I was involved in Project Triumph, which is the largest Malt Whisky
distillery to have been built in Scotland. I was responsible for writing
most of the PLC Code and was lead engineer whilst commissioning. The
project’s initial commissioning phase was finished a week ahead of
schedule. There is a high level of automation, safety systems and
process control expected of this modern processing plant.
I have represented Cal-tech on a number of Sites throughout Scotland. I
have a thorough knowledge of process control which has served me well
as often I work alone on sites which are producing.
I replaced an Omron PLC/HMI system with a Siemens S7/HMI system
on a Filling machine for John Dewars & Sons of Glasgow.
This work was handled directly by KP Controls for Dewars. This meant I
had to tender for the contract, design the system, produce all
documentation, liaise with the Project Manager, install the hardware,
write all code and graphics, I/O check all devices. In short I was
ultimately responsible for the project and liable if anything went wrong.
The project went extremely well. I was on time and on budget, this has
now led to me securing a number of other projects from Dewars.
The most recent project that I have been involved in for Cal-tech/Diageo
is Teaninich Distillery in Alness, Scotland. The distillery doubled in size
and is now the most automated malt distillery within Diageo.
There were a number of distillery control system upgrades progressing
at the same time. Diageo requested that Cal-tech designed and
implemented a new set of control system standards to be used by all
System Integrators.
My involvement was to design and test all new PLC User Defined
Function Blocks, Code layout and Device interlock control. These were
completed within Unity Pro XL supplied by Schneider.
This project included an Intelligent Motor Control Centre, ASi Safe,
several Ethernet protocols, Profibus network and System Platform.
I was also responsible for the code design, documentation and
commissioning of the new Meura Brewery equipment. This included
liaising with Meura design engineers who are based in Belgium.
I have a high level of process knowledge out with the coding side of the
job. I am often requested by Distillery managers to monitor processes
and implement optimisation. This may include code modifications, PID
loop tuning, request mechanical design changes, pump ramp control and
various other tools that I have acquired throughout my career.
Coming through the maintenance ranks has served me well when it
comes to commissioning new equipment; that is I don’t mind getting my
hands dirty!

Biscuit Manufacturer
Responsible for all PLC and SCADA modifications and Installations
within my area (Siemens S5, S7, Allen Bradley SLC 500 & Control
/Micro Logix PLC’s. FIX 32, WinCC and Iconics SCADA packages).
Installed and commissioned Siemens HMI Panels and PLC’s on
existing production line, which included an ASi network for all field
devices (PEC’s, solenoids, sounders, encoders), a ProfibusDP network
to link all Inverters and a MPI network to link all PLC’s and HMI’s
Involved in the upgrade of one of the complex processes. My part was
to install, program and commission an Iconics Genesis 32 SCADA
system interfacing with Allen Bradley SLC 505 using the Engineering
LAN as a HUB; this meant that the process can be monitored from
various remote stations within the factory and also through web GUI
anywhere
One of the many projects I was involved in was to install a Siemens
MASSFLOW meter, remote I/O station, HMI and to integrate it into the
existing process, this included a new Profibus DP Network, the
instrument is also networked which allows the capture of all relevant
data. I used Siemens PDM software to set up the instrument.
Create PM schedules for process and high speed packaging
equipment.
Responsible for all maintenance and breakdown repairs on production
line including most mechanical and all electrical repairs.
Work on high speed packaging equipment, which involves the set-up

2000- 2002 Diageo Shieldhall, Glasgow
Electrician
Whisky Bottling Plant
Responsible for all electrical breakdowns on the high speed packaging
equipment
Designed and implemented a Vent tube detection system. This
included designing an adjustable bracket which housed a LASER PEC
which scanned the tip of the filling tube on the Bottle filling machines.
The tips of these tubes were made of plastic and were slightly wider
than the stem. They would often get destroyed, at the time there was
no way of telling if the debris had entered the bottle. My system
measured each tip and if one was missing then the machine would
stop immediately and inform the operator with the head number.
Added Simatic HMI’s to most lines which displayed information of reject
totals, label removal function, speed and various other functions which
proved useful

Additional Information
Below is a copy of an email sent from the Diageo project engineer, from a project I was lead
engineer on, to his boss, the distillery manager and the director of Caledonia Technologies.
Hi Robert,
Just a note to say after a monumental push by Kevin & Andy over the weekend we managed to
start Mashing again yesterday. The two of them were faultless, with over 50 hrs each between
Fri Morning and last night I really could not have asked for anymore.
I’m knackered and I’d just to watch them! So just to officially say a BIG BIG thank you to
everyone involved but most of all to these two because they brought it in.
Sometimes you wonder why your in this job, but working with two guys like that, and achieving
what you set out to do makes it all worthwhile.
I’ll try and phone you shortly about the next challenge – KIV – and the latest plan from Ken &
Sandi!!
Thanks again.
