We can use the language of
 geometry to describe the world
          around us.

How can we describe and represent geometry? (form)

How can geometric properties help us represent our
    understandings of the world? (connection)

What are different ways we can represent the world
         through geometry? (perspective)

Kandinsky was interested in color and shapes, even as a child.
Beginning in his earlier, more realistic paintings, Kandinsky used
color to show emotion rather than to make objects look real. As
he grew as an artist, Kandinsky became more concerned with the
power of color in describing what he was feeling. He wanted to
use color to make his viewers feel emotion, too.

Gradually, Kandinsky became more abstract. He began to paint
objects as patches of color and he used a lot of geometric shapes
instead of painting perfect details such as facial features or
individual leaves on trees.

Kandinsky thought that through the use of color and shape, we
can all become artists. WE CAN SHOW OUR EMOTIONS THROUGH
THESE COLORS AND SHAPES. WE DON’T NEED PERFECT AND
REALISTIC PICTURES.
Task 1 -- Discussion Groups

Analyze and present your thoughts on
a piece of Kandinsky art. Create a “thoughts web”

                     Guiding Questions:

•What does the art work look like?
•Describe the colors used?
•What geometric figures are evident in the art work?
•What kinds of lines are used in the art work?
•Is symmetry evident in the art work?
•Do you recognize regular and irregular 2D figures?
•Can you use any other geometric language to describe this
 art work
•How does Kandinsky show emotion in the art work? What
emotions can you detect? Why do you think so?

Discussion
How can color show emotion? What colors do you think can show
                     different emotions?

                 Emotion Possible Colors

                 Happiness

                  Sadness

                  Anger

                   Fear
Your Task
1. Use a draft sheet to show a variety of the geometric principles we
have covered in class. Refer to our work with polygons, lines,
triangles, angles, 3D objects. Use color with your shapes to convey
emotion. You can choose to focus on one emotion and represent it in
a variety of ways OR you can represent a variety of emotions.

2. Is your draft sheet OK for you? Have you used a variety of
geometric principles? Have you used color to convey emotion? Share it
with a classmate and discuss. Your classmate should SIGN the back of
your draft after your discussion.

3. Your final copy will be on a piece of A4 card.

4. Written reflection (supplied later, but will include the geometric
principles you included, the emotions you tried to convey and the way
you tried to describe the world through geometry).
