Manolis Mavrikis presented on the potentials and pitfalls of learning analytics for exploratory and experiential learning. He discussed how learning analytics can support hands-on, inquiry-based learning through simulations, games, and coding activities. He provided examples from EU projects of using learning analytics to gain insights into classroom dynamics, student goal achievement, and support self-reflection. However, barriers remain in achieving the full potential of learning analytics due to issues around teacher and student literacy in making decisions based on analytics data.

Traditional collection management of serials through site licenses and subscriptions is increasingly unsustainable due to rising costs and steady or falling library budgets. The ensuing gaps in access have led to widespread illicit file sharing, resulting in the disintermediation of libraries and the devaluing of publishers. It has therefore become essential to explore alternatives for the delivery of journal literature. We report on the exploration of a new mechanism for the provision of scholarly articles using patron driven acquisition. During the 2012-2013 academic year, the University of Utah Marriott Library, ReadCube, and Nature Publishing Group collaborated on the development and testing of ReadCube Access, an article delivery service designed to allow researchers to immediately access individual articles at a cost lower than traditional interlibrary loan, pay per view or document delivery.
The goal of this session is to explore the economics of collection management from the perspective of supplying needed scholarly articles, and discuss how new technologies like ReadCube Access and patron driven acquisition can support that aim. The session will involve a frank discussion of the effects of and attitudes toward illicit file sharing, from which the audience will learn about the scale of file sharing and how it affects the perceived value and therefore funding of libraries. An interactive workshop on cost per use assessment for various acquisition mechanisms will elucidate how the economics of acquisition mechanisms change with demand and under which conditions patron driven acquisition will save libraries money while increasing patron engagement and satisfaction.

Emerging models of connected professional development with chrissi nerantziSue Beckingham
Learning happens everywhere and all the time. It always did. It was and still is free-range and open. It is owned by the individual. Is education, particularly higher education, now moving into this direction too?
Spotting and seizing opportunities around us to learn, feeds our curiosity and gives our minds wings to explore, engage and experiment, create and grow. Today 'around us' has perhaps a different meaning for those who have access to the Internet and the distributed digital technologies. The affordances of digital tools and social media, transform us into connected active participants and imaginative creators. 'Around us' has gained a pan-geographical dimension and stretches across the globe, across societies and communities, across cultures. This new state of distributed togetherness creates new, exciting and often transformative learning and development opportunities we never had before.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a relatively recent online learning phenomenon that has developed in the last five years. The opportunity that MOOCs offer to developing countries has generated significant interest from higher education as it has opened doors to step into territories that were never available before this era. This paper reports on the research findings of the impact of MOOCs in developing countries. The key challenges and opportunities identified by the researchers in using the MOOC concept within the Sri Lankan higher education context is discussed. It also highlights how developing countries can transform education, and provide lifelong learning opportunities which will give access to learning resources, innovative learning technologies, higher engagement and collaborative learning opportunities with international experts.

SHEILA Project - Workshop Slides Online Educa Berlin 2016LACE Project
Learning Analytics (LA) is currently a very active topic in education, but its implementation is beset with potential pitfalls for an organisation wishing to develop extensive use of it. Building upon international experience and local knowledge, the EC-funded SHEILA Project (Jan 2016-June 2018) is creating a policy framework for higher education institutions to enable them to design and enact an LA policy for themselves, using an innovative concept mapping approach (ROMA) combined with interviews of key stakeholders in several European countries. It is a partnership of the Universities of Edinburgh (coordinator), Tallinn University, Open University NL and Carlos III Madrid, with Brussels Education Services, Erasmus Student Network and European Quality Assurance Network (ENQA).
In this workshop we discussed with participants our interim data from:
- interviews from senior HEI leaders charged with the implementation of learning analytics to understand the current processes, barriers, and opportunities;
- group concept mapping by international expert panel to identify critical concerns for learning analytics policy;
- benchmark of the learning analytics sophistication in the European HE sector by administering a survey to members of the EUA.

Scalable Learning Analytics and Interoperability – an assessment of potential...LACE Project
A presentation given at the 2015 EUNIS Congress, held at Abertay University in Dundee, June 2015.
Learning analytics is now moving from being a research interest to topic for adoption. As this happens, the challenge of efficiently and reliably moving data between systems becomes of vital practical importance. In this context, “scalable learning analytics” is not intended to refer to infrastructural throughput, but to refer to the feasibility of a combination of: a) pervasive system
integration, and b) efficient analytical and data management practices. There are a number of
considerations that are of particular relevance to learning analytics in addition to elements that are generic to analytics. This contribution to EUNIS 2015 seeks to clarify, by argument and through evidence, both where there are potential benefits and limitations to applying interoperability specifications (and standards) in the service of scalable learning analytics.
Assessment Analytics - EUNIS 2015 E-Learning Task Force WorkshopLACE Project
This presentation is to introduce a discussion session at the 2015 EUNIS Congress workshop session of the E-Learning Task Force. The LACE Project is very briefly introduced, followed by an explanation of the presenter's view of learning analytics and a critique of some common themes. Assessment Analytics is presented as an antithesis to these themes and an assessment lifecycle model (used in the Jisc Electronic Management of Assessment Programme) is used to outline some ways in which assessment analytics can be realised, as stimulus for discussion.

European Perspectives on Learning Analytics: LAK15 LACE panelLACE Project
Panel presentation at Learning Analytics and Knowledge 2015 (LAK15) in Poughkeepsie, NY, USA by a team of speakers from the LACE project.
Since the emergence of learning analytics in North America, researchers and practitioners have worked to develop an international community. The organization of events such as SoLAR Flares and LASI Locals, as well as the move of LAK in 2013 from North America to Europe, has supported this aim. There are now thriving learning analytics groups in North American, Europe and Australia, with smaller pockets of activity emerging on other continents. Nevertheless, much of the work carried out outside these forums, or published in languages other than English, is still inaccessible to most people in the community. This panel, organized by Europe’s Learning Analytics Community Exchange (LACE) project, brings together researchers from five European countries to examine the field from European perspectives. In doing so, it will identify the benefits and challenges associated with sharing and developing practice across national boundaries.
