You will get some key words to explain. Lathe machine & it's operations...
Normally, the lathes are classified by their functions. They include woodworking lathes, metalworking lathes, glass-working lathes, CNC lathes… Some main types: Woodworking lathes: contain a headstock, bed, tailstock, and tool rest.
Also you will get to know some Operations on lathe Machine
Facing
Turning
Knurling
Chamfering
Drilling etc
2. Introduction
Lathe is a machine, which removes
the metal from a piece of work to
the required shape and size.
3. Working Principle
Lathe removes unwanted materials from a piece
of work to give it the required shape and size. This
is done by holding the work rigidly between two
supports and removing the metal from the rotating
workpiece with the help of cutting tool. The
workpiece is rotating at desired speed and tool
removes the metal in the form of chips .
5. Operations Performed On Lathe Machine
Facing
Knurling
Reaming
Boring
Chamfering
Drilling
Reaming
Thread Cutting
Tapping
Parting Off
Spinning
Form Turning etc.
6. Single Point Cutting Tools :
Right Hand Tool:
◦ Cuts from right to left
Left Hand Tool:
◦ Cuts from left to right
7. Operations On Lathe Machine
Facing :
Facing is the operation of machining the ends work
piece to produce flat surface perpendicular to lathe
axis with the help of Cross Slide.
Facing is also used to cut the
work to the required length .
8. Parting :
This operation is performed to cut the workpiece
after machining to the required shape and size.
The carriage is locked at particular position before
start operation.
9. Chamfering :
This operation is performed to give bevel shape to
end of the workpiece for removing burrs and
protecting the end from being damaged .
It very essential after thread
cutting so that the nut may
pass freely on threaded
portion.
10. Drilling :
Drilling is operation of producing a cylindrical hole
by removing metal by rotating edge of cutting tool
called as Drill .
The speed and feed for drilling
operation is 25% lower than
normal speed .
11. Knurling :
Knurling is the operation producing the deep
impression of diamond shaped pattern on the
surface of the work .
It must be done at slowest speed
and roller should be lubricated
during operation .
12. Turning :
Turning is the operation to removes the unwanted
material from a workpiece to give it to required
shape and size .
Tool removes the metal
in the form of chips .
13. Taper Turning :
This operation is performed to produced a conical
surface of uniform reduction in diameter from a
cylindrical workpiece .
14. D – d
tan œ =
2 x L
Where, D = Large diameter of taper in mm.
d = Small diameter of taper in mm.
L = Length of tapered part in mm.
œ = Half taper angle.
