2. Research; What a school magazine looks like
I want my front cover to include elements
from both these examples. I don’t want
the title to be the name of the school, as
the magazine isn't based mainly on
academic and educational ideas, and i
believe by having the name of the school
it may give of that idea, also by having a
more casual name it may appeal to the
students more so than not. However, i
prefer the simplicity of “St Mary’s School”
magazine as i feel that there is too much
going on in “Strike” and may not appeal
to the older generation. The colours
stand out, however i wish mine to be
more subtle and the attraction to occur
from the photograph as opposed to
blocks of colour.

3. Front Cover Idea
My final plan for my front cover
The colour scheme will be green, as the photo i have
chosen to use shall be of a person looking out over
the grass and trees looking out to the river. Therefore
the masthead shall be a dark green with the sub
headings of a lighter green. I don’t want too much
going on in the front cover, as the target audience is
the whole school, including parents, teachers and
students and therefore has to appeal to a wide age
group. Therefore i tried to make it appear as
sophisticated as possible yet still be attractive to a
younger age group. The name “the Otherside” was
chosen because the magazine will be made to inform
those involved in school life what goes on behind the
education and is therefore the “other side” of school,
hence the tag line being “of students and school”

4. Contents Page Idea
My final plan for my contents page
once again i wanted my contents page
to appeal to a wide audience range and
be rather simplistic. I wish for it to stand
out and therefore include a lot of
photographs and have limited text. It
therefore, has green as its main colour
scheme, to show the connection behind
the pages of the magazine. Yet also
having bold colours which stand out,
attracting the eye to the page and then
the main articles.

7. If I Were to Make it Again
From this task, i have learnt a lot and overall i am pleased with my
work. I would chose to improve my contents page as i feel it looks
quite rushed and messy and i could neaten it up and make it look
perhaps more professional. There are some small changes i would
make to my cover page, such as lowering the bar code as i think it is
too high and appears awkward. Although my aim was to appear
simplistic i feel it may be too much so and i could have added further
information in the form of cover lines.
However, i feel more experienced in the photoshop software and i
feel that when i come to make my final music magazine i will be able
to manipulate my photographs further and possible enhance the text
to merge with the photos as opposed to appearing so separate
especially in the contents page which could be changed by
including less blank spaces and more photos.

27. Making My Contents Page
I wished for my magazine to suit the style of the
front cover, therefore keeping the genre of
“Modern Pop” with the continuance of the colour
scheme with blue and pinks. I wanted a modern
and simplistic contents page and the inspiration is
gathered mainly from the “Vibe” example with the
two column lay out. However i wished for more
text to be used, using buzz words to stand out to
the reader and contrasting colours of text which
stand out further, drawing the reader to certain
articles.
Monday, April 4, 2011
28. To Begin With:
I initially started creating my contents page using
the Mac program “pages” however i felt there was
little place for creativity as i did not like the fixed
template created on the program. I therefore
continued to use Adobe Photoshop CS5, as i
know how to use the software due to previous
experience. I was also able to improve my skills
gained from making the front cover.
Monday, April 4, 2011
30. Possibilities:
I am going to choose the second image. Both photos would be a good choice for the

opposed to background. Therefore making enables a stronger connection between the

Monday, April 4, 2011
31. Effects:
I took the idea from the NME front cover
example of the ripped paper effect. I
liked the contrast between the main
image and the side headlines and i
wished to incorporate this within my
contents page. To do this, i found an
image of torn paper from google and by
using the “colour replacement” tool on
photoshop i was able to change the
colour whilst keeping the texture. Then
by adding text on top i managed to
create a similar effect to the one
conveyed in the NME front cover.
Monday, April 4, 2011
32. Effects:
For both images on the contents page, i changed the curve levels
to create a cross processed effect. Cross processing is the
technique of deliberately processing photographic film with
chemicals meant for a different type of film. However, the effect
results in a vivid change of colour and tones whilst appearing softer
with an older look. cross processed image- after

33. Text:
Finding a appropriate font ended up being more challenging that i
initially thought. I wanted a key font to flow throughout the magazine
to keep to a specific style. However the font i used in my masthead
was “Macropsia BRK” which worked effectively as a
masthead as it was large, therefore stood out whilst being a narrow
text so it fitted a typical magazine style. This text didn’t work for my
contents page though, as i needed a simpler text along the side to
convey a modern approach to the magazine to fit the pop genre. To
compensate for this, i used the font “Helvetica Neue Ultralight” and
“Helvetica Neue Light” throughout the whole page continuing to
stick to the magazines style, yet focusing more on the colours and
images as opposed to the text styles.
Monday, April 4, 2011
34. Layers:
Making the contents page was less complex than the front cover,
resulting in less layers and manipulation needed. The page
involves a lot of coloured blocks, two of which have been created
to look like torn paper. The main editing technique used within this
section was on the photos, as previously mentioned i used a
cross processing effect on them, yet further editing was needed
in the form of cropping and adjusting the brightness. Due to the
layout of the page, the righthand column includes square blocks
and photos, and i therefore needed to crop the image from
rectangular to square to suit the theme.

37. Audience Review:
-Does it fit the style established by the front cover? In the form of
colour scheme and genre “Yes i can understand a clear
correlation between the genre conveyed in the front cover”
-Does it convey efficient information for a contents page? “yes i

40. Choosing The Photo:
I wanted to use a photo from the initial photo shoot as i wished for my double page

The choice was between the four initial selected photos.

I wanted an interview to be the dominant feature in the

introduction to “Sohko Shimada” followed by an interview
asking her about how she came into the music career.
Monday, April 4, 2011
43. Double Page Spread Text:
Sohko Shimada is one of the biggest artists of the year, now preparing for her Asia tour next week. However FEAT discovered that fame
came as a mad rush for her as she declares “I never wanted to be famous, I enjoy making music and I want others to feel the same.”
Sohko invited us to her London flat so we could find out more about the latest music sensation.Feat: How old were you when you
decided that you wanted to be a singer?SS: It was never really a definite decision. I always used to sing around the house and make a
few videos on youtube, but I never planned to be a famous singer, I always wanted to be a lawyer. I never wanted to be famous, I enjoy
making music and I want others to feel the same way .Feat: who are your musical influences?SS: That’s a hard question, I don’t like
putting my music to a specific label. I really like Florence and the Machine’s music and I feel I incorporate some of their rock and soul in
my music. I admire her individuality and I respect how she sounds different to the typical styles of music we are used to today. Feat: do
you feel Youtube and Myspace are a good stepping-stone for musicians?SS: When I first uploaded my videos to youtube, I never
imagined the response I received. Like I said, I had no initial plans to pursue a music career, however I do believe that these websites
and the supportive audience attached to them are a key and under looked role in creating a name for yourself.
FEAT: We’ve heard you were an A grade student, do you regret turning to music rather than going to University?SS: No, I do not regret
choosing music over academics. I tried hard at school and yes, I did receive good grades but looking back, I never enjoyed it as much
as I enjoy singing. I am a strong believer in following whatever you have a true passion for because more often than not, you are bound
to enjoy it and be good.FEAT: one last question. What can we expect to hear from you in the future?SS: I don’t want to give too much
away, but you can definitely expect to hear a lot more from me in the upcoming months. After touring Asia, I am coming back to
England to shoot some music videos for my next two singles and I am already writing songs for my second album which shall hopefully
be as successful as my previous one, “Forever Young.”FEAT: Thank you Sohko for letting us interview you and we wish you all the best
for your upcoming tour and hopefully many more to come. SS: You’re welcome, and please feel free to visit my new website
sohkoshimadamusic.co.uk to find out more information about my latest tours and new releases

44. Audience Review:
-Does the article make you want to find out more about “Sohko
Shimada”? “yes i believe it does”
-Does it fit the conveyed pop style? “Yes, and the image suits
the front cover”
-Does the headline stand out and make you want to read the
article? “I like the idea of a key quote being the headline, it
draws the reader in to the subject of the article”
-Is the black and white effective? “i think it does, and the slight
hints of colour, such as the blue and red adds an intriguing
effect keeping the reader interesting”
-Are there any obvious changes you would make? “i would
