Supt. Deb Henton and high school students picked up trash along Flink Ave. in North Branch, filling the bed of a pickup truck within an hour. More students continued the cleanup along the route. STEP program students painted restrooms at Stacy Lions Park and cleaned up and painted at Doyle Field. Jordan Charbonneau spent the day cleaning up Sunrise Park, painting bleachers and pavilions, and beautifying the Richard Widmark museum. 1) The Boiling Springs High School Library held several events in April including a poetry contest with over 80 student entries and Poem in Your Pocket Day where students carried poems for a chance to win candy.
2) On Snapshot Day, the library gathered statistics showing 192 students visited independently, 6 classes with 147 students used resources, and computers were used by 190 students.
3) Student and teacher testimonials showed the library is important for research, homework, reading, and finding resources for class in a quiet space.
Villanova Day
Villanova University students visited Ziegler Elementary School for a day of community service where they read to younger students, aided teachers in classrooms, and helped pack up classrooms for winter break. The visit was a success with both college and elementary students enjoying their time together and the teachers appreciating the help with their upcoming move.

The Findlay-Hancock County Public Library has experienced several floods throughout its history that have caused damage and disruption. Major floods in 1981, 1991, 1997, and most severely in 2007 destroyed collections and required rebuilding efforts. The 2007 flood was declared a federal disaster and inundated the library's entire basement, destroying equipment and collections stored below ground and disrupting library services. Recovery required over a year of construction and coordination between library staff, contractors, insurance, and FEMA to rebuild and restore operations.

At the visit, the students received library cards, had their work displayed, and met author Neil Gaiman, asking him questions and getting autographed books and photos. It was the students' first visit to YOUMedia as part of the One Book, One Chicago program.

Tiffony Jacobs, a former student inspired by her teacher to overcome drug abuse and violence, will visit Rothesay High School this month. All 149 of her teacher Ms. G's students went on to graduate despite risks like pregnancy, drugs, and violence. Many completed college degrees. Recently, the former students got together with their families, now with spouses and children of their own, in a touching reunion. Jacobs is excited for her first trip to Canada to speak to the students of Rothesay High about her experience and the Freedom Writers foundation.

Spring 2019 Edition
- 4th and 5th grade students from Cornerstone School had the opportunity to visit the African American History Museum with the Secretary of Education before it opened to the public. They got to explore the exhibits and learn from the displays.
- Middle school students took a field trip to the National Gallery of Art where they did a photo scavenger hunt to engage more fully with the artworks, including some they had studied.
- The whole school packed 10,000 meals for children in Swaziland who lack food through a partnership with Rise Against Hunger and a local church. Students were enthusiastic about continuing to help.

The library transitioned to a flexible schedule to allow teachers to collaborate with Natalie. The library purchased graphic novels and subscribed to Pebble Go. She has a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and endorsements in TESOL, middle school, and language arts. Her student teaching experience was in a 2nd grade classroom where she developed lesson plans and implemented differentiated instruction. She also has experience teaching ESL and facilitating activities at The Field Museum.

They started a new unit on sharing the planet and completed assessments on fractions. One student spoke to the entire school staff about small actions individuals can take to help the environment.

The 5A students have been impressing their teacher with their focus and work. They wrote persuasive essays on solid waste management from different perspectives and have been practicing speeches for their summative assessment. In math, the class has been learning about fractions including equivalent, comparing, and ordering fractions. They have also been writing their own persuasive texts using language features and organization structures they have learned. Their blogs have writing samples from this work that parents are encouraged to read and comment on.
November 26
The teacher provides an update on the students' progress. Learning reviews have been completed and goal setting documents are being sent home to be reviewed by parents. In math, students have been working on fractions, representing them in different ways and looking at equivalence. Parents are expected to attend the conferences with their children to discuss the child's learning, areas for improvement, and progress towards grade-level standards. The weekly update also provided information about an upcoming swimming unit, art exhibit, sports tryouts, and changes to winter performances.

The students had a fun Halloween party with costumes, movies, crafts and games. They also participated in an ArtJam session where they created artworks. This week they started an assessment where they worked in cross-grade groups on a webquest about materials and their properties. Their math investigations continued with exploring division and different strategies for solving problems. JANUARY 21 , 2011 W E E K LY U P D A T E GRADE 5A @ CDNIS The Rights of the Child Dear Parents, Students are in full swing as they investigate our current unit, the central idea being, “Actions can support or deny access to children’s rights and equal opportunities.” Our second meeting for our Literature Circles took place yesterday as we all engage with the book “The Breadwinner.” I have continued reading aloud the story of Iqbal as well. We are making connections to our own lives, deconstructing recount texts and beginning to ask important questions that directly relate to the central idea. This week students conducted research on a variety of child heroes and are currently completing profiles of them; hopefully they will be posted on our blogs early next week. I encourage you to look at the class blog. The students have started discussing Iqbal via blog commenting. Feel free to add your own thoughts and questions. This week were fortunate enough to have a visit by a pair of authors, Sarah Holbrook and Michael Salinger. We completed our work on fractions this week (finally!!) and have now moved into decimals and percentages. Students completed a summative project of their own choosing to demonstrate their understandings of fractions. Please refer to the CDNIS website for information on Chinese New Year celebrations for next week. The entire week is a Dress Down Week ONLY if students choose to wear Chinese clothing; if not, school uniforms are expected. The CNY Flower Fair will be held on Tuesday. Please refer to the note on the school website regarding our green initiatives for ordering tokens; all ordering is encouraged to be done electronically to set a positive example for our students.
