The ancient Olympics began in 776 BC in Greece as a religious festival to honor Zeus, consisting of a single footrace for men. Over time more events were added. The modern Olympics were founded in 1896 in Athens by Pierre de Coubertin and include both men and women competing in various sports. Key symbols of the Olympics include the five interlocking rings representing the five inhabited continents, the Olympic torch whose flame is lit in Olympia and carried to the host city, and medals awarded to the top three finishers in each event.
