The Information & Office Administrative Assistant (IOAA)
Program provides training in computer software applications
and business communication skills in preparation for a career in
the administrative field. The goals of the program are to support
students on their personal and professional journey, by
developing strengths and overcoming barriers for the students
to follow their chosen paths.

The Information & Office Administration Assistant (IOAA)
course is a community-based training program of the Neeginan
Institute of Technology, which is accredited through Red River
College. The program activities takes place at Ka Ni Kanichihk.

All Educational Programs are designed to create
a safe environment that provides culturally
authentic opportunities for the women to
become connected to their history, themselves,
their community and nation. Traditional
knowledge is woven throughout the content;
based on principles of belonging, generosity,
independence, and mastery as described by
Dr. Martin Brokenleg in the Circle of Courage.

• Time Frame: September 2015–July 2016
• Weekly Schedule: Monday–Friday
• Class Hours: 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
• Session Length: 1–1 ½ hours each
• Location: Large Classroom
• Class-size: 20-23 students

• Females with Aboriginal ancestry
• Age 18 years and over
• Senior 4 (Grade 12) or equivalency (GED) is recommended
through a combination of formal, informal and/or work
experience
• Successful completion of reading and Math skills test at
required competency level

11. IOAA Courses (Term 1)

Basic English Language Skills – 48 Course Hours (LANG-1325):
Basic English Language Skills begins with grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Students will be re-introduced to nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions,
conjunctions, punctuation and convention. Students will be able to identify the
basic parts and use proper English language in a business context.
Basic Business Writing Techniques – 48 Course Hours (COMM-1999):
Basic Business Writing Techniques builds on the Basic English Language Skills
course. This course guides participants through the writing process, incorporating
audience orientation, efficiency and focus, and applying techniques to achieve
clear and appropriate style in a business context.

Intro to College Studies – 45 Course Hours (ABOR-1030):
In this Computer Application for Business (CAB) job search techniques course, we
will undertake several units of study skills including a series of topics focusing on
success in school:
• Assessing and building strengths
• Time management
• Note-taking and studying
• Goal-setting and planning
• Preparing for a work placement experience
• Assembling a basic job search portfolio
13. IOAA Courses (Term 1)

Microsoft Word 2013 – 48 Course Hours (BUSA-1016):
Microsoft Office Word 2013 Introductory is a hands-on course in which students
are introduced word processing software. Students will utilize the word’s
processing program to develop business and personal documents. Students will
work with documents that include formatting and organizing text, preparing
special document formats, columns and tables. Students will add emphasis to
word processing documents by adding pictures, borders and hyperlinks.
Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 – 48 Course Hours (BUSA-1113):
This course provides extensive hands-on experience using Microsoft PowerPoint
2013. Emphasis is on developing competencies by systematically working through
the projects in the textbook and doing related assignments.

Computer Orientation – 96 Course Hours (COMP -1980):
This course covers basic computer concepts with major emphasis on the
personal computer and its practical use including hardware, application
and system software, the Internet and World Wide Web, internal Email
system. Operating system software is also include in this course.
15. IOAA Courses (Term 1 + Term 2)

Exploring Aboriginal Culture & Issues 1 & 2– 93 Course Hours (ABOR-1015):
Students will have the opportunity to explore and become aware of the Aboriginal
culture within Manitoba Regions. The course will also examine and identify the
lifestyles and issues facing Aboriginal people today. This course accommodates a
holistic approach and blending with the traditional & contemporary teachings of
the Aboriginal community.
16. IOAA Courses (Term 1 + Term 2)

Basic Business Math Concepts – 48 Course Hours (MATH-1187):
This course begins with a review of basic arithmetic and algebraic operations. This
is followed by a study of the application of ratio, proportion, and percent. The
concept of banking will also be covered.
Keyboarding – 48 Course Hours (BUSA-1104):
The keyboarding course is conducted through computer lab times, with every
participant working at their own pace using the typing.com curriculum. An
instructor will oversee time tests, and will be available for questions and support.
17. IOAA Courses (Term 2)

Office Procedures – 96 Course Hours (BUSA-1108):
Acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills to effectively work in an office
environment. This course will teach current office procedures, on-the-job
situations, production challenges and articles with varying perspectives. Some of
the topics to be covered include Human Relations, self-management with time,
resources and work, information and mail management, travel arrangements, and
professional development.
Writing Business Documents – 96 Course Hours (COMM-1100):
The Writing Business Documents course will allow students to understand, create
and use various business documents. Students will learn how to effectively write
emails, memos, letters and messages in a business context.

Microsoft Excel 2013 – 48 Course Hours (BUSA-1011):
Microsoft Office Excel 2013 is a hands-on course in which students will create,
analyze and perform calculations with complex data on a spreadsheet. Students
will learn techniques in Excel that will help manage, manipulate, and enhance data
in the form of tables and charts.
Microsoft Access 2013 – 48 Course Hours (BUSA-1013):
Become familiar with Access design objects: create tables: gain knowledge of field
types: become familiar with formatting table fields and objects in forms and
reports: create forms and reports based on tables and queries: enter and change
data directly in tables, or through forms; and know how to design an Access
database structure with related tables.
