Executing the Maritime Strategy
“Our commitment to the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf region is unquestioned. The presence that
  we enjoy in the western Pacific is greatly facilitated by the fact that we have a forward deployed force there. And so that
                    force structure, I believe, is key to the safety, the security and the stability of Asia.”

Around the world, the Navy is executing the core capabilities of the Maritime Strategy; examples from June include:
Forward Presence
  • The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (CSG) flew 593 sorties for 3,523 hours in support of operation Enduring
      Freedom, and the George H.W. Bush CSG flew 522 sorties for 1,150.6 hours in support of operation New Dawn
      and maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
  • USS Germantown (LSD 42) and the George Washington CSG patrolled the western Pacific and prepared to
      participate in Talisman Sabre 2011.
  • Mine countermeasures ships USS Avenger (MCM 1) and USS Guardian (MCM 5) visited Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
  • The 25th Naval Construction Regiment provided command and control of 3,000 personnel in Afghanistan.
Deterrence
  • USS Maine (SSBN 741) returned home to Silverdale, Wash., following a 75-day strategic deterrent patrol.
Power Projection
  • USS Decatur (DDG 73) and USS Lake Erie (CG 70) participated in the joint training exercise Northern Edge 2011.
  • The John C. Stennis CSG completed a two-day fleet synthetic joint training exercise in San Diego.
Maritime Security
  • USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), operating under Combined Task Force 151, intercepted a suspected pirate skiff off the
      Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor in the Gulf of Aden.
  • USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and ships from the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom provided aid to the
      master of an Antiguan-flagged, German-owned motor vessel.
Humanitarian Assistance / Disaster Response
  • Military Sealift Command (MSC) hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) departed San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.
      Comfort’s medical personnel have treated more than 36,831 patients since the start of Continuing Promise 2011.
  • USS Cleveland (LPD 7) arrived in Dili, Timor-Leste, as part of Pacific Partnership 2011.
Building Maritime Partnerships
  • U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa personnel participated in Africa Partnership Station in Douala, Cameroon.
  • USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Howard (DDG 83), USS Ford (FFG 54) and USS La Jolla (SSN 701) participated in
      Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training Malaysia.
  • Navy Region Northwest personnel trained to respond to an oil spill in international shipping lanes with the U.S. and
      Canadian Coast Guard, federal and local government organizations and private industry during Salish Sea 2011.
  • USS Anzio (CG 68), USS Monterey (CG 61) and MSC’s USNS Grasp (T-ARS 51) participated in exercise Sea
      Breeze 2011 with 12 countries; while USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and MSC’s 2ND
      LT John P. Bobo (T-AK 3008) participated in Baltic Operations 2011 with 10 countries.
  • USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) participated in FRUKUS 2011 with the French, Russian and British navy.

Bush CSG flew 522 sorties for 1,150.6 hours in support of operation New Dawn and maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. • USS Germantown (LSD 42) and the George Washington CSG patrolled the western Pacific and prepared to participate in Talisman Sabre 2011. • Mine countermeasures ships USS Avenger (MCM 1) and USS Guardian (MCM 5) visited Sihanoukville, Cambodia. • The 25th Naval Construction Regiment provided command and control of 3,000 personnel in Afghanistan. Deterrence • USS Maine (SSBN 741) returned home to Silverdale, Wash., following a 75-day strategic deterrent patrol. Power Projection • USS Decatur (DDG 73) and USS Lake Erie (CG 70) participated in the joint training exercise Northern Edge 2011. • The John C. Stennis CSG completed a two-day fleet synthetic joint training exercise in San Diego. Maritime Security • USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), operating under Combined Task Force 151, intercepted a suspected pirate skiff off the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor in the Gulf of Aden. • USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and ships from the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom provided aid to the master of an Antiguan-flagged, German-owned motor vessel. Humanitarian Assistance / Disaster Response • Military Sealift Command (MSC) hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) departed San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Comfort’s medical personnel have treated more than 36,831 patients since the start of Continuing Promise 2011. • USS Cleveland (LPD 7) arrived in Dili, Timor-Leste, as part of Pacific Partnership 2011. Building Maritime Partnerships • U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa personnel participated in Africa Partnership Station in Douala, Cameroon. • USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Howard (DDG 83), USS Ford (FFG 54) and USS La Jolla (SSN 701) participated in Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training Malaysia. • Navy Region Northwest personnel trained to respond to an oil spill in international shipping lanes with the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard, federal and local government organizations and private industry during Salish Sea 2011. • USS Anzio (CG 68), USS Monterey (CG 61) and MSC’s USNS Grasp (T-ARS 51) participated in exercise Sea Breeze 2011 with 12 countries; while USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and MSC’s 2ND LT John P. Bobo (T-AK 3008) participated in Baltic Operations 2011 with 10 countries. • USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) participated in FRUKUS 2011 with the French, Russian and British navy.
