bits and bytes from RCSLIIT

CONTENT
I am pleased to send this message to the final edition of the “.exe- bits and bytes from RCSLIIT”
being published by the current committee of the Rotaract Club of SLIIT. Initiatives such as
Rotaract provide opportunities for our students to address physical and social needs of our
society, while at the same time providing a means of developing their own personal skills. Soft
skills such as leadership, time management, interpersonal relationships and team work are
not taught in the class room but are vital in securing employment. In fact most employers rate
soft skills as being as important, or even more important than technical skills in securing entry
level employment. It is for this reason that SLIIT encourages and promotes students
engagement in a wide variety of activities outside the scope of main stream education.
I take great pride in the fact that the Rotaract Club of SLIIT has taken the initiative to launch
several projects which serve the community, in particular its signature program, ‘Sightaract’
which has brought hope to many needy persons. I would like to congratulate the outgoing
committee on the work they have done. Meaningful contributions of this nature will no doubt
add momentum to the “globe effort to bring peace and international understanding to the
world”.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to the lecturers-in-charge
(staff advisors) for taking time off their other duties to guide and support this group of
energetic and caring undergraduates.
Professor Lalith Gamage
CEO, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology.
I consider myself an extremely fortunate person. I have in the past few months had the great
fortune of working together with an enthusiastic, talented and amazing set of young boys and
girls. So much has happened during this period of time. It was a learning curve for all of us.
We had our share of ups and downs, but through it all, the young Rotaractors learnt so much.
Patience, tolerance, understanding, building camaraderie, team work, developing soft skills
like addressing a gathering, handling a project and completing it successfully etc.
We as advisors also had our share of learning. We had to handle situations where patience,
tact, understanding, empathy, sympathy were all rolled into one. We let them take the lead
and supported them in the background. And today we are very proud of all the successful
projects they have completed and made themselves, their club, SLIIT, and us proud. Our
congratulations to an excellent team headed by the President, Rtr. Imalsha and his board of
members. It was such a wonderful experience working with you all.
Our good wishes go out to the outgoing President and his able team. We extend a warm
welcome to the New President and the team, to be appointed shortly.
I am ever so grateful to my colleague and wonderful partner Ms. Nimalika Fernando, my co-
staff advisor. It was her unstinted co-operation and support that kept me going as well. Despite
the pressure of the academic work at SLIIT, we always managed to maintain a great spirit of
understanding and working together.
On the day the “Sightaract” project was taking place, I received a call from her all the way from
Australia, and I was so happy. In her absence for this project, Mr. Jagath Wickremaratne, ably
supported me and was there with me every step of the way. A big “Thank You” to him.
Ms. AntoinetteHettiaratchy
Senior Lecturer, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology.

The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it's possible
to achieve the dream. Tommy Hilfiger
I am undeniably delighted to compose this message to “.exe” the quarterly newsletter of the Rotaract
Club of SLIIT.
As a charter club I believe we have achieved so much for the past year given that it wasn’t a smooth
ride through out. Those achievements would not have been possible if not for the support of a number
of personalities. The CEO of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, Prof. Lalith Gamage, Deans
and other Academic Staff, specially our Lecturers-In-Charge Ms. Antoinette, and Ms. Nimalika for their
guidance and support. And the great support of the Rotary Club of Battaramulla, is sincerely
acknowledged. I should add that we were privileged to have such a parent club, they truly had our
backs at all times with the guidance, support and advice.
Also our Youth Advisor Rtn. Sri Kandasamy for his guidance and advice, DRR PP Rtr. Abdul Wahid and
our very own District Director PP Rtr.Anuja Madushan, for sharing their knowledge and experience
with us and giving us their support. Rtr.Minoli Ranasinghe for inspiring us from the very beginning. Last
but not least all my fellow members at RCSLIIT, nothing would be possible if it’s not for you guys. As a
president I couldn’t ask for a better team.
As we are slowly approaching the end of the Rotaract year 13/14, I would like to take this opportunity
to wish the upcoming office bearers all the very best for a rocking year.
Happy reading!
Happy reading!
Rtr. Imalsha Udawatte
President, Rotaract Club of SLIIT (2013/14).
It is with immense pleasure we present you the final issue of ‘.exe-bits and bytes from RCSLIIT’ for the
Rotaract Year 2013/14. When we look back at the year that has passed by, it changed each and every
one’s life enormously. We learned so much out of Rotaract, we expanded our friend bases, more
importantly we spread love and laughter among the others as much as we could.
There is no doubt that the past year was a remarkable one for the SLIIT Rotaract family as we had a
number of projects in many different avenues. We started our journey with the Charter Installation
Ceremony, followed by many successful projects. We learned that there’s nothing that we can’t
achieve together. This past year wasn’t easy, especially as we had a very limited number of people
who had experience with the Rotaract movement as Interactors. But we personally believe we did a
good job working as a team, making mistakes and learning from them.
The Past year was filled with so many new experiences and happy memories for each and every
member of RCSLIIT. The projects like Sightaract, Shining Bright, and Care to Share helped us to look at
the society in a whole new perspective, while projects like Rafiesta, Bollywood Night, Merger and Pizza
Gab enabled new friendships, and happy moments. It’s amazing what a good intention, and
commitment will bring your way regardless how little you do. We learned and gained so much from
Rotaract that we are so grateful and privileged to be a part of this whole movement.
There were a lot of people behind us throughout the year supporting, guiding and looking over us. We
make this an opportunity to sincerely thank each and every one of them. We also make this an
opportunity to wish our dearest sisters and brothers of the elected board a successful year ahead!
Viva la Rotaract!

SLIIT Cricket Bash ’14 was another successful event organized by the Rotaract Club of Sri Lanka
Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), which was held on 3rd and 4th of April 2014 at SLIIT
grounds. The event was organized to promote Rotaract among other undergraduates, to
highlight the significance of team spirit, to form the ability of facing challenges and building
inter-relationships among each other, and as to raise funds for the club.
The word about the event drew some more attention to the club as we planned. And it indeed
became the first choice of the fellow undergraduates to spend their free time. We had the
RYLA Best Entertainer title winner Rtr. Nirmal who made the event more interesting doing
the commentary making the crowd laugh.
It was a good opportunity for everyone to take a break from their busy, regular life styles and
to loosen up. What could be more refreshing than seeing your friends’ score against another
team and seeing them win, and you cheer for them throughout? NOTHING!!!
Rtr. Yasas and his team did a great job organizing the event and completing it successfully.
The event had more than 150 participation with 37 teams and around a forty member
participation. I would like to make this an opportunity to congratulate the organizing
committee on a job well done.
Project Chair: (for RCSLIIT) Rtr. Imalsha Udawatte
The Bollywood night was a joint effort of the Rotaract Club of Colombo Fort, the Rotaract Club
of Mid-City and the Rotaract Club of SLIIT which was successfully held at the 4th floor, Access
Towers, Colombo 02 on 24th May 2014 from 7pm onwards with the main objective of giving
the experience of a different culture away from its origin (Bollywood) to our fellow
Rotaractors.
The food, beverages, decorations, music were suitably selected to serve this objective along
with some fun activities. The balloon dance and paper dance sessions were so much fun. We
had around forty members participating in the event.
Two popular and very talented young celebrities – Udari Kaushalya and Sangeeth
Sathrasinghe participated as the chief guests for the event. There were more than hundred
and fifty heads on the day at the level four, Access Towers most of them were dressed in
clothes which resemble the Indian culture.
It was a night filled with fun, laughter and entertainment with Indian sweets and food.
Participants had a good time dressed in Indian costumes, getting along with each other. The
Organizing committee did a great job bringing together the event in such a way that no one
got bored throughout that time. Indian music, mehendi, singing and dancing made the night
indeed a memorable one for all participants.
Project Chair: Rtr. Nipuna Kumarage
“Insignia” is the final project in our Rotaract calendar. It is a website which has information
such as the National Flag, National Anthem and the location of more than hundred countries.
We believe that this will be a good source for anyone who is keen on expanding their
knowledge, especially for the school students.
This was a project which falls under the avenue International Understanding, with the main
objective of providing people an idea about the countries in the world. Rtr. Nipuna and his
team took the responsibility and worked so hard gathering information and finalizing the look
of the web site. The fact that they were able to finish the assigned task within a weeks’ time
makes the whole effort special and commendable.
Still we are working on hosting the site to make it available for the general public. Hopefully
the site will be up and running really very soon. You guys can try the temporary URL
(http://trialsites.ihoststudio.com/trialsite377603/website/index.html) if you can’t wait till
that. If you are lucky may be you’ll get to see what they have to offer to you! If not well, don’t
worry we will host it soon and update you with the URL.
Till then enjoy these few screenshots we have for you!
When something refuse to give up, it is said to be persistent. Here is a persistent number:
142,857
Wonder why?
Multiply this number by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Write each answer in a new line. Now can you
understand the reason to call the number as persistent?
NO???!!!
Oki let us all take a look at the products together :D
142857 x 2 = 2 8 5 7 1 4
142857 x 3 = 4 2 8 5 7 1
142857 x 4 = 5 7 1 4 2 8
142857 x 5 = 7 1 4 2 8 5
142857 x 6 = 8 5 7 1 4 2
Each has the same digits as the original number and the digits are in the same order as the original
number starting with a different digit each time.
Interesting isn’t it?
