Editor's Notes

  • #2 Hello and welcome I’m Sally, and this is Lisa Excited and nervous Insider = Lisa has many years experience working in public libraries Outsider = Sally has approximately 6 months!
  • #3 Met at uni Guiseppe Skype and email Friends Different skills and experiences = sharing and learning opportunities Lisa – questions about library management systems Sally – questions about community outreach Today… Ourselves, our career histories, skills and what we’ve done to get here Audience = laugh, learn a little, leave with useful ideas about skills, career paths and saying hello Follow the #’s for extra ideas from us during the talk and after.
  • #4 Thanks Sally for that intro. I’m the INSIDER of our duo – local council library since 18 now 40; substantive pos= lib tech; currently=secondment in an Assist. Branch Lib role One library – One organisation – experienced lots of different situations eg. Org chg; recruitment; redundancies; new libraries; staff training etc - Inspired a passion for working with and understanding my staff better Career Path – Primary school teacher – no go – condition of employment – Lib Tech course – wasn’t long moving into a Lib Tech supervisory role – over the next 10yrs I worked in diff teams as a supervisor – big learning curve in supervision and staff management Skills and knowledge (Lib Tech) – good stead for yrs to come both at work and with degree – [CLICK]
  • #5 Why Librarianships after all these years? I remember thinking way back when – no way – I don’t ever want to become a librarian – happy to delegate up the food chain. ‘Sign’ - it was time for more learning. Was I ready for a change in career path? – Lib Tech to Librarian. Excuses NOT to do it – list excuses… Didn’t believe in myself; it was out of my comfort zone.
  • #6 So while deliberating…a few things happening at the higher level – decisions made at top - I wanted IN- I wanted a seat at that table – I wanted a VOICE. Courage and hardened up to enrol and get that qualif (grad end of last year – yay me).
  • #7 Lifelong learning Look back at an experience and ask myself - What can I take away from the experience? - Neg into a positive – Don’t give up Some days as a supervisor aren’t easy and to keep things in perspective by focus on learnings does help When it felt uncomfortable = best learnings I’ve had
  • #8 Opportunities – don’t let them pass you by - Consider – Explore – Go for it Never know what new skills you can learn; OR to practice existing skills For Example – Corp Lib; Moving Locations Stay open minded – even if it doesn’t seem like there’s any point – there’s always a point; always something to be learned
  • #9 Leadership/Supervisor - Most roles have been in a supervisory role Lots of years and experiences trying to get it right; I’ve also had lots of exp getting it wrong - But that is what lifelong learning is all about I’m learning LEADERSHIP is learning about resilience; emotional intelligence; embracing change and helping others to do the same Be open to feedback; Stay Positive attitude Embrace good stuff – build confidence; Embrace not so good stuff - you have to be prepared to get it wrong and be ok with it
  • #10 Finally…have a support network Some suggestions I have about creating a support network are: Seek out a mentor – this doesn’t have to be from within your organization; sometimes you need that sounding board Find others at work who are studying – give example SHARING your experiences may be the support someone else needs
  • #11 Thanks Lisa. We started working at around the same time, but we have had really different career paths.
  • #12 Personal assistant, kitchen hand, project administration, secretary, disability support worker, volunteer, waitress, chairperson, massage therapist, parent and now library technician in a medical library. Diplomas – office admin and massage therapy Cert IV – community services BIS Didn’t have the RIGHT skills for libraries Lots of people doing degree were already in libraries – INTIMIDATING Didn’t speak the “language” – accessioning, spine label tape, end processing, library management systems By middle of 2014, might never find library work Study buddies, LN and placement kept me on track, even when I wanted to run screaming in the other direction
  • #13 Placement In my mind there was a lot of pressure to choose the “right library” 3 years to decide – lots of moaning 2 large libraries in Sydney = NO 2 small local libraries = YES, medical library Not going to lie, first day of placement I sat in the car and told myself that it was ok if I hated it, it’s just 3 weeks. Didn’t happen. Staff were funny, generous with time and knowledge and let me have a go at everything. Crash course in libraries Resignation and internal promotions left a vacancy for library technician In the end On the right career path I have a LOT of skills, and some of them the library staff don’t have – WIN!
  • #14 Many core skills that have carried me through all these roles and now in this new career Transferable skills workshops at NLS6 No clear understanding What you’ve done and understand from one job can be used in another. You don’t have to work in a library to have librarian skills and vice versa. Ask other library friends if they will read your selection criteria, even let you see one of their old applications. Communication skills Writing for TAFE and uni. Twitter, blogging, annual reports for various roles, correspondence. Instructions and videos for people with a disability and seniors computer classes. Communicating with other staff, ILL and purchasing communications. Information gathering Researching and troubleshooting for seniors computer classes, neighbourhood centre. Project research and collating statistics for Bank of England. Literature searches, troubleshooting for staff who are studying, assistance with using databases and library catalogue. Technology/Problem solving Using referencing software for study lets me assist hospital students now. Quick to learn new technology. Seniors computer classes let me understand their knowledge gaps and engagement. Can modify training to suit skills. Can assist hospital staff and uni students with tech problems. Learning new LMS and ILL system. Admin and Project Management 9/11 fund and database. Developed within 48 hours to accept multi-million pound donations. Contact with families. Business management at neighbourhood centre. Project mgmt subject at uni already use a lot of these skills. Information management in the library. Understand how the financial/business part of the library works. Conflict Resolution/Teamwork Chairperson of board of management of local neighbourhood centre. Much older people on the board. led them through changes to the constitution, organisational structure and new five year strategic plan.
  • #15 A big part of me understanding transferable skills was realising they were unique to me. Figuring out yours is part common sense, part taking the time to look at what you can do and part having faith that you know what you’re doing!
  • #16 Thank you Sal Where to from here for us? Currently…on secondment till end of Aug; Library L’ship program with Sate Lib of Qld; SALLY: We would like to encourage you all to: - Let yourself be challenged; Say YES; Be ok with getting it wrong – all part of the learning Take the time to discover what your transferable skills are
  • #17 We’d like to finish by encouraging you all to: Use NLS to dive in and start your personal learning network Remember you turned up to NLS for something….right? So get outside your comfort zone…WE DID (we are here)…say hello, make new connections. This is what NLS is all about.
