3. There is an estimated 1.6 million-2.8 million homeless
adolescents in the United States. Out of these millions of young
people, a large percentage are transgender, gay, lesbian and
bisexual. An estimated 320,000 to 400,000 homeless LGBTQ
youth are rendered homeless each year. Many LGBTQ youth run
away from home or are asked to leave their home because of
family conflict and non-acceptance (CAP, 2010). Family rejection
and disapproval of a youth’s sexual orientation and gender
identity is a common cause of homelessness for LGBTQ youth.
Additionally, aging out of the foster care system, poverty, and
shortages of housing programs and shelters render many LGBTQ
youth with nowhere to live as well (National Network for Youth,
n.d.). These individuals are discriminated against and looking for
other options to call home.

7. PROGRESS
• Progress is maintained by monitoring. Documentation is the key for monitoring
progress. Documentation of school attendance and grades. Group Counseling
attendance within confidentiality boundaries. Individual counseling attendance
and reports of progress. Support staff reports of conduct and general living should
all be documented to be a guide to any successes or drawbacks. Giving the
attention and support is necessary for personal success.
• Program evaluation is dependent on progress reports. All successes and declines
create the evaluation to facilitate changes needed. Both staff members must stay
motivated as well as house members.
