2. KANDARIYA MAHADEV TEMPLE
• The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is the
largest and most ornate Hindu temple in
Madhya Pradesh.
• Kandariya Temple is located in the
Chhatarour district of Madhya Pradesh , it is
in the village of Khajuraho.
• The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple , one of
the best example of temples preserved from
medieval period.
• This Temple was built by the Chandela
rulers.
• Khajuraho is now an important UNESCO’s
world heritage site.

3. PLAN
• The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple , 31 metre in height and 20 metre in
width in the western complex.
• This western group of temples consist Kandariya, Matangeshwar and
Vishvanatha temples .
• The Temple is founded on a massive plinth of 4 metres.
• The temple area spread over an area of 6 square kilometres.

4. INTERIOR
• In the interior space from the
entrance there are three Mandapa
or Halls, which successively rise in
height and width.
• The sanctorum is surrounded by
interlinked passage which also have
side and front balconies.
• The temples has three main
compartments from front to rear-
1) Portico or Artha Mandapa
2) Assembly Hall or Mandapa
3) Cella or Garbha Griha

5. • Through doorway one
entrance porch extands into a
rectangular Portico (Artha
Mandapa).
• Next one is Mandapa, a
square compartments with
four pillars in the centre
connected with balcony.
• And then Vestibule or
Antarala leads to the Cella
door.
• The more developed temples
have Mahamandapa together
with passage surrounding the
cella.

6. EXTERIOR
• It is built in a steep mountain shape or
form , symbolizes Mount kailash.
• The Temple has decorated roofs, rise in
a grand form terminating in the
shikara.
• Shikara is surrounded by 84 small
spires (urushringas).
• In Kandariya Temple , there are some
650 statues.
• The building resolves vertically into the
three main parts-
1) High solid basements
2) Dark intermediate portion
3) Grouping of roofs

7. ARCHITECTURE
• The temples are the pinnacle of Hindu Art and
sculpture .
• The temple of khajuraho shows definite
individual architectural characters different
from any part of the country.
• The Carving on the entrance gate shows the
tactile quality of the stone .
• The temple architecture is an assemblage of
porches and towers.
• Shikara is unique in its design raising high from
the body of the temple.
• Urushringas are the decorative vertical offsets
bands attached to the main central body of
Shikara.
