 It is the solution of the problem posed by
electric energy generation from fossil
sources.
 It was conceived by an Italian researcher
MASSIMO IPPOLITO.
11/1/2018Kite Gen 3
 The first design of KITEGEN is a small scale
prototype.
 The electric actuators which hold the kite
lines are fixed with respect to the ground.
11/1/2018Kite Gen 4
 The KSU is the unit that allows to
automatically piloting a power kite.
 At the very core of the project stays the
software that, receiving data also from on-
board avionic sensors.
11/1/2018Kite Gen 5
• Kite steering unit has two electric actuators
11/1/2018Kite Gen 6
 In order to protect from any interference the
sensors are arranged in the system.
11/1/2018Kite Gen 7
 Energy is generated by continuously
repeating a cycle composed of two phases.
11/1/2018Kite Gen 8
 The average power of wind is about 2kw per
sq.m.
11/1/2018Kite Gen 9
 Multiple kites can be easily stacked for more
power.
 Kites fly higher therefore have more
consistent and cleaner wind.
 Flying a single 10sqmt kite to produce 10kw
of power which could supply electricity for
about 10 homes.
 The area swept by a plant with a circular
diameter of 800mt diameter, the same
quantity can be reached by approx., 150
latest wind generation turbines.
11/1/2018Kite Gen 10
 Kites require launching (after
installation/maintenance and after a no wind
period) and landing (in case of thunder storm
or hurricane).
 Wind turbine towers have the same lightning
problem during thunderstorm but they do
shut off in case of strong wind during
hurricane.
11/1/2018Kite Gen 11
 It is a new class of wind energy generators
able to overcome the main limitations of the
present Aeolian technology based on wind
mills.
