1.Is my country mountainous or a plateaus?
In spite of being called a "plateau", it is far from flat but
contains several mountain ranges, the highest peak
being Damavand in the Alborz at 5610 m, and the
Dasht-e Loot east of Kerman in Central Iran falling
below 300 m
Geographically, Iran is located in West Asia and
borders the Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of
Oman. Its mountains have helped to shape both
the political and the economic history of the country
for several centuries.
plat‧eau1 /ˈplætəʊ $ plæˈtoʊ/ ●○○ noun
1 a large area of flat land that is higher than the land around it
The Iranian plateau is a vast part of central and
southwest Asia. It is bound by Amu Darya River
on the east, Cora River on the northwest, Sind
River on the southeast, and Euphrates on the
southwest. Pamirs and Hindu Kush mountains
on the east, the Central Asia plains, the
Caucasus mountains on the northwest, the
Zagros mountains and Mesopotamia on the
west, and the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman on
the south.
Iran, with an area of about 1.648 million
square kilometers, is just part of the
plateau.

2. What mountain ranges and beautiful mountain are found in
my country? Have they been tourist attraction?
The whole area of Iran can be divided in to four
parts: 1/2 mountains as one part, and 1/4 deserts
and 1/4 fertile plains as the other part. There are
two major ranges of mountains called the Alborz
and the Zagros.
 The Alborz have been extended all the
way from Azerbaijan to Afghanistan
passing through the southern part of the
Caspian Sea.
 The Zagros have covered a region from
Azerbaijan to the west and SE of the
country.
These two ranges function as walls blocking the
area from entering inside central Iran. In addition
to these ranges, there are mountainous regions in
central and eastern Iran.
1 Damavand 18,406 feet
2 Alam-Kuh 15,906 feet
3 Sabalan 15,784 feet
4 Zard-Kuh 14,921 feet
5 Kuh-e Hazar 14,764 feet
6 Dena 14,465 feet
7 Kuh-e Palvar 13,875 feet
8 Kuh-e Jupar 13,615 feet
9 Shir Kuh 13,287 feet
10 Taftan 12,930 feet
Tallest Mountains In Iran
They are in two Alborz and Zagros Mountain Ranges
The Mountains of North Iran
Arasbaran Mountains at the NW of Iran
are located along the banks of a border
river, Aras, with the highest peak called
“Neshan Kuh”
 Sahand Mountains are located at
the NW of Iran
 Sabalan Mountains are located at
the NW Iran
 Talesh Mountains are located at the
south of the Caspian Sea
The Mountain Ranges in Central Iran
There are many mountains in central Iran. Some
of them are connected to the Alborz mountains or
the Zagros mountains .
The central part of Iran is a very significant region
as far as minerals are concerned. There is a little
rainfall during year, sudden changes in weather,
strong winds, a few permanent rivers and flood
producing rivers in this region.
Some of them are:
 Qahrud
 Banan
 Shir kuh
The Mountains in the East
Extended from Khorasan to Sistan and
Baluchestan provinces, there stand the
Eastern Mountains of Iran that can be
categorized into three major zones:
 Jaam
 Qaen
 Makran>>>> The highest peak in this
region is called “Taftan”, a burned-out
volcano, It’s a semi desert. The countries
sharing this range are Iran and Pakistan.
Attractions of Zagros Mountain range
Attractions of Zagros Mountain Range
 Mountain climbing: especially the year round snow-capped mountains
 Eco touring the rich valleys and many waterfalls also natural parks with rare
flora and fauna.
 Bird watching especially by the lakes and lagoons which are the natural habitat
for migrating birds
 Limestone caves: magnificent caves such as Alisadr, Katale khor cave are
famous attractions.
 Salt Domes and Salt fridges that are only found in Iran and Oman have created
unique sceneries in the south of Fars toward the Persian Gulf.
 Hot water springs: Volcanic activities and faults throughout Zagros have created
many hot water springs.
Active volcanoes:
Bazman
Taftan
Damavand
Inactive volcanos:
Sahand
Sabalan
3. Are there any volcanos in my county? Are they active?
Mount Damavand
Mount Damavand
It is the highest mountain in Iran and in the Middle East and the highest volcano in
Asia. It is in the middle of Alborz Range. According to a popular legend, a three-head
dragon was chained to the mountain to stay there until the end times. The mountain is
so significant that it is printed on Iranian 10,000 Rial banknote. Mount Damavand is
also believed to have magical powers. The hot springs found on the sides of the
mountain indicate volcanic activity beneath the surface. The mountain has a wealth of
wildlife that includes wild goats and sheep, bears, and leopards. Multiple bird species
are also found on the mountain. Wildflowers such as Mountain Tulips can be found all
over Damavand.
Mount Sabalan
Mount Sabalan is an inactive volcano, also in the
Alborz mountain range. It is the third highest
mountain in Iran. The mountain has a lake at the top
which is frozen for the most of the year. Mineral
springs said to have healing properties run down the
mountain slopes. The mountain has a majestic Eagle
Statue carved out by nature. The mountain is a
famous tourist attraction in Iran. Additionally, it has
religious significance for people who practice
Zoroastrianism. These people believe that Zoroaster,
founder of Zoroastrianism, meditated on Mount
Sabalan.
Mount Sahand
Sahand is one of the highest mountains in
Iranian Azerbaijan.It s 3,707 m height. Sahand
Ski Resort is on the northern foothills of the
mountain and near the city of Tabriz.
Eastern Mountains And Attractions
These mountains are scattered to the eastern border
with different characteristics to Alborz and Zagros.
These mountains are mostly volcanic rock with barely
any vegetation with sharp steep skirts.
 Taftan Mountain: This high rising volcanic mountain.
On the height of the mountain a white cloud of an
active volcano can be seen.
 Bazman volcanic mountain: which is known as the
youngest volcano of Iran and is known as an semi-
active volcano with hot water springs on the skirts.

Azerbaijan Mountain Range And Attractions
This range being the youngest of Iranian mountains is famous for :
 Mountain climbing: Sabalan and Sahand Mountains
 Hot springs: This attraction brings in over 1 million people for medical and recreational
purposes.
 Salt domes: Close to Tabriz, Miyane, Khui and Ahar the significant salt domes can be seen.
 Caves: The famous caves of Sahulan also Kabutar
 Historic sites: The long and adventurous history of Iran can all be found in these mountains.
 Fossils: Maraghe city and the southern region of Tabriz are rich areas for fossils due to
Sahand volcanic activities. The first valuable fossils were found there in 1840.
 Scenery: Volcanic activities has created beautiful sites in the region, such as the northern
valleys of Sabalan. The many lakes, waterfalls also create beautiful scenery for nature lovers.

Jungles
Jungles in my country
More than one-tenth of Iran is forested. Mild climate, plentiful rainfall, and a long
growing season have combined to make a dense forest of high-quality timber in the
Caspian region. Moreover, more than 2,000 plant species are grown in Iran. There is an
extensive growth of temperate-zone hardwoods, including beech, oak, Siberian elm,
maple, walnut, ash, ironwood, basswood, alder, and fig. About half of the Caspian
forests consist of these trees; the remainder is low-grade scrub. The Zagros Mountains
in the west and areas in Khorasan and Fars provinces abound in oak, walnut, and
maple trees. Shiraz is renowned for its cypresses.
When we talk about Iran’s nature, we have to mention colorful
jungles in north, central areas dominated by a high plateau,
large salt flats and sand deserts or mountainous areas of Alborz
in north of Persia and Zagros along with west. We also have to
remember its unique wildlife with some of last surviving animals
and birds special to Iran like Persian tiger and Cheetah.
Nature exploration in Iran
• Golestan national park
• Shastkolateh Jungle
• Noor jungle park
Some Jungles in the North of Iran
Golestan national park
This park is located in the Eastern
Alborz mountain range. Golestan
national park has a variety of
habitats, such as temperate broad
leaf forests, grass lands, shrub
lands and rocky areas.
Shastkolateh jungle
Shastkolateh jungle is located 6 km
southwest of Gorgan. Shastkolateh river is
approximately 43 km long from the northern
slopes of the mountain of Qalbarak. This
beautiful river in its own way creates
waterfalls such as Rain Mountain and Shasta
Kalateh.
Noor jungle park
Noor jungle park is located in the city
of Noor with the annexation of
rostam-e-rood . The park with an area
3600 hectares, is the largest natural
forest park in the Middle East.
This park is located close to the cities
of Mahmoudabad, Noor, and Amol
and is used by nearby people and
travelers.
Abr (cloud) jungle is one of the oldest and most beautiful
jungles in Iran with some rare plants and animal species.
It is called Abr because in most cases it is covered by an ocean of clouds and
sometimes it seems the trees are over the clouds.
Its height above sea level, low temperature in hot season and varied forest
trees and plants are especial characteristics of this area.
Iran's wildlife is composed of several
animal species including bears, gazelles,
wild pigs, wolves, jackals, panthers,
Eurasian lynx, and foxes. Other domestic
animals include, sheep, goats, cattle,
horses, water buffalo, donkeys, and
camels. The pheasant, partridge, stork,
eagles and falcon are also native to Iran.
Wildlife in Iran
As of 2001, 20 of Iran's mammal species and 14
bird species are endangered. Some endangered
species in Iran are the Baluchistan bear, Asiatic
cheetah, Caspian seal, Persian fallow deer, Siberian
white crane, hawksbill turtle, green turtle, Oxus
cobra, Latifi's viper, dugong, Persian leopard, Caspian
Sea wolf, and dolphins. At least 74 species of Iranian
wildlife are on the red list of the International Union
for the Conservation of Nature, a sign of serious
threats against the country’s biodiversity.
More than one-tenth of Iran is forested.
The most extensive growths are found on
the mountain slopes rising from the
Caspian Sea, with stands of oak, ash,
elm, cypress, and other valuable trees.
Wild plants and shrubs spring from the
barren land in the spring and afford
pasturage, but the summer sun burns
them away.
The Persian leopard is said to be the largest of
all the subspecies of leopards in the World.
The leopard population is very sparse, due to
loss of habitat, loss of natural prey, and
population fragmentation. Apart from Bezoar
ibex, wild sheep, boar, deer (either Caspian
red deer or roe deer), and domestic animals
constitute leopards' diet in Iran.

  • 26. Jungles in my country More than one-tenth of Iran is forested. Mild climate, plentiful rainfall, and a long growing season have combined to make a dense forest of high-quality timber in the Caspian region. Moreover, more than 2,000 plant species are grown in Iran. There is an extensive growth of temperate-zone hardwoods, including beech, oak, Siberian elm, maple, walnut, ash, ironwood, basswood, alder, and fig. About half of the Caspian forests consist of these trees; the remainder is low-grade scrub. The Zagros Mountains in the west and areas in Khorasan and Fars provinces abound in oak, walnut, and maple trees. Shiraz is renowned for its cypresses.
