the language is the
combination of two layers:
social and historical.

language refers that
language is linked to society
and culture
IMAGINED
COMMUNITIES
3 Layers of culture:
The social, The
Historical and The
imagination.
Communities are
characterized by facts and
artifacts, common dreams,
fulfilled and unfulfilled
imaginings.
These imaginings
are mediated
through the
language.
What is culture ?
In short culture is the membership in a community that
shares the same space, common social space and
historical.
Insiders/outsiders
Insider
Someone whose
behaviours has been
acquired
His or her body
feels ‘at home’
someone who perceives that
this collective order of things
is their own
Outsider
Someone whose mental
dispositions have evolved
somewhere else
He or she Feels culturally
‘out of place’
Someone who doesn’t
experience either socio-
cultural or political
belonging.
Outsiders are the
nonmembers
Outsider
They don’t fit in with what
is considered normal.
Others in the group
ignore or deny- they are
outsiders and insiders.
It depends where you
are standing and
what you want
They don’t belong
in a group
