In a world of broken systems, intractable problems and too little time, our obvious choice is to just keep going. Lauren Currie spells out why, when it comes to doing good, it’s time to raise our game.
Talk UX: Designers Guilty By Association Lauren Currie
Designers: Guilty By Association
We are known for our stylistic gestures and whimsical, indulgent ideas, often created whilst wearing black polo necks. Taxi drivers think I design shoes for living. Most designers do. They design apps to help up find pizza faster and design sexy products that help us wake up on time.
We deserve better.
I’m one of many designers who are trying to reformulate the role design can play in the world. Using the design process to tackle many of the complex and serious problems facing our society. Some call it social design, service design or design activism. BUT the labels don’t matter. What does matter is the HOW.
How does this kind of design actually work and what does this mean for our future? Judging by the speed and enthusiasm with which design students are signing up for newly created courses on experience design, social and humanitarian design, more design activists and provocateurs will emerge in the future. It’s time to get responsible.

How can an industry that places empathy at the core of its practice ignore the big problems facing South Africa and the continent? In a rapidly changing design landscape will UX designers even be relevant in the future? UX designers exist at a unique interdisciplinary juncture and it gives us the opportunity to create inspiring responses to these questions. With the maturity of design thinking, social innovation, and lean startup, we are uniquely placed to re-apply our skills to find new relevance and greater impact in doing work that matters. But taking action is not easy, even if it can be known what is to be done. In this talk David will explore the new mindsets, skills and attitudes UX designers need to adopt to shift from merely doing design to becoming design activists.
Making a difference by Doing One Less ThingAndrew Rixon
In today’s busy world, the focus appears to be on more and more doing. More mandates, regulations, guidelines and procedures. To make things worse, providing opportunities to help adults and children learn sustainable practices to living may be severely limited by the current paradigm of education – based on telling. This current state raises the key question of how can we work towards building relationships and truly empowering people to learn how to integrate sustainable practice into their day to day lives?
Sustainability Victoria's purpose is to show the way to using our resources more efficiently and reducing our everyday environmental impacts. As part of their ResourceSmart Education programs Sustainability Victoria is facilitating a growing Community of Practice that is working together to continuously improve Education for Sustainability (EfS) in Victorian communities.
The key methodology being used across this growing Community of Practice is an approach known as Open Space Technology which has at its heart the principle of “doing one less thing”, an approach that produces co-ordinated documented and action-oriented outcomes that participants themselves take responsibility for.
The presenters will share the story of how Open Space Technology has been applied to the Victorian EfS sector Community of Practice, the themes that have emerged, actions undertaken and reflections of Community of Practice members.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn how the 4 principles and one law of Open Space Technology enable people to participate in ways that are most meaningful to them.

The stories that we tell ourselves shape the way we see the world. And that shapes our behavior. As cultural storytellers, journalists influence the narratives we share. In 1999, a racially motivated shooting sparked my eighteen-year journey working with journalists to reinvent their work so that people, communities, and democracy thrive.

Why can’t we make it easier to be accessible?
Why can’t we aim for great user experiences that are also accessible? Creating accessible technology has to go beyond minimal compliance with standards that meets the law but may not be usable.
We need a bigger goal: creating delight for everyone. We’ll start by exploring what makes a delightful experience and how a good balance small pleasures and anticipated needs supports accessible UX in both big and small ways. Like any UX, this concern for users has to be part of every design decision.
But we also need to think about what it takes to make this happen. It means incorporating a wider range of people into user research and usability testing, and making accessibility a core requirement, not an afterthought. But most of all, it takes tools that are designed to support accessibility. We’ll look at some of the progress… and some of the failures that hold us back.

Reflections on design in the Scottish GovernmentLesley Thomson
Presentation given at the Service Design in Government conference in London on 20 March 2015.
Over the past couple of years, a number of teams across the Scottish Government have used a design approach in various areas of policy development and service delivery. We wanted to evaluate how design has contributed to this ‘Scottish Approach’ to government. Are there aspects of design that compliment and challenge our current approach? Where does design differ from the improvement methodology? We also wanted to reflect on the conditions needed for a successful design project.

From designing buildings to facilitating transformationHannahduP
We have an established practice when it comes to designing things. But what does design look like when applied to the messy complexity of human communities? Hannah du Plessis -- Pittsburgh based designer and lecturer in the "MFA in Design for Social Innovation " program in New York City -- is part of this emerging field. This talk is about the shift from designing when your material is physical to when your material is social. It looks at three scales - community, team and individual.

Many organizations are struggling with the gap between social media hype versus concrete results and return on investment. This session explores the way digital native organizations like Mozilla (makers of the popular open source Firefox web browser) are using smart collaborative tools and an “open everything” approach to optimize day-to-day work, bring in volunteer contributors, and advance their overall mission. If 2008 was all about going “viral” -- using the web to try and reach large numbers of people with relatively superficial engagement -- 2010 may be all about the opposite: using the right open web tools and best practices to empower smaller numbers of people to work smarter, increase impact, and get things done.
Attendees Will Walk Away With:
• A sense of where the web and social media are headed
• Best practices around “open web” tools and methods
• Ideas on increasing volunteer and community contribution inside and outside your organization
