Language Barriers Holding Back Healthcare And Business
Language Barriers Holding Back Healthcare and Business
Uniquely put by Christopher Dawson, a British scholar, "the greatest obstacle to international
understanding is the language barrier." Essentially, Dawson speaks about the great lengths some
people have to go through to understand another's culture, and a lot of the time they fail. Inspired by
the stimulus material, "Vanishing Voices," I delved into the limitations language barriers put on
society and how to solve them. I found these limitations are reflected in business, education, and
cultural expansion. In essence, Future business deals, economic downturns, the health of foreigners
and education for future generations are at risk without the mass integration of a universal language.
Language barriers are what cause a great deal of risk in the business place and for foreign travelers
and tourists. Ensuring a more successful and safe future for generations to come, involves the
identification of issues caused by language barriers resulting in an absence of an effective health
care system, economic downturns involving business deals that failed, and a lack of a proper
education system for those who do not speak the major languages spoken by the majority of the
world, English, Mandarin, French, or Spanish. To be blunt, the health system is one of the most
intricate and complicated systems in the world with thousands of terms for numerous symptoms,
treatments, and situations that may arise, and not your average United

One of the features that distinguish humans from other species is the fact that we use language as a
means of communication. It belongs to the Semitic Language family; hence its grammar is very
different from English. And Arabic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This further makes learning Arabic more difficult. There are some words that we use them in
English are borrowed from the Arabic language, like the word '‫'جبر‬ which is Algebra in English.
However English speakers borrowed the word alcohol from the word '‫'كهل‬ which refers to the dark
eye–shadow.
There are a lot of differences between Arabic and English Language, according to the vowels,
Arabic has 28 consonants while English has 24 consonants. Short vowels are unimportant in Arabic,
and indeed do not appear in writing. However English has about three times as many vowel sounds
as Arabic, so it is inevitable that beginning learners will fail to distinguish between some of the
words they heat, such as shipsheep or badbed, and will have difficulties saying such words
correctly. The English vowel system presents major problems for Arab learners of English both in

The Importance Of Learning English
Learn Your English In todays world, English and the use of English is rapidly changing. It's slowly
becoming a more universal language due to the diversity of people in many different countries.
Having a shared language would ensure all American citizens can communicate with one another
and prevent groups from becoming isolated and separated from one another. With the help of two
essays "The New Technologies in the World" written by Dennis Baron and "So Here's What's
Happening to English" written by Jack Rosenthal, you'll soon then understand how English is
changing right beneath your feet. English should be the medium of instruction at universities and
everyone should learn English in the United States for the following three reasons: ... Show more

If you're going to read about technology, you'll probably have to do it in English. Another reason
why English should be known is by being able to communicate with others. The importance of
English is becoming much more known in result to that it's widely introduced in majority of high
schools and colleges. But on another note such as speaking internationally, it would be very
beneficial to learn english, not only will your opportunities expand, but the knowledge you can gain
from it is unmatched. Baron introduces this topic by saying, "When it comes to globalization, the
first language that comes to mind is of English," which gets you thinking, you don't think of any
other language first when it comes to language of the world. To create a world of ethical
responsibility, English language plays a key role. Most works of art and popular culture are more
honestly represented in their origin of language, such as a song, novel, or even a movie. Without this
common language, nothing would be able to function smoothly. Similarly, it is also very important
to maintain peace and harmony among people. If you raise an issue, only through peaceful talks and
conferences, they can be discussed and solved problems. English is best to make this easier. It
makes business run much more smoothly as well. If everyone at a company speaks English and you
have a handful that don't, communication will be much more tough and will likely put things out of

Ambiguity And Balance Between Language And Power
Ambiguity and Balance between Language and Power: A Study
Of Legal Discourse in International Instruments

1. Introduction:
With the increasing number of international bodies, institutions and accords, the need for legal
discourse with its molds and fixed–like characteristics grows, especially in drafting international
documents. Legal translation is considerably distinct from other fields. Drawing on Harvey, Cao
(2007) maintains that legal translators, particularly those engaged in translating international
instruments, are required to possess certain prerequisites that enable them to combine the free
literary style with the very meticulous approach of technical translation, while putting into
consideration the archetypes and limitations imposed over methodologies of translation due to the
restricting nature of law. (p. 3) These features, accordingly, have to be met with an appropriate
equivalent that preserves the core of law while translating into another language concerning lexical
items and complex grammatical structures.
In the international and political arena, there arises the dichotomy of achieving balance between the
core of law, clarity, and the vagueness of language. Dall'Omo (2012) maintains that far–reaching
compromises are often processed through a relatively vague language in drafting them, given the
fact that they are negotiated for

The Advantages Of Debate
Nowadays, English is important for everyone, English had been taught in every school, starting
from elementary school until the University level. English has become the global language and the
primary method of communication for the people of the world in fact it is now common for English
to be referred to as International or even Global English. English learning is very important for the
students, because if they can mastery English it means they have been use English in orally and in
written form. Speaking is one of the basic skill in English. According to Clark (1977:233) speaking

Newspaper Style
Introduction
A newspaper headline is often the only thing that readers read in a newspaper, or at least, it is the
first thing that everyone notices in a newspaper. It serves as a indicator for the reader that helps
decide whether to continue on reading the whole text or to skip it onto another one. Each headline
should be a summary of the news which follows. A headline should be a regular sentence structure
containing a subject and a verb. It means that only lexical, not grammatical words are used. The
major reason for that is the space. Then the rule of a sentence may be broken, only minor sentences
are used, and such a headline can be rather difficult to understand. This happens on purpose to make
the headline somehow special with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Articles and the verb "to be" in various functions are often left out. * LAS VEGAS A POTENTIAL

Sometimes the Present Continuous is used (usually to denote something that is changing or
developing), but the auxiliary verb is usually left out. * MAYOR ELECTION SPENDING SOARS
* SOUTH AFRICA RUNNING DRY * OUTBREAK OF FOOG POISONING HITS KYIV
To refer to the future, headlines often use the infinitive. * DENMARK TO VOTE * GIULIANI TO

The Ideal Education Of My Mind
The ideal education in my mind is to help an individual to have complete ego, personality and
aspiration. The ultimate goal is to bring up a man who can think independently, have an ideality, and
is valuable to the society. He or she also should be able to keep optimistic when confronting
dilemma or frustration, then seek assistance by correct thinking way. Korina Tang, who is a friend of
my mother's, is now working as an English teacher and head teacher in a primary school located in
Nanjing, China. I interviewed her online via Skype to know more about how she designs an English
curriculum for her students, and it also teaches me how important a teacher is in a student's life and
what kind of responsibility they are having. After the interview, my respect towards primary school
teachers escalates gradually.
Among all the questions I asked, the first is the one I am the most interested in: I wonder how she
evaluates her curriculum and what is the most important part in her teaching. After much
deliberation, she told me it is "passion". Not only the teachers need to have passion in their
repetitive teaching year by year, but they also need to light up the passion in their students in
English studying. Last year, the new policy came out that English will not be one of the compulsory
courses in future College Entrance Examinations, which makes lots of students and their parents
start to transfer their consideration in English to other courses. This had made English teaching

Natural language processing: Natural language is the embodiment of human cognition and human
intelligence. Natural language processing (NLP) is a cross disciplinary field in computer science and
linguistics where a computer can generate and understand human speech. It is the ability of a
computer program to understand human speech as it is spoken. NLP is a component of artificial
intelligence (AI).The development of NLP applications is challenging because computers

Quenya: A Non-real Language Invented by J.R.R. Tolkien
Language plays a big role in our life. We use it to gain and give back knowledge. Most people learn
a language at infant–toddler age so they can communicate with the world. We claim we know
something because we read it or someone has told us about it, therefore we can see how much of a
powerful tool language is. There are so many different languages in this world that we speak but
learned it because we were taught by elders at a young age. Then there are bilingual people that
learn a whole different language after their mother tongue language. How about invented languages?
There are many manmade languages such as Solresol, Toki Pona, Enochian and so many more.
(http://www.toptenz.net/top–10–invented–languages.php) Quenya stands out to me the most. In this
essay I will be speaking about the history, development and use of the Quenya language.
Quenya is non–real language made by J.R.R Tolkien. He began devising the language around the
year 1910 and changed around a lot of the structure until it reached the final stage. The vocabulary
was mostly not changed that much but the name has been changed quite a bit of times before it was
called Quenya. It was changed from Elfin to Qenya to it finally being called Quenya by J.R.R
Tolkien. A lot of words in Quenya came from The Finnish language but also familiar with Latin,
Greek and ancient Germanic languages. Tolkien made up a fictional world language which is called
Middle–earth. It is the fictional universe setting of the

The Literacy / Education Narrative
Rebecca Berger Megargee English 103 10.Feb.2016 The Literacy/Education Narrative Everybody
has a moment that puts their life into perspective; a moment where everything just clicks, but
sometimes that moment can open up more questions than answers. A person's life can depend a lot
on their surroundings, but regardless of the circumstances they're in, it is up to them to decide how it
will affect them. One event could affect each person differently in such a way that there is an
indeterminate amount of possibilities in one person's life, and they will have to be the ones to take it
upon themselves to decide. My moment made me decide to learn new languages, to learn about
cultures, to communicate. I wanted to live in a world where there would be no hassle in traveling, no
language barriers, and no discrimination. It was my first day as a senior in high school, I went to the
guidance councilor to have my schedule fixed, I had no clue what "business intern" was. As I sat
waiting I thought of other classes I wanted to swap, or questions I could ask about college
applications. The air was cold, stagnant, and smelled like a cinnamon holiday candle. The smell
burned my nose and I became the most impatient person in the room. There she was, walking down
the hall shuffling through papers, the sound alone made me more nervous than a presentation. "Mrs.
Keeler" I said, probably surprising her – usually students aren't there to change schedules until the
end of the week – "Can I

Personal Narrative: My Application To The Coast Guard Academy
I have been accepted to AFS–USA's international exchange program to Norway. I will be spending
my sophomore year living with a host family and going to school at a local upper secondary school.
I am awaiting the information regarding where I will be located in Norway, as well as my paperwork

August and return the following July.
How would this experience affect my application to the Coast Guard Academy my senior year? I
should be taking the same classes that I would have been taking in the U.S., with the addition of
both Norwegian and German language courses. Sports, I have been told, are usually not a part of the

Impact Of Globalization Of English Language
Globalization of the English language is the concept of using English as a global language for
purpose of communication in numerous different dialects that is the movement of English towards a
standard language. From history we see that twenty first century is known as the period of
globalization of English language in which English has gained so much importance that it is now

though its usage in the lower class society is very little but still people want to learn it for better
opportunities. It has overtaken the world as the global language. Everyone irrespective of the fact
where he belongs to speak English though not fluent as well as understands it very well. Education
in most of the countries is given in English as it is the language of researches and technology. It is
the major language of newspapers, academic conferences, diplomacy, sports and advertisement
industry. Multinational companies requires their workers to be fluent in English language because
they deal with their foreign business partners and customers in English language as it's understood

competitive globally, efficient, locally reactive, versatile and responsive within a moment's notice,
and proficiency in exchanging information and knowledge over extensively scattered units. These
necessities are momentous, and the extent of the reality is undeniable: for instance, a significant

2.0 Difference in Approach
The significant distinction between personnel management versus human resource management is
that while personnel management is the customary methodology comparatively human resource
management uses a contemporary approach in dealing with people within an organisation.
Personnel management is a dominantly managerial record–keeping function that intends to secure
and preserve impartial terms and conditions of the occupation. Human resource management
coordinates the conventional personnel management functions to corporate objectives and strategies,
and performs additional individuals focused formative activities.
The personal management approach has a tendency to append much significance to standards,
traditions and established practices; moreover the human resource methodology offers significance
to values and mission. The personal management approach revolves around forging standards,
arrangements, policies, contracts, and strives to uphold compliance to such regulations, with
watchful depiction of a written contract. The human resource methodology stays fretful with the
tenets and regulations. HR managers have a

Doctors and nurses may also use medical terminology when discussing something in front of a
patient in order to prevent undue anxiety. Medical "jargon" is not at all meant to speak in pig latin in
front of a patient. It is so that there is no mistake when doctors are conveying information about a
patient to each other. For example, to a lay person, "fever" may mean that the person feels hot, or
that the temperature is above 100 Fahrenheit. But no one really knows and can cause a lot of
confusion. With medical terms, things are very clear, so that even a surgeon in France can read a
scientific journal article and know exactly what the author means. That way, also, medicine can be
global and that the medical societies can share ideas and innovations. Since everything in a patient's
medical records must be documented, from signs and symptoms, to the patient's medical history, to
the final diagnosis and treatment, it saves the doctors and all other medical personnel a considerable
amount of time to use a universally accepted form of medical terminology. And, even more
importantly to use medical terminology, means it will be safer when all medical professionals, from
doctors and nurses, lab techs to radiology techs, etc. use the same universal medical terminology so
they don't have to try to guess what was ordered or charted on the patient's medical records or what
procedure a patient needs.

The Link Between The Term Pidgins Essay
SOCIOLIANGUISTICS
‫الرحيم‬ ‫الرحمن‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫بسم‬
PIDGINS IN SUDIAARABIA Pidgin could be defined as a language that results from two different
people who are not able to speak a each other language so they can interact with and understand
each other.
This is situation can be a result of different circumstances like war, colonization, slavery and
international trade.
Some definitions of pidgins although are pidgins have no static definitions : Ferguson (1971) refers
to pidgins and creoles as simplified speech used to communicate with people who are considered
unable to understand normal speech, such as babies or foreigners. One of the essential points that
should be clarified in this context is the link between the term pidgins. This linguistic variety is used
in the contact between two speech communities from two different linguistic backgrounds (Al–
Azraqi 2010; Al–Moaily, 2008).Bresnan and Roberts (2008:272) state that pidgins 'develop as
auxiliary languages and thus lack native communities, at least initially'.
Although the contact is between two languages, the vocabulary of a pidgin comes particularly from
one dominant language called the 'lexifier' or 'superstrate', while the non–dominant language is
called the substrate (Al–Moaily, 2008; Bizri, 2009; Al–Azraqi, 2010). Pidgins also do not have a
stable grammatical structure and they are usually used specifically among adults for a short period
of time (Al–Azraqi, 2010). However creoles are classified as more

Besides in relationships, there is another place where communication is key... Not in DJ Khaled's

When salespeople and customers cannot communicate with each other, it leads to frustration on both

Analyzing The Elements And Strategies Of Communication
The only way to truly learn is to make mistakes. After reviewing and reading the elements and
strategies of communication it was very clear, the only way to get better is to break through the
barriers that typically create misunderstanding in communication. The six barriers we focused on
were cliche, jargon, slang, sexist/racist language, euphemisms, and doublespeak. Although these are
called barriers, I like to think of them as a lesson learned.
The first barrier I have experienced is cliche. The cliche is an overused unoriginal phrase or word
that at one point was clever (McClean, 2010). From my experience, I have learned that ageism
really impacts what a cliche truly is. What was cool to say yesterday is not cool to say today. I
haven't said a cliche myself, but I have witnessed one. As an educator, my principal was meeting
with a student about their bad attitude. She was trying to figure out what the antecedent was. She
was asking the student personal questions and then said, "I am not trying to get up in your wax." The
mother of the student, the student, and myself all seemed taken aback and asked for clarification.
My principal clarified and said that she use to say wax when she was younger. It's an abbreviation of
the word beeswax.
Jargon is using language that is not accessible (McClean, 2010). I use to work for a postal service in
my town and we would always use acronyms such as "ETA." ETA is an acronym for estimated time
of arrival. We used it so often that it

Habermas and Bourdieu for World Peace
The idea of world peace implies there is a common understanding between diverse nations and
cultures. Theories or perspectives concerning problems of peace and development, if understood
dialectically, can shed light upon the conditions that regulate the use of language. Bourdieu's
conditions refer to the relations of power, whereas Habermas' conditions refer to relations of reason.
The implementation of a politically neutral language affords the opportunity for every sovereign
individual to participate within the public realm for rational discourse to take place. Both Bourdieu
and Habermas' theories identify the hurdles of equitable discourse. World peace implies a
"neutrality" of speech void of language games and communication anchored in widespread
participation. In Bourdieu's words, "The use of language...depends on the social position of the
speaker;" and in effect, the authority of language "comes to language from outside." The "outside" is
created from social conditions fraught with language games. Bourdieu argues that speaking is
inseparable from the distribution of power in a society, and the distribution power in society is
unequal. Hence, there is difficulty for neutrality. The analysis of language games involves an
awareness of social classes and the relative social position of speakers. The institutionalized social
relations of speaking establish who is authorized to speak and recognized as such by others.
Bourdieu goes on to identify an inverse relation

Globalization Of The English Language
Globalization of the English Language It is everywhere. About 380 million speak it as their first
language and perhaps two–thirds as many as their second. A billion are learning it, a third of the
world's population are in some sense exposed to it and by 2050, it is predicted, half the world will be
more or less proficient at it. It is the language of globalization – English. Though defining
globalization is a contested and divisive issue, according to the "Arab World English Journal,"
"Globalization can create a world without boundaries in which people of this world can
communicate with each other, interact and share their cultures, economies, and generally their lives
via development in the fields of information technologies, communications, and transportations"
(Alfehaid 104). Cultures have mixed and economies have become interdependent. Berube's article,
"From Mapping the Bilingual Brain," exposed the connection between higher IQ levels and
knowing more than one language; this investigation ignited a spark of curiosity, one which allowed
me to observe the decrease in the memorization of foreign/native languages and the increase and
dependence on English in the global community today. This overall aided in developing an
extensive research question: In what ways has the globalization of the English language worldwide
impacted society? Through exploratory research, the views of English language globalization is
widely debatable; although a majority of linguists and

and it's international ones are mutually constitutive. It is apparent that the issue of internal security
was crucial and impacted France's status in the international arena. From 1624–8, Richelieu's
foreign policy was jeopardized by national concerns: the revolt of the Huguenots and
inconveniences resulting from those who directly opposed him within France, specifically the

The Purposes Of The United Nations Essay
The Purposes of the United nations are:
1. To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures
for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression
or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the
principles of justice and internal law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations
which might lead to a breach of the peace;
2. To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and
self determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace;
3. To achieve international cooperation in solving internal problems of an economic, social, cultural,
or humanitarian character and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for
fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion (Charter, 1).
On June 25, 1945 the United Nations Charter was signed, setting the framework for economic,
social and political reform (Patterson, UN, 20) By October 24, 1945,
the United Nations had become an official organization. Two months later, by December 27, the UN
Charter had 51 signatures, making it a new world power with the ultimate aim for peace and
humanitarian efforts. The preamble to the Charter of the United Nations states:

The United Nations Essay
The United Nations
The United Nations, with its rigid moral and political limitations against force, has become a
benchmark of peace and a social achievement of modern times. From war torn Europe, the United
Nations developed from five major powers with an initial goal to prevent the spread of warfare
through peaceful means and to establish and maintain fundamental human rights. Through the past
fifty years, this organization has broadened its horizons with auxiliary organizations from peace
keeping missions to humanitarian aid, to economic development. However, in a modern example of
ethnic cleansing, the UN faces new a new role as a bystander as its power is bypassed by NATO
forces. The UN, however, promises to be an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the League, once secure used its representatives' power and presence as a threat, but did
not follow through with such threats when major opposition arose. For example, in the 1930s, the
League of Nations "possessed neither the will nor the means to stop them [fascist dictators in Italy,
Germany, and Japan]" (Patterson, UN, 14). Although this organization did little to prevent the
Second World War in 1939, it did pave the way for humanitarian aid efforts to refugees and helped
to resolve a number of border disputes before the war. Following the second of the World Wars, the
League of Nations was replaced by the modern United Nations. This organization's aims were
similar to their predecessor's, to maintain harmony through settling border disputes and to offer
humanitarian aid wherever necessary, but the UN's charter states further that tolerance and equality
is necessary in peace: The Purposes of the United nations are: 1. To maintain international peace and
security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of

or we can call the whole deal off. Government owes us the services of good teachers, especially
language mentors." The researcher, in her seven years of teaching the English language , is saddened
by the students' lack of confidence in communicating in English. Many students prefer to keep quiet
in class for fear that when they speak, they might commit errors in grammar pronunciation, and that
their classmates might laugh at them. This is alarming most especially when a student is in an Oral
Communication class and the whole quarter slips away without a word from a very shy student.
With these, the researcher was motivated to assess the level of English proficiency of the grade 7
students at Payapa National High School which she believes would be a great basis on designing an
action plan in order to further enhance the English proficiency among students. Conceptual

information within a company has to be effective, clear, and easy to understand to be successful. A
good communicator has several reasonsfor being good. Ranging from knowing the information they

February as the International Mother Language Day, it has transcended the national borders of
Bangladesh and acquired an international significance and a global dimension.
International Mother Language Day is particularly significant in the sense that it has a cultural
importance. From now on, 21st February – so long observed in Bangladesh as the Bangla Language
Martyrs' Day – will be observed here simultaneously as the Bangla Language Martyrs' Day and the
International Mother Language Day. And in nearly 200 countries of the world, various peoples
speaking various languages and belonging to various national cultures will observe 21st February as
the International Mother Language Day. They will naturally celebrate their own mother languages,
but while doing so, it is more than likely that they will refer to Bangladesh and the Language

The declaration made by the UNESCO in November 1999 designating 21st February as the

The Word Ain 't Essay
The word ain't is one of the most commonly–overlooked mistake in the English dictionary. It is used
very often in TV, books, movies, media, and music, so we shouldn't be surprised it is now in our real
life. Even though our English teachers and grammar textbooks label the word ain't as incorrect the
use of the word has not been banished and we have no idea if it ever will be. Since, it continues to
be in our language, and we often us it we should be informed of its origin and its development.
However, there are different opinions on the development. Most writers on this issue seems to agree
that the word ain't has not been fully investigated and needs further research. A look at the history of
ain't can help determine how this simple contraction became a serious error in professional writing
and speech. One writer on the topic, Ignacio M. Palacios Martinez is a member of the Department of
English and German at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. That is also where he
graduated with an English major. Then he taught in the Department of Modern Languages at the
University of Lincoln. He has published and edited several books and has contributed quite a few
articles in various national and international specialized journals. He often works together with the
Spanish Ministry of Education, local education authorities and institutions, such as the British
Council and the Instituto Cervantes in teacher–training activities. The word ain't has partially been
investigated.

The Intentional Causes And Unintentional Effects Of Language
The Intentional Causes and Unintentional Effects of Language
Language is an overlooked topic that not many people address, seeing that it has affected most of us
in oblivious ways. Our languages have created standards, barriers, principles, concepts and
misconceptions that have molded us to become societies living under differences that have become
naturally accepted. The many ways that language has affected us have come from our own personal
backgrounds as well as deriving from socially accepted standards that have been set over time. The
different ways language has structured us become evident in regards to religion, culture, ethnicity,
consciousness and gender. In this, problems have arised that are mostly ignored and disregarded
even with solutions presented.
Regarding to our consciousness, language has structured it based upon what we learned from our
surroundings and what has become known as the "norm". The way we articulate our thoughts comes
from what we already know from our language. Language has passed on ideas that we think we
articulate ourselves. The way we formulate sentences or think about other things have all been an
impact by language. So technically, our thoughts are not our own since they originate from what
language has done. The current way I am choosing to write this very essay is a result from what I
have learned from my language. I know what is acceptable and unacceptable in writing this. This
can be said to be a result of knowing grammar rules and

some countries use english as a second language and the number of students who are going abroad
to study english continues to increase. Linguists debate whether English use is essential and
worthwhile. Of course, at this time, English is dominant economically, culturally, and
technologically, but it should be considered whether it is sustainable. Some experts and authors
claim that English will dominate in the future, but there are many factors that suggest the decline of
English.
The Statistic shows that about 1,500 million people in the world use English , but only 375 million
of them use english as their first lagnuage ("statista"), which means there are more people who
speak english as a second language rather than their native languge. Furthermore, some of the
countries that use English as a second language have recently enacted a law prohibiting or limiting
English to protect their own language. According to Globalization101, there are policies in France
that restrict words such as Walkman, talk shows, and hashtags and replace them with French

English As A Foreign Language
English is addressed globally as the language of science, technology, business, and mediation. It is a
primary language of mass entertainment and news reporting and the default language of the internet
(Crystal 2004). The most popular characterization of the different roles of English around the world
is the (ENL) English as a Native Language, the ESL English as a Second Language and (EFL),
English as a Foreign Language, as described in 1998, MacArthur. The ENL approach is how most
people in the United States are taught once they begin formal schooling.
Materials and teaching strategies are based on the linguistic structures, literary genres, and cultural
references normally acquired by monolingual speakers of English. ESL and EFL are categories that
apply to non–native learners. Generally, in ESL students, only English is utilized in the classroom.
Teachers are usually native or near–native speakers of English and are rarely proficient in any of the
languages of their students. Typically, the vocabulary and linguistic routines of daily life are taught
with the goal of accelerating the cultural adjustment to the new setting.
At the college level, foreign students are prepared to compete in English–speaking academic
environments. In the U.S. for example, ESL classes increase in the elementary and secondary
schools, universities, and some job sites. An EFL approach is utilized primarily in places where
students do not usually have an opportunity to employ English daily.

Language Barriers Holding Back Healthcare And Business

  • 1. Language Barriers Holding Back Healthcare And Business Language Barriers Holding Back Healthcare and Business Uniquely put by Christopher Dawson, a British scholar, "the greatest obstacle to international understanding is the language barrier." Essentially, Dawson speaks about the great lengths some people have to go through to understand another's culture, and a lot of the time they fail. Inspired by the stimulus material, "Vanishing Voices," I delved into the limitations language barriers put on society and how to solve them. I found these limitations are reflected in business, education, and cultural expansion. In essence, Future business deals, economic downturns, the health of foreigners and education for future generations are at risk without the mass integration of a universal language. Language barriers are what cause a great deal of risk in the business place and for foreign travelers and tourists. Ensuring a more successful and safe future for generations to come, involves the identification of issues caused by language barriers resulting in an absence of an effective health care system, economic downturns involving business deals that failed, and a lack of a proper education system for those who do not speak the major languages spoken by the majority of the world, English, Mandarin, French, or Spanish. To be blunt, the health system is one of the most intricate and complicated systems in the world with thousands of terms for numerous symptoms, treatments, and situations that may arise, and not your average United ... • 4. Arabic has 28 consonants while English has 24 consonants. Short vowels are unimportant in Arabic, and indeed do not appear in writing. However English has about three times as many vowel sounds as Arabic, so it is inevitable that beginning learners will fail to distinguish between some of the words they heat, such as shipsheep or badbed, and will have difficulties saying such words correctly. • 6. The Importance Of Learning English Learn Your English In todays world, English and the use of English is rapidly changing. It's slowly becoming a more universal language due to the diversity of people in many different countries. Having a shared language would ensure all American citizens can communicate with one another and prevent groups from becoming isolated and separated from one another. With the help of two essays "The New Technologies in the World" written by Dennis Baron and "So Here's What's Happening to English" written by Jack Rosenthal, you'll soon then understand how English is changing right beneath your feet. English should be the medium of instruction at universities and everyone should learn English in the United States for the following three reasons: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you're going to read about technology, you'll probably have to do it in English. Another reason why English should be known is by being able to communicate with others. The importance of English is becoming much more known in result to that it's widely introduced in majority of high schools and colleges. But on another note such as speaking internationally, it would be very beneficial to learn english, not only will your opportunities expand, but the knowledge you can gain from it is unmatched. Baron introduces this topic by saying, "When it comes to globalization, the first language that comes to mind is of English," which gets you thinking, you don't think of any other language first when it comes to language of the world. To create a world of ethical responsibility, English language plays a key role. Most works of art and popular culture are more honestly represented in their origin of language, such as a song, novel, or even a movie. Without this common language, nothing would be able to function smoothly. Similarly, it is also very important to maintain peace and harmony among people. If you raise an issue, only through peaceful talks and conferences, they can be discussed and solved problems. English is best to make this easier. It makes business run much more smoothly as well. If everyone at a company speaks English and you have a handful that don't, communication will be much more tough and will likely put things out of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Ambiguity And Balance Between Language And Power Ambiguity and Balance between Language and Power: A Study Of Legal Discourse in International Instruments Muhammad Gamal Abdullah Ain–Shams University Al–Alsun Faculty Supervisor: Prof. Asmaa Amin Theoretical Part 1. Introduction: With the increasing number of international bodies, institutions and accords, the need for legal discourse with its molds and fixed–like characteristics grows, especially in drafting international documents. Legal translation is considerably distinct from other fields. Drawing on Harvey, Cao (2007) maintains that legal translators, particularly those engaged in translating international instruments, are required to possess certain prerequisites that enable them to combine the free literary style with the very meticulous approach of technical translation, while putting into consideration the archetypes and limitations imposed over methodologies of translation due to the restricting nature of law. (p. 3) These features, accordingly, have to be met with an appropriate equivalent that preserves the core of law while translating into another language concerning lexical items and complex grammatical structures. In the international and political arena, there arises the dichotomy of achieving balance between the core of law, clarity, and the vagueness of language. Dall'Omo (2012) maintains that far–reaching compromises are often processed through a relatively vague language in drafting them, given the fact that they are negotiated for ... It serves as a indicator for the reader that helps decide whether to continue on reading the whole text or to skip it onto another one. Each headline should be a summary of the news which follows. A headline should be a regular sentence structure containing a subject and a verb. It means that only lexical, not grammatical words are used. The major reason for that is the space. Korina Tang, who is a friend of my mother's, is now working as an English teacher and head teacher in a primary school located in Nanjing, China. I interviewed her online via Skype to know more about how she designs an English curriculum for her students, and it also teaches me how important a teacher is in a student's life and what kind of responsibility they are having. After the interview, my respect towards primary school teachers escalates gradually. Among all the questions I asked, the first is the one I am the most interested in: I wonder how she evaluates her curriculum and what is the most important part in her teaching. After much deliberation, she told me it is "passion". Not only the teachers need to have passion in their repetitive teaching year by year, but they also need to light up the passion in their students in English studying. Last year, the new policy came out that English will not be one of the compulsory courses in future College Entrance Examinations, which makes lots of students and their parents start to transfer their consideration in English to other courses. • 20. Quenya: A Non-real Language Invented by J.R.R. Tolkien Language plays a big role in our life. We use it to gain and give back knowledge. Most people learn a language at infant–toddler age so they can communicate with the world. We claim we know something because we read it or someone has told us about it, therefore we can see how much of a powerful tool language is. There are so many different languages in this world that we speak but learned it because we were taught by elders at a young age. Then there are bilingual people that learn a whole different language after their mother tongue language. How about invented languages? There are many manmade languages such as Solresol, Toki Pona, Enochian and so many more. (http://www.toptenz.net/top–10–invented–languages.php) Quenya stands out to me the most. In this essay I will be speaking about the history, development and use of the Quenya language. Quenya is non–real language made by J.R.R Tolkien. He began devising the language around the year 1910 and changed around a lot of the structure until it reached the final stage. The vocabulary was mostly not changed that much but the name has been changed quite a bit of times before it was called Quenya. It was changed from Elfin to Qenya to it finally being called Quenya by J.R.R Tolkien. A lot of words in Quenya came from The Finnish language but also familiar with Latin, Greek and ancient Germanic languages. Tolkien made up a fictional world language which is called Middle–earth. • 22. The Literacy / Education Narrative Rebecca Berger Megargee English 103 10.Feb.2016 The Literacy/Education Narrative Everybody has a moment that puts their life into perspective; a moment where everything just clicks, but sometimes that moment can open up more questions than answers. A person's life can depend a lot on their surroundings, but regardless of the circumstances they're in, it is up to them to decide how it will affect them. One event could affect each person differently in such a way that there is an indeterminate amount of possibilities in one person's life, and they will have to be the ones to take it upon themselves to decide. My moment made me decide to learn new languages, to learn about cultures, to communicate. I wanted to live in a world where there would be no hassle in traveling, no language barriers, and no discrimination. It was my first day as a senior in high school, I went to the guidance councilor to have my schedule fixed, I had no clue what "business intern" was. As I sat waiting I thought of other classes I wanted to swap, or questions I could ask about college applications. The air was cold, stagnant, and smelled like a cinnamon holiday candle. The smell burned my nose and I became the most impatient person in the room. There she was, walking down the hall shuffling through papers, the sound alone made me more nervous than a presentation. "Mrs. Keeler" I said, probably surprising her – usually students aren't there to change schedules until the end of the week – "Can I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

International Human Resource Management (IHRM) is about the global management of human assets (e.g. Adler and Ghadar 1990; Brewster 2002). The motivation behind IHRM is to empower the firm, the Multinational Enterprise (MNE), to be globally prosperous. This necessitates being competitive globally, efficient, locally reactive, versatile and responsive within a moment's notice, and proficiency in exchanging information and knowledge over extensively scattered units. Now as we move into the future, English has and still will be used as an international language. Why is it considered so? Also how did this come about? It is also used by professionals who are at work each day, on travel, or work– related matters. Medical "jargon" is not at all meant to speak in pig latin in front of a patient. It is so that there is no mistake when doctors are conveying information about a patient to each other. For example, to a lay person, "fever" may mean that the person feels hot, or that the temperature is above 100 Fahrenheit. But no one really knows and can cause a lot of confusion. With medical terms, things are very clear, so that even a surgeon in France can read a scientific journal article and know exactly what the author means. That way, also, medicine can be global and that the medical societies can share ideas and innovations. Since everything in a patient's medical records must be documented, from signs and symptoms, to the patient's medical history, to the final diagnosis and treatment, it saves the doctors and all other medical personnel a considerable amount of time to use a universally accepted form of medical terminology. And, even more importantly to use medical terminology, means it will be safer when all medical professionals, from doctors and nurses, lab techs to radiology techs, etc. use the same universal medical terminology so they don't have to try to guess what was ordered or charted on the patient's medical records or what procedure a patient needs. The Link Between The Term Pidgins Essay SOCIOLIANGUISTICS ‫الرحيم‬ ‫الرحمن‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫بسم‬ PIDGINS IN SUDIAARABIA Pidgin could be defined as a language that results from two different people who are not able to speak a each other language so they can interact with and understand each other. This is situation can be a result of different circumstances like war, colonization, slavery and international trade. Some definitions of pidgins although are pidgins have no static definitions : Ferguson (1971) refers to pidgins and creoles as simplified speech used to communicate with people who are considered unable to understand normal speech, such as babies or foreigners. One of the essential points that should be clarified in this context is the link between the term pidgins. This linguistic variety is used in the contact between two speech communities from two different linguistic backgrounds (Al– Azraqi 2010; Al–Moaily, 2008).Bresnan and Roberts (2008:272) state that pidgins 'develop as auxiliary languages and thus lack native communities, at least initially'. Although the contact is between two languages, the vocabulary of a pidgin comes particularly from one dominant language called the 'lexifier' or 'superstrate', while the non–dominant language is called the substrate (Al–Moaily, 2008; Bizri, 2009; Al–Azraqi, 2010). Pidgins also do not have a stable grammatical structure and they are usually used specifically among adults for a short period of time (Al–Azraqi, 2010). However creoles are classified as more ... After reviewing and reading the elements and strategies of communication it was very clear, the only way to get better is to break through the barriers that typically create misunderstanding in communication. The six barriers we focused on were cliche, jargon, slang, sexist/racist language, euphemisms, and doublespeak. Although these are called barriers, I like to think of them as a lesson learned. The first barrier I have experienced is cliche. The cliche is an overused unoriginal phrase or word that at one point was clever (McClean, 2010). From my experience, I have learned that ageism really impacts what a cliche truly is. What was cool to say yesterday is not cool to say today. I haven't said a cliche myself, but I have witnessed one. As an educator, my principal was meeting with a student about their bad attitude. She was trying to figure out what the antecedent was. She was asking the student personal questions and then said, "I am not trying to get up in your wax." The mother of the student, the student, and myself all seemed taken aback and asked for clarification. My principal clarified and said that she use to say wax when she was younger. It's an abbreviation of the word beeswax. Jargon is using language that is not accessible (McClean, 2010). • 38. Habermas and Bourdieu for World Peace The idea of world peace implies there is a common understanding between diverse nations and cultures. Theories or perspectives concerning problems of peace and development, if understood dialectically, can shed light upon the conditions that regulate the use of language. Bourdieu's conditions refer to the relations of power, whereas Habermas' conditions refer to relations of reason. The implementation of a politically neutral language affords the opportunity for every sovereign individual to participate within the public realm for rational discourse to take place. Both Bourdieu and Habermas' theories identify the hurdles of equitable discourse. World peace implies a "neutrality" of speech void of language games and communication anchored in widespread participation. In Bourdieu's words, "The use of language...depends on the social position of the speaker;" and in effect, the authority of language "comes to language from outside." The "outside" is created from social conditions fraught with language games. Bourdieu argues that speaking is inseparable from the distribution of power in a society, and the distribution power in society is unequal. Hence, there is difficulty for neutrality. The analysis of language games involves an awareness of social classes and the relative social position of speakers. The institutionalized social relations of speaking establish who is authorized to speak and recognized as such by others. Bourdieu goes on to identify an inverse relation ... Some regard nineteenth century France to be the France of Napoléon Bonaparte and, in the same respect, it can be argued that ancien régime France was the France of Armand–Jean du Plessis de Richelieu. Upon entering the French political arena, Richelieu was thrown amidst the struggles of international diplomacy, the devious schemes of the nobility, and the disgruntlement of the common people. It is apparent that the issue of internal security was crucial and impacted France's status in the international arena.
