Berlin was chosen to host the 1936 Summer Olympics. After Hitler rose to power in Germany, he initially wanted to cancel the Olympics but was convinced to host them to showcase the "new Germany". However, Hitler instituted racist policies that excluded Jewish athletes from the German team. Despite concerns over Nazi persecution, the Olympics went ahead. African American athlete Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals, countering Nazi ideology of Aryan supremacy. The Olympics were a propaganda success for Hitler but Germany would later withdraw from hosting the 1940 Games due to World War 2.
