Exciting News In Our Class! Our upcoming unit in Ms. Salter’s class.
Our New Unit: In our new unit entitled “What Can We Do for Our Country?” we will be exploring what we can do for our country by ways of being a good citizen and educating ourselves on our country.  It will allow students to interact both inside the classroom and out in the community to complete a presentation to the class of what they feel a good citizen exemplifies.  Essential Question:   What can we do for our country? Unit Questions: What are some important events to know about the United States? What does it mean to be a good citizen of the United States? Content Questions: What is citizenship? What are some responsibilities of being a citizen? What are some things good citizens have already done in the United States?
What are our roles? Teacher’s Role:  The teacher’s role is to be responsible for giving direction for the project, assisting students during project completion, and assessing the finished project. Parent’s Role:  The parent (s) role is to provide assistance to students as needed and encourage them during the steps of the project to ensure timely completion. Student’s Role:  The student’s role is to complete the assignment in a timely manner, seek assistance if needed, and give their best effort on the project.
Why this unit? This unit will help students to gain greater concepts of what it means to be a good citizen in the United States and will allow them to access many resources to formulate their own opinion on the subject of citizenship.
State Standards for the Unit Social Studies:  Grade 7 9.  Identify individual and civic responsibilities of citizens of the United States.
Project Objectives:  Students will be able to: *Identify individual and civic responsibilities of citizens of the United States. *Conduct an interview with a member of the community and collect information. *Work within a group to complete an assignment. *Research information from different sources
Why Project-Based Learning? Project-based learning is an opportunity for students to experience hands-on learning to create a deeper connection with the classroom material.  Project-based learning will be used in our classroom to get students thinking outside of just a textbook or one person’s opinion.  It will allow for students to explore many different resources and opinions on the same subject.
