The Kashmir earthquake occurred on October 8, 2005 at 08:50 UTC in Pakistan-administered Kashmir with a magnitude of 7.6. It caused widespread destruction, killing over 73,000 people in Pakistan, 1,400 in India-administered Kashmir, and 4 in Afghanistan. The high death toll was due to most people being in homes and schools during the earthquake, as well as difficult terrain hampering relief efforts.

Elliptic Fourier Descriptors in the Study of Cyclone Cloud Intensity Patterns

Cyclone cloud intensity analysis is conducted to study the evolution of a cyclone storm mainly using two approaches, namely: wind field analysis and pattern recognition. Of the pattern recognition based approaches , the Dvorak technique has been a pioneering effort which is widely used today. However, the Dvorak technique is subjective, as it relies on human judgment and is, therefore, error prone. Efforts have been described in the literature to automate the classification process. In this paper, we describe our efforts to perform a semi-automatic computer analysis of the cyclone cloud intensity evolution pattern which compares preprocessed visible (VIS) and enhanced infra-red (EIR) satellite images with the corresponding prototype Dvorak patterns using Elliptic Fourier Descriptors (EFD) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) techniques. This novel approach is simple and intuitive and is robust to noise, and at the same time provides classification in cases where the cyclone exhibits fluctuations during its evolutionary cycle.

BEFORE INDEPENDENCE OF PAKISTAN • The pre 1947 era also saw some disasters that wrecked havoc in western India (present day Pakistan). • Many cyclones were reported, but there estimated damage is unconfirmed. • Following are those natural disasters, which have confirmed data regarding the number of deaths and damage. BALOCHISTAN EARTHQUAKE 1935 • In 1935 at Quetta, a powerful earthquake rocked the city and surrounding areas. • The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 on Richter Scale. • Due to unavailability of proper records it is said that between 30,000 and 60,000 people died from the impact. • The natural disaster ranks as the 23rd most deadly earthquake worldwide .

The word disaster is derived from Middle French désastre and that from Old Italian disastro, which in turn comes from the Ancient Greek pejorative prefix (dus -) "bad“ and (aster), "star". The root of the word disaster ("bad star" in Greek) comes from an astrological sense of a calamity blamed on the position of planets A disaster is a serious disruption occurring over a short or long period of time that causes widespread human, material, economic or environmental loss which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources. Developing countries suffer the greatest costs when a disaster hits – more than 95% of all deaths caused by hazards occur in developing countries, and losses due to natural hazards are 20 times greater (as a percentage of GDP) in developing countries than in industrialized countries

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
