“When awareness is brought to an emotion,
power is brought to your life.” – Tara Meyer
Robson
Adding emotional intelligence to your toolkit of
success skills might be the most important thing you
can do for your career. Emotional intelligence, or EQ,
matters more than intellect alone, and it has
practical value in the workplace.
“Emotional intelligence is the skill of understanding
and managing your emotions and also
understanding the emotions of those around you,”
says executive coach, consultant and speaker Irene
Becker, who works with client world-wide. “High
emotional intelligence is reflected in self-awareness,
self-management, motivation, empathy and
social/communication skills.”
In “Working with Emotional Intelligence,” author
Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., CEO of Emotional Intelligence
Services, calls EQ “a different way of being smart.”
Essential for leaders
“Organizations are absolutely beginning to require
their leaders to demonstrate these skills in order to
be hired and promoted,” says Travis Bradberry,
Ph.D., President, Talent Smart, Inc., which provides
emotional intelligence coaching, training and
assessment services. “This practice is far from
reaching its peak, however, and many organizations
shoot themselves in the foot by hiring and
promoting people without looking at the whole
picture. As a result, most are late to the game in
working to develop EQ skills once leaders are on
board.”
Sorting out complex issues
People who perceive emotions accurately (both in
themselves and others) better understand difficult
situations, says Bradberry. “This includes where
people are coming from, why they’re doing what
they’re doing, and how their own behaviour is
holding them back. Emotion is a primary driver of
human behaviour. When you’re blind to it, the world
is a difficult and confusing place.”
Build and practice EQ
“Leaders today need to listen, learn and
communicate across diverse groups, internal and
external constituencies,” says Becker. She cites four
barriers to building EQ skills:
1. Not understanding the importance of
building high emotional intelligence.
2. Lack of desire or interest in building high
emotional intelligence.
3. Lack of self-awareness about one’s need to
build higher emotional intelligence.
4. A bias or fear because of the term
emotional intelligence, and what they think is
required to build this skill.
“There has to be an inner desire to learn and
improve,” Becker explains. “You can’t make a fire
with wet wood. When some people hear the term
emotional intelligence, it scares them. They think it
might be like going through psychotherapy, and it’s
not Emotional intelligence training is not
psychotherapy. Its focus is on powerful and practical
skills that anyone can use to improve their personal
or professional lives.”
Learn and practice
EQ training can be done effectively in a group setting
or with individual coaching. Exercises may begin
with a self-assessment, and then cover four key
emotional skills:
 self-awareness
 self-management
 social awareness
 Relationship management
As individuals explore their own EQ capabilities,
they can then work on specific ways to apply EQ
skills in the workplace.
After learning EQ skills, practice them, says
Bradberry. “When you begin developing new
emotional intelligence skills, you need to practice
new behaviours long enough to make them habitual.
The brain loves efficiency and it will only provide the
neuronal plasticity needed to support new
behaviour when you repeat that behaviour over and
over again.”
“Any situation in which you have human contact is a
practice zone for EQ,” adds Becker.
Emotional Intelligence
in the Workplace
Contributed by
Rtr. Akram
Engage and empathize
“The need to use every communication to build trust,
transparency of communication and engagement
cannot be underestimated,” Becker says. “Emotional
intelligence requires a balance of firmness and
caring, authenticity and empathy. Those skills must
be learned and honed.”
Responding to Workplace Conflicts with EQ
Workplace conflicts—covert and overt—demand
high emotional intelligence skills, says executive
coach Irene Becker. “Approximately 40 % of
employee turnover is due to disagreements between
an employee and his or her boss. When emotional
intelligence and communication skills are lacking,
turmoil builds. That translates into a disengaged
workforce or job dissatisfaction that leads to high
turnover.”
“One of the most common problems is a
communication style that undermines retention,
creates disengagement and foments conflict,”
Becker notes. “A leader who has not developed EQ
skills is less able to gauge the needs, wants and
expectations of those they lead”. This individual may
be focused on the task at hand, and communicate in
a style of manner that may be very appropriate for
them, but does not engage the other party at all. If a
leader is speaking to closed ears, whatever they say
is irrelevant.”
Becker cites the example of one of her coaching
clients, a 45-year-old manager who had poor
communication skills and a low level of emotional
intelligence. “It became such a problem that her
entire staff walked out,” Becker recounts. “She knew
she wasn’t a communicator, and she finally realized
that she needed to improve or she would jeopardize
her whole department’s success. With some
coaching, she developed a better awareness of her
own and others’ emotions. She is now an excellent
communicator and a more successful leader.”
Therefore Emotional intelligence is essential for a
leader to influence others and inspire them through
the way he handles the team.

Rotaract around the World
EM-NET Primary School Project:
Rotary and Rotaract clubs are supposed to have
service projects but most important is the fact that
these projects are for the improvement of the
communities out of which these clubs operate. The
Rotaract club of Makerere University chose to
donate a water tank to Em-Net Primary School in
Katanga, a city slum near to the university.
On 20th of September club members led by the
president went to Em-Net Primary School for the
first phase of the project. This was the construction
of the base on which the water tank was going to sit.
It was designed to get the members a more hands on
approach to their project other than hiring people to
do their work. The brick masonry and plastering was
done entirely by club members with guidance of a
builder while the rest of the installations like nailing
of fascia boards and the roof gutters was to be done
by the builder.
The handover of the water tank took place on 27th
September at 9 am at the same school presided over
by PDG Nelson Kawalya in the presence of club
members, Rotarians and members of other clubs. He
encouraged the headmaster of the school as well as
the members of the community to utilize the water
tank efficiently, handle it responsibly, and teach the
children proper hand washing and its importance.
The project is in line with two of Rotary
International’s six areas of focus i.e. DISEASE
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT and MATERNAL
AND CHILD HEALTH.
We were joined by members of the Rotary clubs of
Mengo and Kampala City Makerere, Rotaract Clubs
of Bukoto, Kampala University, Mulago and the
Provisional Rotaract club of Kampala North.
The pupils of the school and the residents of Katanga
near the school will receive clean water harvested
from the rainfall rather than move long distances in
search of the same.
A Rotaract (or rotary) club without community
projects is just a social club and it is these projects
that bring out the best of our virtues as members of
this prestigious family of Rotary. I would like to
thank the President and membership of the Rotaract
club of Makerere University for their wholehearted
participation and support. Continue serving your
communities and let us all Light Up Rotary.
Makerere University Blood Donation Drive
Time and again the blood shortage in our country is
published in the newspapers and discussed on
televisions and radios; case in point Daily Monitor of
September 1st, 2014 on page 22 and 23. It is against
this background that the Rotary club of Kampala City
Makerere and the Rotaract Club of Makerere
University decided to partner and carry out a blood
donation drive on the Campus grounds.
This project was initiated by the club in the rotary
year 2013/2014 in partnership with the Rotary Club
of Kampala City Makerere, the rotary club that
fellowships on Campus.
On 5th and 6th of September 2014, the Rotaract Club
of Makerere University with help from the Uganda
Blood Transfusion Services and Uganda Red Cross
Society set up in the Freedom Square a venue for all
individuals on the university grounds to donate
blood to the Nakasero Blood Bank. Awareness about
Rotaract club of
Makerere University
Rotary international
District 9211
this cause was through posters that had been pinned
up earlier and these were supplemented by a public
address system that was used to call out to the
passers-by.
A total of 89 units of blood were collected over the 2
day drive which was short of our expected haul. This
was mainly due to the heavy rains that were
experienced over the period.
The blood donation drive is in line with two of
Rotary International’s six areas of focus i.e. DISEASE
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT and MATERNAL
AND CHILD HEALTH.
We also used the drive as a platform to spread
awareness about rotaract and rotary in general to
the university population. We were also joined by
members of the Rotaract Club of Bukoto.
The units of blood that were collected will be used to
save a number of lives in hospitals. This is one step
that will lead to a giant leap in ending the shortage
of blood in our hospitals and country.

Hello Friends..!
As I began to read an article the other day, each and
every line of it reminded me of those who can never
read it. As I moved forward, each word pricked me
from inside and I couldn’t resist myself from writing
down this blog. It took me not more than one single
night to realize how lucky we all are. Or maybe we
never bothered of realizing it ever. All this happened
because of only one opportunity that I got to record
the audio-books for blind students which can help
them study, or just make them feel that they are also
capable enough of doing something in life. All it gave
me was goose bumps, a feeling of shamefulness and
a disgust for my dependence upon the last moment
to prepare for the exams.
Every single word I read from books is never stored
as it is in my mind. I retain hardly 30-40% of what I
read from my books. Rest everything what I write in
the exam is what comes into my mind. I am sure
many of you reading this would have been doing the
same since so many years. But is the case similar to
those who are not fortunate enough to read through
their own eyes. Leave the text, are they all able to see
the pictures around, the maps, the diagrams in our
textbooks to which we don’t even want to give a
look? The ease of studying at a night before an exam
which we all have, the ease of copying from our
friends(in case you have any doubt regarding the
question), the relaxation we all have in our minds
that we can do anything anytime we can just turn
over the pages and say “yes! I am done with this
much percentage of syllabus” ever thought how it
would be for those who are still depending upon
audio tapes to complete their syllabus. Most of us
will answer this question in negative.
We think there isn’t a reason for us to bother since
the situation isn’t with us. This is where the problem
lies. We are never grateful for what we have instead
we keep longing for what we don’t have.
Let alone blinds, ever pondered about those who
can’t hear to what others say. Their life is even more
challenging. Maybe for one reason that being blind
cuts you only from the objects of the world but being
dumb or deaf cuts you from the people in your life.
VISION-A BLESSING OR AN
IRREVERENT BOUNTY
So should these people stop living? Should these
people give up on their lives just because one or
more of their senses does not work properly? Lucky
enough these lives are who have a god gift of other
outstanding senses which fills in the gap. For
somebody has rightly said “Life is too short to waste
time on things that you can’t have. Stop doing that
and start realizing the worth of what you have. Life
is also too short to stay in a situation that doesn't
serve you or make you happy. Recognize what you
are worth and demand nothing less than that. Leave
the rest.”
One of those initiatives taken by our club to attend
the issue is a project titles “Audio Books Recording”
in association with Cheema Trust, Chandigarh. The
Talking Library for the Visually Impaired is set up to
cater to the educational needs of people with visual
impairment and print disability. By providing audio
books we help students excel in their subject areas,
meet their educational requirements, and increases
their chances of better job opportunities to lead
them to a path of self-sufficiency.
The library membership is free of cost for students
and allows them to borrow audio materials as per
their requirement. This includes college curriculum,
materials for competitive exams, news and so on.
Each one of us is blessed to help ourselves. Realize
this. Respect this. Value this. The comforts we all
have in our life are definitely the results of the
karmas we did in our past. And in the next janmas
also all we get is the result of what we do in this life
because what goes around, comes back to you.
So do good to everyone who you think deserves,
respect and thank god and your parents for what you
have in your life today and just feel contented in each
phase of your life. Just try to make somebody’s life
better with what you have and bring a change in
their life with every possible thing you can do for
them.
Yours in Rotaract,
Rtr. Surbhi Manocha

Hearline Project
Rotaract Club of Chandigarh has always believed
in long term goals and projects. I being a part of this
club for three years now have also been a part of all
these projects but one of the most amazing project
that has brought as much happiness and
contentment to others as it has to me is 'Heartline'.
It's our signature fund-raising event where the cause
is heart surgery of the kids from within the country
and without. This year itself, in the past month
around 7 kids were brought to India from Rawanda,
Africa. I had the fortune to meet those blessed souls
who came all the way without their parents with
only one hope...that they will survive.
Their smiles and optimism is all it took to make me
go the mile and pledge my allegiance to this cause.
Almost 500 such surgeries have already been
successfully done within less than a decade but
hopefully this is just one of the many more
successful decades to come.
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to bring this
project in sight of the Rotaractors at the national
level in general and in Rotaract club of Zenith in
particular. I wish this magazine receives broad
readership.

  • 13. Share-Point “When awareness is brought to an emotion, power is brought to your life.” – Tara Meyer Robson Adding emotional intelligence to your toolkit of success skills might be the most important thing you can do for your career. Emotional intelligence, or EQ, matters more than intellect alone, and it has practical value in the workplace. “Emotional intelligence is the skill of understanding and managing your emotions and also understanding the emotions of those around you,” says executive coach, consultant and speaker Irene Becker, who works with client world-wide. “High emotional intelligence is reflected in self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy and social/communication skills.” In “Working with Emotional Intelligence,” author Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., CEO of Emotional Intelligence Services, calls EQ “a different way of being smart.” Essential for leaders “Organizations are absolutely beginning to require their leaders to demonstrate these skills in order to be hired and promoted,” says Travis Bradberry, Ph.D., President, Talent Smart, Inc., which provides emotional intelligence coaching, training and assessment services. “This practice is far from reaching its peak, however, and many organizations shoot themselves in the foot by hiring and promoting people without looking at the whole picture. As a result, most are late to the game in working to develop EQ skills once leaders are on board.” Sorting out complex issues People who perceive emotions accurately (both in themselves and others) better understand difficult situations, says Bradberry. “This includes where people are coming from, why they’re doing what they’re doing, and how their own behaviour is holding them back. Emotion is a primary driver of human behaviour. When you’re blind to it, the world is a difficult and confusing place.” Build and practice EQ “Leaders today need to listen, learn and communicate across diverse groups, internal and external constituencies,” says Becker. She cites four barriers to building EQ skills: 1. Not understanding the importance of building high emotional intelligence. 2. Lack of desire or interest in building high emotional intelligence. 3. Lack of self-awareness about one’s need to build higher emotional intelligence. 4. A bias or fear because of the term emotional intelligence, and what they think is required to build this skill. “There has to be an inner desire to learn and improve,” Becker explains. “You can’t make a fire with wet wood. When some people hear the term emotional intelligence, it scares them. They think it might be like going through psychotherapy, and it’s not Emotional intelligence training is not psychotherapy. Its focus is on powerful and practical skills that anyone can use to improve their personal or professional lives.” Learn and practice EQ training can be done effectively in a group setting or with individual coaching. Exercises may begin with a self-assessment, and then cover four key emotional skills:  self-awareness  self-management  social awareness  Relationship management As individuals explore their own EQ capabilities, they can then work on specific ways to apply EQ skills in the workplace. After learning EQ skills, practice them, says Bradberry. “When you begin developing new emotional intelligence skills, you need to practice new behaviours long enough to make them habitual. The brain loves efficiency and it will only provide the neuronal plasticity needed to support new behaviour when you repeat that behaviour over and over again.” “Any situation in which you have human contact is a practice zone for EQ,” adds Becker. Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace Contributed by Rtr. Akram
  • 14. Engage and empathize “The need to use every communication to build trust, transparency of communication and engagement cannot be underestimated,” Becker says. “Emotional intelligence requires a balance of firmness and caring, authenticity and empathy. Those skills must be learned and honed.” Responding to Workplace Conflicts with EQ Workplace conflicts—covert and overt—demand high emotional intelligence skills, says executive coach Irene Becker. “Approximately 40 % of employee turnover is due to disagreements between an employee and his or her boss. When emotional intelligence and communication skills are lacking, turmoil builds. That translates into a disengaged workforce or job dissatisfaction that leads to high turnover.” “One of the most common problems is a communication style that undermines retention, creates disengagement and foments conflict,” Becker notes. “A leader who has not developed EQ skills is less able to gauge the needs, wants and expectations of those they lead”. This individual may be focused on the task at hand, and communicate in a style of manner that may be very appropriate for them, but does not engage the other party at all. If a leader is speaking to closed ears, whatever they say is irrelevant.” Becker cites the example of one of her coaching clients, a 45-year-old manager who had poor communication skills and a low level of emotional intelligence. “It became such a problem that her entire staff walked out,” Becker recounts. “She knew she wasn’t a communicator, and she finally realized that she needed to improve or she would jeopardize her whole department’s success. With some coaching, she developed a better awareness of her own and others’ emotions. She is now an excellent communicator and a more successful leader.” Therefore Emotional intelligence is essential for a leader to influence others and inspire them through the way he handles the team. Club Assembly – ZEAL II Zeal is our club assembly and it’s our ongoing project. It was held in CADD Centre on 21st of September. Chief Guest & Speaker for the day was Dr. Thirukural Dhamodaran. IPP. • 19. Rotaract around the World EM-NET Primary School Project: Rotary and Rotaract clubs are supposed to have service projects but most important is the fact that these projects are for the improvement of the communities out of which these clubs operate. The Rotaract club of Makerere University chose to donate a water tank to Em-Net Primary School in Katanga, a city slum near to the university. On 20th of September club members led by the president went to Em-Net Primary School for the first phase of the project. This was the construction of the base on which the water tank was going to sit. It was designed to get the members a more hands on approach to their project other than hiring people to do their work. The brick masonry and plastering was done entirely by club members with guidance of a builder while the rest of the installations like nailing of fascia boards and the roof gutters was to be done by the builder. The handover of the water tank took place on 27th September at 9 am at the same school presided over by PDG Nelson Kawalya in the presence of club members, Rotarians and members of other clubs. He encouraged the headmaster of the school as well as the members of the community to utilize the water tank efficiently, handle it responsibly, and teach the children proper hand washing and its importance. The project is in line with two of Rotary International’s six areas of focus i.e. DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT and MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH. We were joined by members of the Rotary clubs of Mengo and Kampala City Makerere, Rotaract Clubs of Bukoto, Kampala University, Mulago and the Provisional Rotaract club of Kampala North. The pupils of the school and the residents of Katanga near the school will receive clean water harvested from the rainfall rather than move long distances in search of the same. A Rotaract (or rotary) club without community projects is just a social club and it is these projects that bring out the best of our virtues as members of this prestigious family of Rotary. I would like to thank the President and membership of the Rotaract club of Makerere University for their wholehearted participation and support. Continue serving your communities and let us all Light Up Rotary. Makerere University Blood Donation Drive Time and again the blood shortage in our country is published in the newspapers and discussed on televisions and radios; case in point Daily Monitor of September 1st, 2014 on page 22 and 23. It is against this background that the Rotary club of Kampala City Makerere and the Rotaract Club of Makerere University decided to partner and carry out a blood donation drive on the Campus grounds. This project was initiated by the club in the rotary year 2013/2014 in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kampala City Makerere, the rotary club that fellowships on Campus. On 5th and 6th of September 2014, the Rotaract Club of Makerere University with help from the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services and Uganda Red Cross Society set up in the Freedom Square a venue for all individuals on the university grounds to donate blood to the Nakasero Blood Bank. Awareness about Rotaract club of Makerere University Rotary international District 9211
  • 20. this cause was through posters that had been pinned up earlier and these were supplemented by a public address system that was used to call out to the passers-by. A total of 89 units of blood were collected over the 2 day drive which was short of our expected haul. This was mainly due to the heavy rains that were experienced over the period. The blood donation drive is in line with two of Rotary International’s six areas of focus i.e. DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT and MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH. We also used the drive as a platform to spread awareness about rotaract and rotary in general to the university population. We were also joined by members of the Rotaract Club of Bukoto. The units of blood that were collected will be used to save a number of lives in hospitals. This is one step that will lead to a giant leap in ending the shortage of blood in our hospitals and country. Compiled by Rtr. Katalemwa Kevin Community Service Director Rotaract club of Makerere University Hello Friends..! As I began to read an article the other day, each and every line of it reminded me of those who can never read it. As I moved forward, each word pricked me from inside and I couldn’t resist myself from writing down this blog. It took me not more than one single night to realize how lucky we all are. Or maybe we never bothered of realizing it ever. All this happened because of only one opportunity that I got to record the audio-books for blind students which can help them study, or just make them feel that they are also capable enough of doing something in life. All it gave me was goose bumps, a feeling of shamefulness and a disgust for my dependence upon the last moment to prepare for the exams. Every single word I read from books is never stored as it is in my mind. I retain hardly 30-40% of what I read from my books. Rest everything what I write in the exam is what comes into my mind. I am sure many of you reading this would have been doing the same since so many years. But is the case similar to those who are not fortunate enough to read through their own eyes. Leave the text, are they all able to see the pictures around, the maps, the diagrams in our textbooks to which we don’t even want to give a look? The ease of studying at a night before an exam which we all have, the ease of copying from our friends(in case you have any doubt regarding the question), the relaxation we all have in our minds that we can do anything anytime we can just turn over the pages and say “yes! I am done with this much percentage of syllabus” ever thought how it would be for those who are still depending upon audio tapes to complete their syllabus. Most of us will answer this question in negative. We think there isn’t a reason for us to bother since the situation isn’t with us. This is where the problem lies. We are never grateful for what we have instead we keep longing for what we don’t have. Let alone blinds, ever pondered about those who can’t hear to what others say. Their life is even more challenging. Maybe for one reason that being blind cuts you only from the objects of the world but being dumb or deaf cuts you from the people in your life. VISION-A BLESSING OR AN IRREVERENT BOUNTY
  • 21. So should these people stop living? Should these people give up on their lives just because one or more of their senses does not work properly? Lucky enough these lives are who have a god gift of other outstanding senses which fills in the gap. For somebody has rightly said “Life is too short to waste time on things that you can’t have. Stop doing that and start realizing the worth of what you have. Life is also too short to stay in a situation that doesn't serve you or make you happy. Recognize what you are worth and demand nothing less than that. Leave the rest.” One of those initiatives taken by our club to attend the issue is a project titles “Audio Books Recording” in association with Cheema Trust, Chandigarh. The Talking Library for the Visually Impaired is set up to cater to the educational needs of people with visual impairment and print disability. By providing audio books we help students excel in their subject areas, meet their educational requirements, and increases their chances of better job opportunities to lead them to a path of self-sufficiency. The library membership is free of cost for students and allows them to borrow audio materials as per their requirement. This includes college curriculum, materials for competitive exams, news and so on. Each one of us is blessed to help ourselves. Realize this. Respect this. Value this. The comforts we all have in our life are definitely the results of the karmas we did in our past. And in the next janmas also all we get is the result of what we do in this life because what goes around, comes back to you. So do good to everyone who you think deserves, respect and thank god and your parents for what you have in your life today and just feel contented in each phase of your life. Just try to make somebody’s life better with what you have and bring a change in their life with every possible thing you can do for them. Yours in Rotaract, Rtr. Surbhi Manocha Club Editor Rotaract Club of Chandigarh, RID 3080 Hearline Project Rotaract Club of Chandigarh has always believed in long term goals and projects. I being a part of this club for three years now have also been a part of all these projects but one of the most amazing project that has brought as much happiness and contentment to others as it has to me is 'Heartline'. It's our signature fund-raising event where the cause is heart surgery of the kids from within the country and without. This year itself, in the past month around 7 kids were brought to India from Rawanda, Africa. I had the fortune to meet those blessed souls who came all the way without their parents with only one hope...that they will survive. Their smiles and optimism is all it took to make me go the mile and pledge my allegiance to this cause. Almost 500 such surgeries have already been successfully done within less than a decade but hopefully this is just one of the many more successful decades to come. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to bring this project in sight of the Rotaractors at the national level in general and in Rotaract club of Zenith in particular. I wish this magazine receives broad readership. Tipzzeeee Yours in Rotaract, Rtr. Manisha Bansal Vice-president Rotaract Club of Chandigarh
