The magazine's name is onomatopoeic and refers to the sound made when playing a power chord on an electric guitar.<br />When Kerrang! started publication on 7 June 1981, it was edited as Geoff Barton and was initially used as a one time supplement in Sound newspaper which focused on the new wave of British heavy metal and other hard rock acts.
