SCIENCE 4 ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 1
Effects of Force when Applied to an Object
I. Learning Competency with Code
Explain the effects of force when applied to an object (S4FE-llla-1)
II. Background Information for Learners
What is a Force?
Your everyday life involves numerous task such as cleaning
the house, washing the dishes or playing. All these activities
include several movements that need you to push or pull objects
that may react differently. These activities can set objects in
motion, shift its direction, change its shape or put an object back
into a resting position. The movement of push and pull applied is
called force.
Force can change the size and shape of an object
An object may change its size and shape when force is applied
on it. A paper may change its size and shape when you tear, cut,
or even crumple it. When you accidentally drop the flowerpot made
of clay while you are transferring your plants, it may also change
its size and shape. There are so many ways that you can do to
change the size and shape of certain object. Some ways include
pushing, compressing, bending, stretching, chopping, and
squeezing.
Force can make a stationary object move or make moving
objects move faster
A stationary ball on the floor will move by giving it a small
push through kicking it. You can make it move faster by applying
a push in the direction to where it is moving. Therefore, a force can
make a stationary object move, and it can also make a moving
object move faster.
Force can slow down or completely stop a moving object
A stationary ball on the floor can be made to stop by applying
a force. In order to stop or slow down a moving body, there is a
need to apply a force in a direction opposite to the direction of
motion of the moving body.
Force can change the direction of moving object
In a basketball game, the players can change the direction
of the ball by blocking it. With these examples, force changes the
direction of a moving object.
The player uses force to make the
ball move.
The player is blocking the ball to
stop any pass or shoot made by
the other player.
The girl is applying force by
pushing the grocery cart to make it
move.

Activity Proper
Activity 1. “How does force affect the size and shape of an
object?”
What you need:
sponge pencil
bottle cap garlic
wire egg shell
onion hammer
bar soap scissors
plastic bottle knife
cup sharpener
What to do:
1. Prepare the materials needed for the activity.
2. Think of what you can do to change the size and shape of
each material.
3. Perform the action that you have thought for each of the
material. Be careful in doing the activity. Ask the help of
your parents or older family members to make sure
that you will not hurt yourself or others.
4. Record the actions done and the effects of force applied on
each material in the data table.
5. Return all the materials used and clean your working area
after finishing the activity.

Guide Questions
1. What have you observed to the objects that you have gathered
when force was applied?
2. What are the things that you can do to change the size and
shape of an object?
.
ACTIVITY 2. “How does force affect the movement of an
object?”
Directions: Perform the activity by following the given steps
below. Ask the help of your parents or adult family members
while doing the activity.
Record your observations in the data table below.
Activity Title: Push and Go
Materials: meter stick/ruler/tape measure, any available
material at home.
Procedures:
1. Look for a toy car, ball, book, plastic chair/table, and
trolley bag.
2. Choose only 1 material and place it on flat surface of the
floor.
3. Mark a starting point on the floor. Gently push the
material with your hand.
Observe how far it moved. Measure the distance that it
travelled using a
meter stick or ruler or tape measure.
4.Using the same material, repeat step 3, but this time,
push
the material with a stronger force. Observe how far it
travelled. Measure the
distance it covered in meters.
5. Repeat step 3 using the sane material, this time push it
with the strongest force.
6. Record your observation in the data table

Guide Questions:
1. How do you compare the distance travelled by the object
when you pushed it with a weak/gentle, strong and
strongest?
2. Which amount of force applied made the materials travelled
the farthest from the starting point. Nearest the starting
point?
3. What factors do you think affected the movement of the
materials?
ACTIVITY 3. Explain what change takes place when the
following actions are done.
1. cutting of trees
2. Pounding of garlic
3. slicing a cake
4. tearing a piece of paper
5. pushing a grocery cart
ACTIVITY 4. Study the picture below.
1. Explain what will happen to the can when hammered

Learning Competency with Code Explain the effects of force when applied to an object (S4FE-llla-1) II. Background Information for Learners What is a Force? Your everyday life involves numerous task such as cleaning the house, washing the dishes or playing. All these activities include several movements that need you to push or pull objects that may react differently. These activities can set objects in motion, shift its direction, change its shape or put an object back into a resting position. The movement of push and pull applied is called force. Force can change the size and shape of an object An object may change its size and shape when force is applied on it. A paper may change its size and shape when you tear, cut, or even crumple it. When you accidentally drop the flowerpot made of clay while you are transferring your plants, it may also change its size and shape. There are so many ways that you can do to change the size and shape of certain object. Some ways include pushing, compressing, bending, stretching, chopping, and squeezing. Force can make a stationary object move or make moving objects move faster A stationary ball on the floor will move by giving it a small push through kicking it. You can make it move faster by applying a push in the direction to where it is moving. Therefore, a force can make a stationary object move, and it can also make a moving object move faster. Force can slow down or completely stop a moving object A stationary ball on the floor can be made to stop by applying a force. In order to stop or slow down a moving body, there is a
  • 4. need to apply a force in a direction opposite to the direction of motion of the moving body. Force can change the direction of moving object In a basketball game, the players can change the direction of the ball by blocking it. With these examples, force changes the direction of a moving object. The player uses force to make the ball move. The player is blocking the ball to stop any pass or shoot made by the other player. The girl is applying force by pushing the grocery cart to make it move. Accompanying DepEd Textbook and Educational Sites Department of Education. (2015). • 5. Activity Proper Activity 1. “How does force affect the size and shape of an object?” What you need: sponge pencil bottle cap garlic wire egg shell onion hammer bar soap scissors plastic bottle knife cup sharpener What to do: 1. Prepare the materials needed for the activity. 2. Think of what you can do to change the size and shape of each material. 3. Perform the action that you have thought for each of the material. Be careful in doing the activity. Ask the help of your parents or older family members to make sure that you will not hurt yourself or others. 4. Record the actions done and the effects of force applied on each material in the data table. 5. Return all the materials used and clean your working area after finishing the activity. • 7. ACTIVITY 2. “How does force affect the movement of an object?” Directions: Perform the activity by following the given steps below. Ask the help of your parents or adult family members while doing the activity. Record your observations in the data table below. Activity Title: Push and Go Materials: meter stick/ruler/tape measure, any available material at home. Procedures: 1. Look for a toy car, ball, book, plastic chair/table, and trolley bag. 2. Choose only 1 material and place it on flat surface of the floor. 3. Mark a starting point on the floor. Gently push the material with your hand. Observe how far it moved. Measure the distance that it travelled using a meter stick or ruler or tape measure. 4.Using the same material, repeat step 3, but this time, push the material with a stronger force. Observe how far it travelled. Measure the distance it covered in meters. 5. Repeat step 3 using the sane material, this time push it with the strongest force. 6. Record your observation in the data table Materials Type of force Applied (weak, strong , strongest) Distance Covered in meters 1 2 3
  • 8. _ _ _ Guide Questions: 1. How do you compare the distance travelled by the object when you pushed it with a weak/gentle, strong and strongest? 2. Which amount of force applied made the materials travelled the farthest from the starting point. Nearest the starting point? 3. What factors do you think affected the movement of the materials? ACTIVITY 3. Explain what change takes place when the following actions are done. 1. cutting of trees 2. Pounding of garlic 3. slicing a cake 4. tearing a piece of paper 5. pushing a grocery cart ACTIVITY 4. Study the picture below. 1. Explain what will happen to the can when hammered
