Introduction
Active community and parent involvement in a school is not automatic. It involves energy and labor on the part of the school, its staff and establishing relationship with parents and the community. The relationship must also be sustained and continued nurture and support must be established to improve the relationships. This task is imperative for the growth and development of the school. Parents and the community should come together and by joining forces to ensure that each child receives the necessary resources, continued support and opportunity they need to be successful in their learning. A strong parent and community relationship make for a great school experience for all that is associated to the school.
In an effort to provide support and opportunities for students, they should be provided opportunities to participate in community service and internships; that will develop the skills. By being provided these opportunities, students will be able to apply these skills not only to the classroom but also their daily lives. The students will participate and be actively involved in the community and the parents will support and encourage these students in doing their best. Community and parent support is a wonderful source of inspiration for students.
Philosophy
The internship and community service projects goal is to recover and advance the community through student, parent and community contribution (Kielsmeier, 2010). The concept is to get the parents and community involved in giving students the support they need when actively involved in their projects within the community and their class assignments. The purpose is to help produce a deeper understanding of classroom learning and a chance for improvement in the community. The classroom abilities and skills attained by students will be converted into improvements within their local community.
Objectives
There are certain objectives that I will like to meet in the course of the service project. These objectives are:
1. To increase parent involvement in the community.
The majority of community projects involves the child and the parent. This means, in order for the child to participate, the parent must be actively involved; when this happens, the number of parents that participate will increase. It is imperative for school staff and teachers to acquire and maintain a good relationship with parents and school staff. Mod v learning environment
Creating a positive learning environment is important for student engagement and learning. Factors that contribute to a positive environment include consistent standards, values, expectations and ground rules. If students feel comfortable, safe and responsible for their own learning, they will be more open to participating and benefiting from lessons. When designing an online learning environment, it is important to clearly define its purpose, create a distinctive space, promote effective leadership, establish norms of conduct, and allow for subgroups and resolution of disputes. - 2. What is Project-Based Learning? Project-based learning is a type of instruction that uses hands-on learning to educate the students on specific content. Project-based learning is student centered more than teacher centered. Project- Based Learning can be beneficial for a variety of different students and helps to motivate students to participate in activities.
- 3. The purpose of this unit and final project are to help educate the students on how to be good members of a community. The students will also learn how to work well with others and collaborate on group work. This project/unit will allow students to work on an assignment that relates to the real world and will educate them on more than just basic facts and information. Benefits of this Unit
- 4. The title of the unit is “What is a Community?” Throughout this unit, project-based learning will be used to involve students with hands-on activities. The students will learn different aspects of a community and work towards the final project. The final project will consist of each student being assigned a role in the “community” (classroom). The final project will also consist of the community holding a mock election to delegate leaders. What is a Community?
- 5. Essential Question for Unit: What is a community? Unit Questions: 1.What makes the community? 2.Why is a community important? Content Questions: 1.What people, places and things make up a community? 2. What are ways we can get around our community? 3. Who leads our community? 4. What groups and businesses are in our community? Questions
- 6. Identify past and present modes of air, land, and water transportation. Identify historical events and celebrations in communities and cities throughout Alabama. Identify how occupational and recreational opportunities in Alabama and local communities are affected by the physical environment. Identify traditions of a variety of cultures in Alabama and local communities. Discuss civic responsibilities of participating members of a community and state. Identify roles and responsibilities of leaders within the community and state. Standards That Will Be Met
- 7. Students will understand specific traditions throughout different communities. Students will understand how physical environment affects recreational and occupational opportunities. Students will know past and present forms of transportation. Students will have an understanding of celebrations and events in different communities. Students will understand civic responsibilities or members of a community. Students will be able to identify roles and responsibilities of leaders. Objectives
- 8. Teacher Monitor students throughout their project-based learning and give feedback and assessments during the entire unit. Students Fully participate in all aspects of the unit and work well with classmates/community members. Students will follow directions given by the teacher and create the best possible community within the classroom.
