Traditional wind turbine system
Wind energy is one of the
most popular renewable
energies in the world.
However, the generation of a
strong and steady wind flow is
not easy to achieve.

BIG QUESTION?
What is Airborne wind
turbine?
Why is it Important?

What is Airborne wind turbine ?
Airborne wind energy regards the generation of
usable power by airborne devices.
It contrast to towered wind turbines.
 Airborne wind system are either flying freely in
the air or are connected by a tether to the ground
like kite or tethered balloons.
44/1/2017
How it works,
 It turns out that all airborne wind energy system with
significant power output are mechanically connected to
the ground in order to exploit the relative velocity
between the air mass and the ground .
 In fact to be able to harvest wind power, they need to
maintain a storage force against this motion .
54/1/2017
They can be
connected to a
stationery ground
station, or to another
moving , but non
flying object like a
land or sea vehicle.
Power is generated
in form of a traction
force.
The airborne wind turbine technology can be
categorized under four major types based on their
design concept:
O Kite type
O Balloon type
O Kytoon type (Combined
Kite & Balloon)
O Tethered auto gyro type

KITE TYPE:
A research on airborne wind
turbine technology
innovations reveals that the
“Kite type AWTs” technique,
the most common type, has
high scope of growth in the
future
Balloon type and Kytoon type
 The “Balloon type AWTs”
extract energy from wind
turbines carried aloft using
balloons.
 The “Kytoon type AWTs”
utilize both kite and balloon
arrangements for
generating power from high
altitude winds.

The traditional wind turbines also face a
few challenges as below
O Conventional wind turbines
O Produce varying power due to inconsistent and
unpredictable wind conditions
O Are noisy
O Impact visual and aesthetic of the region
O Affect wild life
4/1/2017 10
Drawbacks of traditional wind turbine system
O No wind, no work
O The wind doesn’t blow every
time
O Unreliable source of energy
O Dangerous for birds
O Noise and electro magnetic
waves
O Electromagnetic waves are
disturb the TV and RADIO
signals

Advantages of Airborne
1. An advantage of this configuration is the
extremely low weight per square meter of the
airborne part of the system .
2. The advantage is that they can stay airborne in the
absence of wind indefinitely , and without power
consumption.
124/1/2017
Disadvantages
a. It is physically
impossible to install
every place.
b. Availability of land
space is the another
drawback
c. The major problem is
interaction of
environmental impacts
