Identification of metal work machines and their uses. The publication is meant for Young and creative minds to discover the various tools used in the technological world.
2. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Define metalwork,
2. Identify the various types of metalwork machines,
3. State the uses of the machines,
4. State basic care and maintenance techniques of
metalwork machines.
3. DEFINITION
Metalwork is the process of creating or producing things
out of metal in a skillful manner.
Examples of metalwork are ships, bridges, engine parts
etc.
Common metalwork machines are lathe machine,
grinding machine, planing machine, milling machine,
drill press, forging machine and folding machine.
4. Lathe Machine
A lathe machine rotates the work piece on its axis to
perform various metalwork operations. These
machines remove metals by the use of rigidly
controlled hard steel cutting tool.
There are two types of lathe machine;
a. Plain lathe
b. Screw cutting lathe
The major components of lathe machines are the head
stock, the tail stock, the bed, the spindle and the
carriage.
6. Parts of a lathe machine
1. Lathe bed: This is made from cast iron material with
an inverted V-shape
2. Headstock: This is the part that holds the work piece
7. Lathe machine operations
a. Facing: Facing is done when the cutting tool moves
in a direction that is perpendicular to the axis of
rotation of the work piece being machined.
b. Taper Turning: This is the production of a piece of
round work in which one end has a bigger diameter
than the other. It is conical in shape.
c. Cylindrical turning: This is done to reduce the
diameter of a work piece.
d. Stepped Turning: This is described as a turning of
series of diameter on different sections of a work
piece.
e. Screw cutting: It is an operation of cutting of threads
on a work piece. It is used in turning single or double
start square thread on shifts.
15. Grinding machines
It is a machine that is used for breaking up parts of a
work piece. It is mainly used for work piece finishing
in other to show high surface quality as well as high
accuracy of shape and dimension.
Examples of grinding machines are; Belt, Bench,
cylinder, surface, Gear and tool and cutter
18. Milling machines
This is a milling machine which removes metal by
rotating a multi-toothed cutter that is fed into the
moving work Piece.
The two major classification of milling machines are:
1. Horizontal milling machine: This is done when the
cutting tool and the spindle move in a horizontal
manner(left-right).
2. Vertical milling machine: : This is done when the
cutting tool and the spindle move in a Vertical manner
(up and down).
21. Folding Machines
This a machine used primarily for the folding of metal
sheets. The following examples of folding machines;
Buckle folder, knife folder and paper folder.
23. Forging machine
It is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of
metal using compressive forces.
Forging is classified according to the temperature at
which it is performed;
1. Cold forging
2. Warm forging
3. Hot forging
25. Care and maintenance
Maintenance activities Descriptions
1. Regular lubrication All moving parts of machines should be
properly lubricated.
2. Sharpening of cutting machine
components
Machines designed for sharpening,
cutting and slicing should be regularly
sharpened so that the components can
maintain their sharpness.
3. Checking the alignment
specifications
The machine should be made to realign
in order to maintain accurate
specifications.
4. Regular cleanliness Dirt and debris should be carefully
removed from the machines to prevent
rust and untimely wear.
5. Machine accessories and component
parts should be properly kept
All damaged parts should be replaced
immediately.
26. Home work
1. Define the term ‘metalwork’.
2. List five components of a lathe machine
3. List three grinding machine.
