The 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles, USA from July 28th to August 12th. Over 6,700 athletes from 140 countries competed in 21 sports. Many Eastern Bloc countries boycotted the Games in response to the US boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Despite the boycotts, the Games were very successful. Carl Lewis of the US won four gold medals in track and field. The US also won gold in basketball. Mexico achieved success in race walking. France won the football tournament. Los Angeles was the first city to make a profit from hosting the Olympics.
