that they will risk upsetting the delicate truce between Portugal and Spain. Magellan knows that that if he accepts the offer, he will most likely be convicted of treason and then executed, so he tactfully declines. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Seville is one of the greatest contemporary cities: both a commercial center, as showcased by its thriving trade, and a religious center, home to the third largest church in the world. As a Portuguese captain sailing for Spain, Magellan is not well received by the people of Seville. His coat of arms is mistaken for that of the Portuguese king, and an angry mob attacks Magellan and his crew. Although Magellan escapes harm, this shows that Magellan is powerless against the people, foreshadowing a future mutiny. However, Magellan cannot dwell on the incident, as his work is far from done. He needs to purchase supplies for the journey, including food, sailing gear, weapons, etc. The food for only the first leg of the journey costs nearly as much as the entire fleet, so this job requires great attention to detail. He is also faced with the task of assembling a crew, which proves to be more difficult than usual due to his Portuguese heritage. He tries to enlist as many Spaniards as possible, but most Spaniards do not want to sail under a Portuguese captain. Therefore, he is forced to include many foreigners in his crew. This leads to scrutiny amid accusations of Magellan packing his crew with Portuguese, but after some concessions from both sides the Armada is ready to

It might not always be practical to deal with all customers queries within the space of a few hours, but at least email or call them back and let them know you ve received their message and you ll contact them about it as soon as possible. Even if you re not able to solve a problem right away, let the customer know you re working on it. 3. Be Friendly and Approachable A fellow Site Pointer once told me that you can hear a smile through the phone. This is very true. It s very important to be friendly, courteous and to make your clients feel like you re their friend and you re there to help them out. There will be times when you want to beat your clients over the head repeatedly with a blunt object it happens to all of us. It s vital that you keep a clear head, respond to your clients wishes as best you can, and at all times remain polite and courteous. 4. Have a Clearly Defined Customer Service Policy This may not be too important when you re just starting out, but a clearly defined customer service policy is going to save you a lot of time and effort in the long run. If a customer has a problem, what should they do? If the first option doesn t work, then what? Should they contact different people for billing and technical enquiries? If they re not satisfied with any aspect of your customer service, who should they tell? There s nothing more annoying for a client than being passed from person to person, or not
  • 5. Special Education Reflection Running Head: REFLECTION PAPER Reflection Paper En Tseh Wang Lehigh University Special Education 332 (Education and Inclusion of Individuals with Special Needs) has been enlightening for me as a secondary mathematics educator. In the beginning of the semester, my feelings towards special education were those of apathy and insensitivity. I now understand that my feelings were due to my lack of knowledge and my judgment based on stereotypes. I always knew that making fun of students with learning disabilities was wrong. However, I never felt that inclusion of special education students in general education classes was plausible or made sense. I felt that special education students belonged in their own classrooms; and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the greatest tools that this class has given me is universal design. I will not be able to teach my general education class with special education students in it, by using universal design
  • 6. Mark Halsey The intention of this piece is to inform the reader of the recent happenings involving Mark Halsey and how his situation raises the bigger question of the introduction of video assistant referees in top flight football. Targeted for football fans who follow high level football. In the past couple of days, the footballing world has been rocked by the claims of Mark Halsey, an ex English Premier League referee. He claims to have been told to make specific decisions about incidents which have occurred during a match. If his statement has any shred of truth, the footballing world has a very scary problem on their hands. On September 2nd, in reply to a tweet Mark Halsey admitted to having seen an incident and been told by an official of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other sports such as rugby and tennis use different types of video assistance in their respective sports to help out the officials. There is only so much a human eye can see and when an official is tired or has an obstructed view, decisions can be made incorrectly. This is when video referees can come in and help. The could allow for a replay to show them what the best decision to be made is. So many forms of VA can be used, perhaps the captains of each team get a limited amount of challenges to the referee s decision, or the referee can choose when to look at the video. Set rules like all penalties or red cards have to be reviewed by the assistant is another idea being thrown around. The English Football Association are finally beginning experiments with video referees in this season FA cup. Referees will have a tablet available for them to view Instant replays of the game, similar to the TMO for tries in Rugby. Currently, there are too many what ifs in Football, from amateur level to the international stage, it is unprofessional and not the right move to keep VA from the sport. One can only begin to imagine the amount of decisions that will be overruled and the countless decisions that could ve been corrected if this technology had been tried and tested all those numbers of years
  • 7. Exploring A Beam Bridge A beam or girder bridge is the simplest kind of bridge. In the past they may have taken the form of a log across a stream but today they are more familiar to us large box steel girder bridges. There are lots of different types of beam bridges .A Beam Bridge needs to be stiff. It needs to resist twisting and bending under load. In its most basic form, a beambridgeconsists of a horizontal beam that is supported at each end by piers. The weight of the beam pushes straight down on the piers. Under load, the beam s top surface is pushed down or compressed while the bottom edge is stretched or placed under tension. If we imagine that there is an imaginary line running down the center of the beam this line remains at its original length while... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A concrete beam is prestressed by pulling on steel rods running through the beam and then anchoring the ends of the rods to the ends of the beam. This exerts a compressive force on the concrete, offsetting tensile forces that are exerted on the beam when a load is placed on it. (A weight pressing down on a horizontal beam tends to bend the beam downward in the middle, creating compressive forces along the top of the beam and tensile forces along the bottom of the beam.) Prestressing can be applied to a concrete beam that is precast at a factory, brought to the construction site, and lifted into place by a crane; or it can be applied to cast in place concrete that is poured in the beam s final location. Tension can be applied to the steel wires or rods before the concrete is poured (pretensioning), or the concrete can be poured around tubes containing un tensioned steel to which tension is applied after the concrete has hardened
  • 8. Describe The Importance Of The Colosseum The Colosseum Koch, Matt Do you know what one of the most important structures to mankind history is? The Colosseum. The importance of the Colosseum, otherwise known originally as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was that many of the materials, styles, and architecture were inspiring to many architects and designers constructing today s modern facilities and structures. The emperor of Rome at the time, Vespasian, began building the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) in 72 AD. They believed that in ancient Rome the patron was more noble and loyal than the architects, and the architects were just craftsmen and hired hands (Woog, 2014). So as of today the designers and architects are unknown to the world, and will probably never be found out about because if limited evidence. Floor plans, 3 dimensional scale models, perspective drawings, and full size design sketches are what were used by the anonymous architects and designers of the Colosseum (Hopkins, 2011). The site of construction was formerly known as the Golden House, owned and lived in by Nero the Emperor. This was drained and as a precaution against potential earthquake damage concrete foundations six metres deep were put down to support it (Cartwright, 2012). And eight long years of hard work and design later the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) was completed in 80 CE. There were many materials mixed in the project of constructing the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre). The walls of the Colosseum were built with stone. They made use of a number of arches in order to keep the weight down, but yet still keep them strong (Cartwright, 2012). The floor of the Colosseum was wooden and usually covered in sand most of the time. But the floor was taken out due to heavy weathering in 1674 AD. And about 19 miles outside of Rome in a little town of Tivoli were quarries where the Romans mined there stone blocks out of to construct the walls of the Colosseum. Some other material they had used to construct the colosseum include, limestone brick, concrete and volcanic stone (otherwise known as tufa ), pumice stone. And including bronze, which was used for statues around the stadium. But some parts of the colosseum that are made of concrete are not authentic original to the

His parents were Ukrainian Jews whom joined the great influx of Russians into Canada, prior to the turn of the century. His family moved to Dauphin, in Manitoba Canada where his father was the owner of a fairly, successful tailoring business. After Goffman completed three years in high school in Winnipeg, due to his academics exceeding he could enroll as a student at the University of Manitoba, chemistry was his major. (Burns 1992) Frank Cioffi evaluated Goffman s work fills his pages with observations and insights about matters we already know well enough and which in any event have been made available to us for ages by novelist and essayists. (Burns 1992) Clifford Geertz names Goffman as perhaps the most celebrated American Sociologist right now, and certainly the most ingenious . (Burns 1992) Alvin Gouldners coming crisis of western sociology, depicted Goffman as an apologist for capitalism overly cynical and far too concerned with the trivial. (Scott, Marshall, 2009) Ray Harris in another Times Literary supplement review called him a public private eye...forever on the lookout for candid commerce evidence which might lead to divorce proceedings between ourselves and our social images. Born in the 5th century BCE, Plato was a rationalist, idealist philosopher, believing that we are born with concepts within us, and that these concepts are the same for everyone (Solomon, Higgins, Martin, 2012). Through his beliefs, Plato developed a theory which he believed answered the question of What is reality? , that he called the theory of Forms(Solomon, et al., 2012). According to Plato, the Forms are a perfect ideal of an object or a concept, which is unchanging and innate within us (Solomon, et al., 2012). It is because of the Forms, according to Plato, that we have the ability to know what something is even though we may not have seen that exact thing before (Solomon, et al., 2012). The Allegory of the Cave is a dialogue between Socrates and Glaucon in Plato s The Republic (Solomon, et al., 2012). The Allegory of the Cave tells the story of people who are chained facing a wall in a cave, where they cannot turn around. There is a fire on a ledge behind them and people on the ledge. A person walks behind the chained people, along the ledge holding a figure of a horse on a stick above his head so that the fire can reflect the image of the horse as a shadow on the cave wall for the chained people to see. The chained people are to guess what the figure is. One person is freed from the chain of people and made to leave the cave, where they see the forms of what was reflected on the wall. This individual comes back to the cave to tell the people that are chained the difference and what they have not seen, however they do not believe him and for this reason wish that if they could, they would kill him (Solomon, et al., 2012). This allegory provides an example of appearance and reality. According to Plato s theory of the Forms, the shadow on the wall of the cave is the appearance of the horse. It is there, it can be seen however it cannot exist without the actual figure of the horse, the reality. Because the shadow cannot exist without the actual figure, this analogy shows the distinction and relationship between reality and appearance according to Plato s theory. However,
  • 11. Pros And Cons Of In Vitro Fertilisation ( IVF ) In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a process of fertilisation where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body, in vitro( in glass ). The process involves monitoring and stimulating a woman s ovulatory process, removing and ovum or ova (egg or eggs) from the woman s ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a liquid in a laboratory. The fertilised egg (zygote) undergoes embryo culture for 2 6 days, and is the transferred to the same or another woman s uterus, with the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) refers to the genetic profiling of embryos prior to implantation, and sometimes even of oocytes prior to fertilization. PGD is considered in a similar fashion to prenatal diagnosis. When used to screen for a specific genetic disease, it s main advantage is that it avoids selective pregnancy termination as the method makes it highly likely that the baby will be free of the disease under consideration. PGD thus aids assisted reproductive technology, and requires in vitro fertilization (IVF) to obtain embryos or oocytes for evaluation. While PGD has many benefits, especially for potential parents who may be at risk of passing on genetic defects, opposition to the use if this technology has come in many forms. Opposition ranges from the view which believes an embryo has full moral status from the moment of conception to the other end of the scale where people believe that the use of this technology will lead

With states having the option to choose legalization, the few that have the law in place limit its use to terminally ill patients (Ardelt 5). Terminal illness is defined as a disease that cannot be cured or adequately treated and is expected to result in death of the patient within a short time (Benjamin 4). Most recent is Vermont, which legalized assisted suicide in May 2013, making legalization relevant to today s society and issues with the possibility of more states legalizing these methods (Benjamin 3). With millions of patients being diagnosed with terminal illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, and fatal accidents, both those patients and their families are exposed to the compelling aspects of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide (Swarte 2). Euthanasia and physician assisted suicide should not be legalized in the United States due to safety concerns, economic challenges, and society s outlook on these

The 1920 s was a huge era for great inventions and technology. This period of time is referred to as the Roaring twenties, a decade of excitement, success and determination. Scientists spent decades trying to find a breakthrough, and it was not until the 21th century that it was found. Charles Francis Jenkin s system helped lead to the first construction of the T.V. He had demonstrated a scanning system with a revolving disk, he called it radio vision. Jenkins system worked but the images were blurry. Another inventor named Herbert E. Jitter and shimmer are measures of the cycle to cycle variations of fundamental frequency and amplitude, respectively, which have been largely used for the description of pathological voice quality. Jitter is also known as frequency perturbation and refers to the minute involuntary variations in the timing variability between cycles of vibration. In essence, it is a measure of frequency variability in comparison to the client s fundamental frequency. Research shows that jitter values in normal voices range from 0.2 to 1 percent. The vocal note produced by the vibrations of the vocal folds is complex and made up of periodic (regular and repetitive) and aperiodic (irregular and non repetitive) sound waves. The aperiodic waves are random noise introduced into the vocal signal owing to irregular or asymmetric adduction (closing) of the vocal folds. Noise impairs the clarity of the vocal note and too much noise is perceived as hoarseness. The Harmonics to Noise (HNR) ratio is a measure of the proportion of harmonic sound to noise in the voice measured in decibels. (Ferrand, 2007). HNR quantifies the relative amount of additive noise (Awen Frankel, 1994) The lower the HNR, the more noise in the voice. Laryngeal pathology may lead to poor adduction of the vocal folds and, therefore, increase the amount of random noise in the vocal note. If a person has some kind of problem in vibrating the vocal folds, due to a growth, paralysis of one or both vocal folds, or other kind of laryngeal problem, a larger amount of air escapes during vibration, creating turbulent noise. (Pabon Plomp, 1988) The greater the proportion of noise, the greater the perceived hoarseness, breathiness or roughness and the lower the HNR figure will be, i.e. a low HNR indicates a high level of hoarseness, and a high HNR indicates a low level of hoarseness. There is a strong relationship between how we perceive voice quality and the harmonic to noise ratio (Ferrand, 2007).

Religious ideologies regarding dress are based on religious organizations individual dogmas, who believe that your outwardly appearance should reflect your inner beliefs. Similarly, adhering to a strict code of dress, that symbolizes its group s traditions and customs, also helps in controlling the body s sexuality. Hunt Hurst and Miller Spillman (2012) stated that being well dressed (modestly) is a religious duty and not a personal preference (p. 266). Dress in a matter of speaking is an outwardly symbol of religious identification and showing ones connectedness to their religious organization. Arthur (n.d.) believes a group identity is projected through dress because people use self presentation and self promotion to visually present identity that is congruent with their belief systems (Religionand Dress, para. 1). Since each religious organization perceives the role of dress, as it pertains to the expression of identity, differently one must also understand the basis of said religious organizations beliefs in order to comprehend how their beliefs mirror the role of dress. Essay about Gender Stereotypes Among Children s Toys Gender Stereotypes Among Children s Toys When you walk into the toy section of any store, you do not need a sign to indicate which section is the girls side and which section is the boys side. Aside from all the pink, purple, and other pastel colors that fill the shelves on the girls side, the glitter sticks out a lot as well. The boys toys however are mostly dark colors blue, black, red, gray, or dark green. The colors typically used on either side are very stereotypical in themselves. After wheeling around for a half hour, I began making my way to CafГ© 210 for dinner and drinks with a friend. The textbook mentions that participants will experience that even the best laid plans will lead them into the unexpected (Dattilo, 2012, p. 74) and it was especially true throughout my simulation. I realized that making it to CafГ© was a very lofty goal and given that it was raining, made it nearly impossible. I had to call the friend I was meeting and change where we were meeting, deciding on the much closer Inferno. We spent about two hours eating and catching up before pulling out a deck of cards and playing a few card games for another hour. After our long dinner, we went our separate ways and I made my way back to my dorm where I watched a half hour of the first presidential debate. While my activities were brief, I was able to spend quite a bit of time outside of my room, maneuvering on my own, and my experience benefited from it. Environmental Barriers Originally, I predicted that I would only mark two waypoints. Both waypoints I marked were on the sidewalk along the campus side of College Ave. One was along the brick wall behind Redifer Commons, there is a crack in the sidewalk almost all the way across, that is very uneven making it hard to traverse in a wheelchair. The second was in front of Stephens Hall, there is an entire

The different type of commercial buildings were wikalas, khans, qaisariyas, suqs, and funduqs. Ismail explains that these type of buildings existed since the Mameluke Empire period, but they were kept being built during the Ottoman Empire, with some minor changes. The wikalas were buildings located within the city walls and had a design that had shops on the ground floor that faced onto courtyards and a rab system (living quarters) on the upper floors. Some of the shops from the ground level had special designs in their facades that allowed the merchants to display the imported goods that they had for sale. The building had only one entrance per each facade, and each of them led to the open central courtyard that aside from shops, had storerooms for the merchant s goods. To get access to the upper floors, people had to use staircases that were usually placed in a corner of the facades (Ismail 2005). The khans and funduqs were buildings that had combined functions of hostel and trading centre and were used mostly by traveling merchants and visitors to the city.
