Elena Nikolayeva
was born on February 1, 1966 in the
village of Akshiki in Marposadskiy
region of the Chuvash Republic. After
graduating from high school Elena
entered
Chuvash
Agricultural
Academy. There she began to
practice race walking and already in
the first year she was awarded the
title of Master of Sports. In 1986 she
completed the Master of sports of
international class and set the record
in race walking for 10 km for the
Soviet Union.
A world championship in
1987 in Rome became the
first major sport event to
Elena. She was the 5th in
the race. During her first
Olympics Games in 1992 in
Barcelona she won a silver
medal as part of the Joint
team. In the same year
Elena married her coach
Anatoly Nikolaev.
In 1993 Nikolayeva was the
seventh on the summer
World Championship in
Stuttgart and won the world
championship in Toronto at
the distance of 3 kilometers.
At the Olympic Games in
Atlanta in 1996 she became
an Olympic champion in
walking for 10 kilometers.
At the end of her sporting career
Elena
Nikolaeva
achieved
another great success - at the
age of 37 she became a world
champion
at
the
Paris
championship in 2003 at the
distance of 20 kilometers. In
addition to medals at the Olympic
Games, World and European
Championships, Nikolaeva also
won many championships of the
USSR and Russia.
Elena Nikolaeva was awarded the
Medal of Honor, the medal "For
Service to the Motherland», the
Order "For Services to the
Republic of Chuvashia," medal
"For
Distinguished
Military
Service» awarded the title of
Honored Master of Sports and
Honored Worker of Physical
Culture and Sports of the
Republic of Chuvashia.
From 2009 to present she has been a
coach and a teacher of athletics in
Cheboksary Secondary Specialized
School of Olympic Reserve.
She is also a member of the State
Council of Chuvashia.
