The Olympic Games began in ancient Greece when a man named Coroebus won a footrace. Held every four years in Olympia, Greece, the games were a religious festival that brought peace and featured competitions. Though expanding over time, the ancient Olympics ended when the Roman emperor Theodosius abolished them in 394 AD. The modern Olympics restarted in 1896 in Athens and have continued to be held every four years, bringing the world together through sports.
