The 1984 Summer Olympics, known as the Games of the 23rd Olympiad, were held in Los Angeles from July 28th to August 12th. Over 6,800 athletes from 140 countries competed in 21 sports and 221 events at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. American sprinter Carl Lewis won four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, long jump, and 4x100m relay, while Romanian gymnast Ekaterina Szabo took home gold medals in most rhythmic gymnastics competitions. This was the first Olympics with a women's marathon and most Soviet Union and other communist countries did not attend.
