In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

2. History
In 1998, a group of 6th graders in Northville, MI decided to act. They decided to raise money to help their teacher help the unfortunate kids where she
had lived in Afghanistan. That teacher founded Kids 4 Afghan Kids, a Michigan-based non-profit organization whose goal is to re-establish educational
facilities for boys and girls in Afghanistan and to address the desperate health conditions in which the children and their families live.
Through the hard efforts of these Michigan school children, Kids 4 Afghan Kids has accomplished its mission and so much more. In 2001, the
organization established a school where 1,200 boys and girls now attend. The group also funded the construction of a medical clinic staffed with five
doctors and nurses, an orphanage for 50 boys (90 more on a waiting list), a bakery/kitchen to provide lunches for the children, and a community well
that supplies water not only to the school and orphanage, but to the entire village. A second school has since been built for the more than 1,000 kids.
The original children that helped fundraise have continued to participate in these efforts. Some are now graduated from college and carry on with their
support. Empty bowl fundraisers, an annual hoe down dance, can deposit collections and a booth at the local Victorian Festival are all activities in which
these children participate.
Not only do the kids fundraise, they also assist in obtaining and packaging of educational materials and medical supplies. These are then transported,
sometimes with volunteer medical staff, directly to the clinic staff overseas.
Who did we serve and
What did we accomplish?
Our team, Kids for Kids, served the Kids 4 Afghan Kids non profit
by fundraising and packing medical supplies to be delivered to
the project in Afghanistan. We packed over $10,000 worth of
vital medicines and supplies which a volunteer doctor and the
directory of the non profit delivered.

3. The Kids that make it possible!
Volunteering at Northville’s
Victorian Day Festival September 14-16 2013
These kids volunteered to make and sell items at
the Victorian Day booth in downtown Northville,
Michigan. These funds are then donated to Kids 4 Afghan
Kids to supply educational, building and medical supplies.
For the festival, they sold drinks – teas and energy drinks.
They distributed samples to promote their booth.
They also made a large box to collect empty cans for
can deposits.
4. Sustained and Ongoing Relationships
Our Teams Plan:
Continue our volunteer tasks and work towards
creating new opportunities to help the
Kids 4 Afghan Kids non profit organization.
Middle school students Haley Clafton, Erica Meister and Allie
Pierce have lead K4AK's effort to raise $ 7,500 over the last several
months by giving presentations on the project and organizing
fundraising events. The girls have been volunteering to help K4AK
for four years.
“We wanted to do something to help the 1,200 students and their
families,” said Allie, “without our clinic, they had no professional
medical care.”
The relationship between these students and Kids 4 Afghan Kids
has been evolving over the last 5 years. As evidenced by other students who
have participated in the efforts to help K4AK, some of these
relationships may continue into their college years.
Hopefully impacting the careers and interests they pursue as young adults.
Examples of ongoing support:
The Northville Rotary Club presented K4AK with $1,600 in
donations. “We got money from the Club, and from individual
members. Their generosity was fantastic. These donations alone
will support the clinic for one month,” said Erica, who accepted
the checks on behalf of K4AK in June.
“Our goal now is to raise the money necessary to keep the clinic
open next year,” said Haley.
Winchester, Amerman and Silver Springs Elementary
Schools helped K4AK raise money in May by hosting
fund raising projects that netted more than $2200.
"(At Winchester, we) were excited to help K4AK.
We wrote announcements, gave presentations to each
class and sold 1,499 Smencils (scented pencils).
Every little bit helps," said Allie’s brother,
Winchester fourth grader Matt Pierce.
Amerman's Family Hoedown and Auction was a huge
success! Thank you to everyone who helped out and
participated! We earned over $8000 toward the
health clinic. Keep tuned for our Hunger Awareness
Empty Bowls fundraiser in February 2012.
“The village needed $15,000 to hire a doctor and dentist for one year,”
said Khris Nedam, Amerman third grade teacher and K4AK’s US
Director, "Because of K4AK and the support of the Northville community,
the clinic will now be open through December with a dentist, mid-wife, and medical doctor.”

Transition 1998 - 2013
At the beginning…
Now.....
Kids 4 Afghan Kids is continually striving to fund the facilities and personnel
at the project. The students and parent volunteers have made an impact
on the quality of lives of the people, especially children, in the area.
Kids 4 Afghan Kids would use the prize money to help in the upcoming
planned phase of building a library and media center for use by the school
and orphanage children. Building plans have begun and land has been acquired. Any
Prize money would be used to help stock the media equipment and library
materials.
Thank you!
