This session will present two large scale digitization projects, the Springer Book Archives and the National Library of the Netherlands (aka the Dutch KB). The audience will learn the ‘nuts and bolts’ of these unique projects: key decisions, timelines, consequences for internal and external stakeholders, production matters and clearing hurdles such as rights and permissions. The impact these key initiatives may have on long term preservation, the physical library, metadata and discoverability, author relations and the long tail of usage are topics for discussion with the audience.

The importance of software to research is growing, which is reflected in the emergence of the Research Software Engineer (RSE) role and moves to recognise software as a research output. The Research Computing team at the University of St Andrews sits within the Digital Research division of the Library and seeks to support research in two principal ways. Firstly, the team are available as a development resource to researchers across the University; secondly, they are leading initiatives to understand and support better the breadth and depth of research software engineering activities across the University.

In 2015, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) became legally responsible for the digital infrastructure of the Dutch public libraries.
The KB wants to offer a platform where people and information come together. Their most important task for the years to come is the development of a national digital library - together with their partners in the network.
In this session, representatives from the KB will present their approach towards the Dutch digital library infrastructure. They will address some issues and welcome input from colleague librarians that are facing the same challenges.

22. Appendix: Center for Processing Speech and Images
• The Center for Processing Speech and Images (PSI) is one of the units within
the department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) at KU Leuven. It is specialized
in computer vision and has object and object class recognition as one of its
most important domains of research. Besides more general goals as scene
understanding, segmentation or invariant object recognition, it has experience
with character recognition in licence plates and automatic recognition of
handwritten music scores for transcription to modern music.
With more than 60 researchers it is one of the biggest research groups of its
kind in Europe and has a lot of experience in national and international projects.
2 professors have received ERC grants of the European Commission and have
won several other prestigious prizes.
