La Meri (1899-1988) was an American dancer who studied and performed dances from around the world. She made her debut in New York City in 1928 and began performing regularly at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts starting in 1940. There, she was a major faculty member for decades and served on the board of directors. La Meri specialized in Spanish and Indian dance forms and gave memorable performances interpreting Swan Lake using Hindu gestures. She continued actively performing and choreographing new works until her late career in the 1960s and 70s.
